Wireless help
Hi im after some help on routers i have a wired router at the moment and have purchased a laptop is there ayway i could buy a wireless usb stick for my wired router instead of having to purchase a whole new wireless router ?

Re: WIRELESS HELP
To get wireless connection you need a wireless router which will wirelessly route the connection. What make/model router do you have? It might already have a wireless feature.
|
Re: WIRELESS HELP
You can just get a Wireless Access Point instead of a new router.

It saves buying a whole router. An example would be one of these |
Re: Wireless help
The price difference between an AP and a wireless router is the same. I would rather go for a new wireless router.

I'd rather stick with my wired network since I had wireless and my game pings went up to over 100. |

Re: Wireless help
My HP laptop has an Intel WirelessG card (same vintage as yours), so any wireless access point should be sufficient, such as the WAP54G.
Don't forget, if you get a WAP54G you will have two devices plugged in doing the job that one could do.If you want just one, then a Linksys WRT54G would do the job. |

yes i know i was asking the best wireless router for that laptop |
Re: Wireless help
well it worked out at £35 for the access point and £37 for the router so have decided to go with the router

Re: Wireless help
Your wireless router will most likely come with 4 wired ports as well (the linksys WRT54G does), so hooking up the ps2 should be a matter of simply plugging in the existing cable for the ps2. The lappy will require configuring for wireless access.

yes it does come with 4 wired ports so would this avoid me having to re register his ps2 for playing online ? also could i connect this new router via its wired connections to my current router and use the both together ? |
Re: Wireless help
never tried that but if you plug into a lan and leave the wan I think it will just use the switch
|
Re: Wireless help
i only have 1 pc and the ps2 plugged into my wired router so there is still 2 spare ports so just plugging the wireless router into the wired router would work a treat has anyone got this set up ?

Re: Wireless help
In theory it will work - you plug the new router's WAN port into one of the old routers ports. The new router gets a DHCP address from the old router and the new one then issues it's own DHCP addresses. You will probably need to change the default local address range for the new router as it will clash with the old one. ie the old one will be using 192.168.1.xxx and so will the new. In the admin page for the WRT54G you can change the local address range to 192.168.2.xxx.
It's not a great solution as you're adding unecessary overhead (Wireless traffic now has to pass through the firewall on two routers!) but it should work. |

Re: Wireless help
Whatever you do, do not get a Linksys WRT54G!!!
The signal coverage is crap on the latest versions. The V7 model is totally crap! |

ermmm thanks that is what i have just purchased what makes you say they are crap ? http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...978901-4813436 |
Re: Wireless help
They use a different chip set to the other models and are well know to have poor signal!
I had the V5 model and got signal all over my home but it developed a fault so I took it back to argos and they replaced it but only had the V7 model and I could not get any signal in my living room at all. Had three V7 units all the same so I email linksys who confirmed there are known issues with the V7 and told me to take it back for a refund so that is what I did yesterday! If you got a plasterboard house then you may be lucky otherwise do a google and see for yourself! I need to find a quality router now! Just to add the V1-V4 were supposed to be the best models of the WRT54G. V5 & V6 had less memory and came with a different firmware version. The V7 is basically a tottaly different router in the same case! |

what router would you suggest then ? ---------- Post added at 12:04 ---------- Previous post was at 11:56 ---------- what about this one http://www.ntlshop.ntlworld.com/webs...ode=SELF520302 |
Re: Wireless help
If you can get hold of one of the earlier versions of the WRT54G then grab one! (Try ebay)
However if you buy a new one then you will no doubt get a Version 7. To be honest I am looking for a new one myself and I am not sure which one to get. If anyone can point out a good wireless router that has good coverage then you will no doubt be helping us both out! :) |
Re: Wireless help
I have decided to get this one when it's back in stock:

Re: Wireless help
Looks OK to me, however I will stick with the WRT54GL and attach the high gain antennas instead of the standard ones that come attached to it!
Will let you know how it goes. |

my current wired router is a Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper |
Re: Wireless help
You have nothing to lose using a different make of wireless adaptor with that router as it doesn't have the linksys speedbooster built in. Just make sure you get one that's compatible with the latest 802.11g standard. That way you will benefit if you buy a more modern router that supports those standards.

My setup would be a Linksys WRT54GS router and a Linksys WUSB54G wireless adaptor. |
Re: Wireless help
Paul, if I were you I wouldnt go to the route of getting an AP. get a complete new router. works alot better and you dont have to have 3 units plugged into the power socket which can sometimes be a crime in finding.
my advice is get a Linksys router they are normally pretty stable and the card you got in the HP lappy is more then likely a Intel Pro wireless 2200 B/G and those are good. get a wlan router dont mess with AP's is my opinion. 1 of the main reasons is say you got AP of brand A and router of brand B then you would have to configure the AP in the same IP range of router B and that can be a bit messy. |

Re: Wireless help
Thought it might be, I had the same problem as you!
I had to clone my mac and turn everything off several times and start them all up in sequence before mine would work! The v7 is a load of crap though! |

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr can you remember your exact settings or should i just sell the thing and get a wap ? |
Re: Wireless help
I can't remember off the top of my head sorry, I know it took me loads of attempts before it worked though!
Think it was more pure luck than anything else! I took mine back to argos in the end because of the poor wireless signal around my home! I managed to get a WRT54GSv4 and it is perfect! |
