New PC

Hello to all,

I've been offered a new pc by my insurance company and would like your input and thoughts. The pc is as follows,
Advent T9208
3.4GH intel D 945 processor 800hz FSB
500GB Hard drive
DVD multi format dual layer re-writer
512mb NVIDIA Geforce 7300se card
Windows media centre with TV tunner.

Now the issue I've got is that I can take this or the one below

Advent T9307
1.8GH E6300 intel core 2 duo 1GB FSB
250GB hard drive
DVD multi format dual layer re-writer
256mb NVIDIA card
Windows media centre with TV Tuner

Any opions welcome.

Thanks:confused:

Re: New PC

I'd personally go for the E6300 machine, as those chips have great overclocking possibilities and are very quick at standard clock speeds.

is it how do you work that out? you dont even know what the gfx is in the second one and id favour a c2d over the D900 series anyday.See if you can pay the extra 20 or 30 quid to upgrade the cpu to the 6400
Find out what graphics are in the second one the 7300 in the first is rubbish

What, you'd get 3.4GHz out of it?

The first machine has the better specs. Full stop.

Re: New PC

That means nothing you getting pulled in. The e6300 will overclock very easily and be able to easily out perform the D945 even at stock

It would appear so

Hey people,

Would the FSB make any differance to the performance?? Sorry if it's a silly question but I have no idea.

Cheers

im sorry but I cant believe you posted this. Surely you realise the megahertz war is over. High clock does not mean faster anymore. My conroe E6600 clocks in at 2.4 gig stock and will urinate on the P945 or any other cpu other than the higher clocked conroes

Don't get fooled by the clock speeds, the E6300 is the latest technology and can out performs older CPU's that have higher clock speeds.

Alright, boyo. ;) I don't consider myself a complete n00b, but I definitely don't have an interest in overclocking. To be honest, even with the small amount of video processing I do, it'd make little difference. :)

Thats also untrue as the C2D's multimedia is one of its strongest points

Er.. right, okay. What does the OP plan to do with his system? Probably reading his emails, listening to MP3s and MSNing his mates. Processing power probably isn't so important either way, nor graphics...

(Although graphic is something to look at for Vista, obviously.)

zing_deleted 12-10-2006 19:05

so he may as well go with the newest technology then ie the c2d ;)

http://tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html

Check out this CPU comparison chart and make your own mind up.

My money's still on the E6x00 series of CPU's.

Re: New PC

if the op can upgrade to the 6400 or oc the 6300 he will be onto a winner

Not if it only has 256MB of RAM. ;)

But adding a liitle more ram is not too expensive :tu:

Re: New PC

As a rule the E6xxx CPUs, being newer, will be better at most things, than their predecessors. As the CPU and motherboard are at the heart of any PC it makes sense to get the best possible. Certainly the future trend of computing seems to be moving towards multicore, and while regular software may not yet fully ustilse that, within the lifetime of any PC bought now, it will. Thus the E6000 over an older design CPU will provide future proofing.

However the OP also needs to consider the other aspects of the PC. How much RAM is there. 512MB is an absolute minimum, but a better spec has to be 1GB. How many slots are there on the motherboard? Could more RAM be added without discarding some of that already supplied?

Hard disk, how much space do you currently use? The bigger HD may be important now, but if not, it's relatively easy to add additional HD's later.

That leaves the graphics. If the PC is used for gaming or other graphically intensive purposes then you want a good card. Make sure the motherboard accepts PCI-e not AGP cards - the latter is also older technolgy. As graphics are relatively costly, you want to have something that could last a while. You do not want to be restricted by onboard graphics.

But it isn't easy if you've never seen the inside of a PC before. :)

where does it say it only has 256 meg of ram? it says it has a 256 meg graphics card it doesnt say what ram is in either machine ;)

Yes, I see that. And that's my point - we don't know how much RAM it has. ;)

The second one has a 256MB nVidia GFX Card

Re: New PC

The E6300 is by far the better chip to have, aint no 2 ways about it, and your more than likely to get 1gb of DDRII with that CPU.

Just google for comparisons between the D945 & the E6300 & you will come across stuff like this LINKY

If it were me I'd take #2 nuff said :)

boxboy 13-10-2006 10:40

Re: New PC

WOW, :Yikes: did'nt mean to start a war about this. As for the amount of ram each machine has it's 1GB. As for what the machine will be used for will be mainly video editing and converting, NOT MSN as stated by JRHNEWARK and some gaming for my kid's.
I think I'll go for the second Pc as it makes sense to get the newer PC with some future proofing built in.

Thank's for the info. :)

Good move in my opinion. Can you tell us what graphics is in the second machine?

Them benchmarks are are for the massively overclocked E6300 although the results are very good.Once you have the machine use everest to let us whow what ram is in there and then we can tell you how best to squeeze extra performance out of the machine.I have no doubt we will be able to get over the 2 gig on each core easily :)

This is true, but at also shows what the CPU is capable of as stock, the top 3 of all the graphs show OC chips, and the bottom 3 show stock. :)

1 Attachment(s)
Attached is a screenie of my E6600 overclocked and self tested on dual prime95 this is a 25% overclock.I have no reason to think the E6300 cpu will 2.2 on air (you may need to add a new heatsink.)but will easy reach (well as long as the cpu wasnt built monday morning or friday afternoon lol ) 2 gig + with stock cooler and a simple fsb hike.Gottas love the res on my new screen lol lol

ROFL YES I noted the fan speed and WTF

Didn't know the E6600 oc this good ! Even @ stock these are mighty good cpus...

Looking @ your screen lemmie get this straight :

You just upped the FSB from 266-> 333 with no changes to Vcore and multiplier (I asume the E6600 are multiplier locked ?)

Amazing oc.

zing_deleted 13-10-2006 14:05

Re: New PC

yeah there multiplier locked. I did raise the vcore .05 v. The cooler is very good and helps a lot lol
Ive had 3.7+ on a P4D 805 over a gig overclock theres a thread on here if you fancy a search

secret is i dropped the ram (667) to 533 the overclock to 3 gig then raises the ram back up to 667 ;) so only the cpu is overclocked (on the E6600)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh mate !

The only reason why I dont read the overclockers forums around web are simply cos they temp me to buy new hardware LOL

* damn me reading this post * .. ... . . getting tempted but I'll resist.

Nice cooler btw amazing that it cools that well or maybe the E600kdsnmckjdnkjdnscndscjkdnscjndsknc

POST scrapped I dont talk about it NO more : My Credit Card is jumpin out my wallet and luring me by doing a sexy little number called ' Use me ... use me baby '.....

This is why I don't go to computer fairs, I always end up buying stuff. Only popped in to buy a pc for my kids and ended up with a usb2 pci card for myself as well.
