I think i'm gonna be motion sick...

Yep, this is it, the Core 2 Duo E6300 celebration thread for me :D

At stock (1.86Ghz) this thing screams! It beats my 805D at 3.8Ghz doing SuperPi 1M by a whole 6 seconds!

Why didn't anyone tell me how seriously fast these chips were?
*is still awestruck*

I need faster RAM though, as this DS3 board has no downward Ram dividers...

After my experience with the 1.86Ghz version i can safely say you won't be disappointed :)

Going to run Aquamark 03 soon, i have 60,000 to beat on this setup...

On a side note, anyone interested in buying 1Gb DDR2-533 Ram ;)

OK, if this is the bragging thread, I just got a Core duo E6600, with an ATI X1950 X-TX, 2GB Ram. That's what I call really sweet :tu: although not quite sure what the bank manager will think :erm:

Looks like a cracking system, Druchii.

So, would you recommend that I upgrade the memory on this system I am thinking of ordering from Mesh? They would charge another £100 plus vat.
  • Intel® Coreâ„¢ 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor(2.40GHz,4MB Cache,1066MHz)
  • Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
  • Aluminium ATX Midi Tower + 550W PSU - Black
  • ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe PCIe Mainboard - Pentium® D/Coreâ„¢ 2 Duo - ATX
  • 2048MB DDR2 533MHz Memory - (2x 1024MB)
  • 300GB Serial ATA Hard Drive with 16MB Buffer
  • Super Format SONY 18x Dual Layer DVD Writer +R/-R/RW/RAM
  • 2x 256MB nVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT - nVIDIA SLIâ„¢ Configuration
  • 19" SONY SDM-HS95PR TFT LCD Flat Panel Display -DVI-D (8ms)

ow that's a nice system :o

As for going past 2Gb of RAM i have no idea, looks like a great system how it is :) Depends what you would use it for, and how much you use on average!

MovedGoalPosts 09-10-2006 22:10

Re: I think i'm gonna be motion sick...

@foreverwar, it largely depends on what you are buying the system to do. For example, for gaming, the GPU is often more important than the CPU. You might be more balanced withthe E6400 and the same graphics. As I understand it the memory chips, provided that motherboard suports it should be 800Mhz not 533Mhz, to avoid a bottleneck.

While running Windows XP based systems there is little to be gained with much more than 2GB RAM, especially if, as with most modern moterhboards you run that in dual channel mode, i.e. have paired memory chips of the same size, either 2 or 4 chips in total. Above around 3GB RAM Windows XP doesn't really take advantage, and most current programs, except some specialist stuff, wouldn't use it properly either. Windows 64, Server 2003, or Vista will be a different story on larger memory capacity.

I'm disheartened with my Aquamark 03 score... 50,000... Somethings not quite right. The CPU did score 10,053 though :p Which is great :D Hit around 180fps at peak :D

As for RAM speed, i know what you mean, my bottleneck is my RAM :( Need some DDR2-800 :D

<my bad>
by upgrading the memory, I meant to 900mhz RAM, not to 4gb (sorry).

I have had a PC from Mesh before (the current one), an Athlon 1800+ that I have had for nearly 5 years now, and it is starting to creak.

It is mainly for games, with surfing and occasionally watching DVD's (rather watch them on big-screen).

I will look at overclockers, thanks.

Thanks for all the comments, guys.

Sweet. Waiting for AMD to bring out a new dual core jobbo. Then no doubt whole system will need upgrading as i won't be able to use the 6600 any more (it's AGP) and quite how i'm going to manage the 3xPCI cards (TV, wireless, and sound) I dunno. :D

As for motion sick... well i've never been motion sick not even on ships/planes or theme parks etc etc. in fact i've not been sick since i was about 11 :D

oh what a shame ;)

But the mobos sata controller is native isnt it? It was on the DS4 so bios just treats them as such(they are seen as standard ide)? so your saying linux cant even cope with that? The rom drive I can understand as these intel chipsets dont support the ide contoller properly. If it wasnt for the conroe being such a nice cpu id still totally hate Intel. Roll on AMD quad core and a nice nforce or ATI chipset

no dude not at all. But you were excited when you started this thread and now your not so pleased cuz linux dont work. Like you said people makes things that work with windows you have a powerful pc better than one you have ever owned so go back to being pleased with it cuz messing with linux (or dual booting which I cant do with xp64 due to problems) does not really matter.Play a good windows compliant fps or something and enjoy it

Thinking about it, this is by far the most powerful PC i've ever had, and thinking about it, i earnt every last penny's worth to build it... That gives me a nice feeling inside once more :D

Nice one mate I was eye'in these chips up as soon as the benchmarks came out many moons back.

