Ethernet Hard Drive

Anyone got an ethernet hard drive?

Im looking to buy one to attach to a router so that there's a common storage point for all of the machines on the network.

Im aware of LACIE's (500Gb for about £250) but was wondering if anyone has one, or another brand and wanted to share their experiences in terms of speed, reliability, noise and heat generation.

250 quid seems expensive when I could build you a 500 gig storage pc you can network for that

Zing, are you any good with busted hard drives? My 250gb external drive is reporting its corrupted. It's got lots of. erm linux distros and stuff on there and it would like to get the data off it.

if you could source an old PII it could be silent running. Its just the 500 gig for 250 quid is to high a price imo but im sure it will suit,

That would be more like it

£100 for 250Gb, i might consider this, 500Gb was only being greedy

Re: Ethernet Hard Drive

how many machines is this gonna network between? These do look like a good move in the rigth enviroment but my main machine doubles as a server across the network as its always on so its way more flexible. But for a network where there isnt a machine on all the time it is a good idea

Re: Ethernet Hard Drive

Its a home network which has

2 PC's hard wired
1 laptop wireless
1 PDA wireless

none of which are permenantly on

Im now looking at mediaplayers like these (see below) which for not much more would allow me to stream through my home cinema without putting stuff onto CD or DVD

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/104084

hmmm decisions decisions. I might try the trump card of "I want a new PC Mr Evesham, give me a media player for free and ill pay cash up front" ;)

Looking good. I've been wanting NAS for a long time, but the price put me off. £100 for 250GB might win me over...

Re: Ethernet Hard Drive

dont buy from mesh buy from Zingle ;) (spam? lol)

My idea wouldnt work as the enet adapter needs a driver to run

just noticed you can get routers with hard drives built in

Re: Ethernet Hard Drive

Depedning on the usage i would go with a PC with multiple drives, in a raid..... If its only light usage, then yes one of these ethernet hard disks will be sufficient, if its gonna be somewhere 1 PC is gonna download stuff to all the time and other PCs access then its gonna need some hard drive brains, which the ethernet devices certainly dont have.....

That reminds me of the Swiss Army knife. Lose a knife, bottle opener, cork screw, file etc etc etc. in one go... 'I need to buy a new router, as my hard drive developed some bad sectors' :erm:

I paid £110 for 2x250GB Western Digital drives off ebuyer and then stuck them in an old PIII pc I got for nothing, 500gb storage for £110. Works great too.