Mind you the E6600 was the best bang for buck when I was looking - correct me if I'm wrong I cant be arsed to g00gle for it now.

Lovely lovely chips leaving us old skool AMDers gob smacked. I'll prolly go for the upgrade next year we'll see what chipset quad core has a dependency on.

For the time being my Athlon XP-M is doing me fine thank gawd I didn't upgrade to the 64s did a lot of reading up and found the performance gain was just not good enough and hence no point for me.

The duos are in a new league altogether though so good on you.

My FX-55 is beginning to become a bottleneck for my 3D rendering. Sometimes it takes the mickey with how long it takes to render such a simple model (simple to me, but probably complicated to others :p: ). Hopefully I'll be getting an FX-60 within a month so then this FX-55 can go into my server.

Ah, but if it's an upgrade to an existing system, then he's stuck with the socket type for the CPU, unless he changes motherboard too, adding to the cost.

Very good link, i must try some more up to date distributions then... Somethings not quite right with he ones i've been trying (mind you, Ubuntu 5 isn't exactly the newest)

Just been playing with this RAM and CPU, i'm upto 2.05Ghz, which, has knocked another 2 seconds off the SuperPi time. Although the RAM is reading back at 3-5-5-15... Which is obviously wrong.

Can you try a couple of things:

2. If that reports ok, type livecd debug at the boot prompt & post the errors

Doing mediacheck flashes something on screen too fast to read then proceeds to try and boot the LiveCD, so i pre4sume it;s ok as it's trying to boot it. It fails at "Probing SCSI"

Where do i type livecd debug ?

Cobbydaler 10-10-2006 18:45

Re: I think i'm gonna be motion sick...

You need to type livecd debug at the boot prompt, enter, then immediately hit the esc key to get verbose mode.

Could you first try mediacheck again & hit esc for verbose mode, this should give a message that the check is OK or not...

Re: I think i'm gonna be motion sick...

Never used this distro why not try downloading a different distro like knoppix and others that seem to be popular with the newbs - think ubunti is another popular one that I have seen ppl rave about.

At the end of the day the kernel is gonna be virtually the same for most of them the distro is what bast***adizes the b000tiful linux kernel.

Cobby is on the right path seems like sysinit has got its knickers in a twist -

Have you got 2 cdroms ?

When it drops u into single user mode find where the cdrom drive is :
fdisk -l /dev/hda
fdisk -l /dev/hdb
fdisk -l /dev/hdc
fdisk -l /dev/hdd
fdisk -l /dev/sda
fdisk -l /dev/sdb
fdisk -l /dev/sdc
fdisk -l /dev/sdd

etc etc

Dunno much about this distro but do try knoppix, I gave it a whirl one to boot a dead machine I aint installed a distro for like 5 years I'm still running 2.4 baby ;) When systems are this solid who needs to upgrade ?

One thing the p***sed me off about 2.4 was that due to the clock count it cant only count upto 450odd days so once your machine has been up for over that period : /proc/uptime resets to zero.

This sux especially if you're running for the best uptime stats :Yikes: Newer kernels rectify this by counting in bigger bits

Here's an install that I made in 1999 I haven't changed it other than rebuilding the kernel 3 years back....
root gw:~> uname -a
Linux gw.xxxx.net 2.4.20 #1 Fri Feb 14 00:18:13 GMT 2003 i686 unknown

Here's my router again haven't needed to change that either :
root myhome:~> uname -a
Linux myhome.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com 2.4.21 #2 Mon Aug 23 12:37:44 BST 2004 i686 unknown

Of course, if anyone has a Core2 Duo going spare... ;)

How would i know that? I honestly doubt anything above 3.2 is going to be possible, but the temps aren't bad at all. Problem would be the dividers on the RAM, Currently running the XMS2 @ 838mhz or something at 5-5-5-18 (as the box says)

Full load on both cores barely goes upto 45'C, idles at between 29 - 31'C on an Arctic Cooling Freezer PRo 7, with Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste :)

In which case "will it go much higher" would have been a better question. 2.93Ghz to 3.8Ghz is a bit of a massive hike :erm:

I believe it's the highest an E6400 has gone. Although mine is an E6300.

I do believe shes got some more left in her yet :) The RAM is going to limit me though, i know it... And it's not exactly slow RAM.

1 FSB off 3Ghz now :)

Link, she's standing up to the beating, hitting 45'C full load still...

Also, just bought a laser mouse, Logitech RX1000, not used to the responsiveness! Crazy...
