Re: best wireless router for NTL

not that expensive, so i am on NTL so how does it work would i still have to use the ntl250 modem? how can i tell the difference between a normal phone line broadband router and one for cable?

DocDutch 30-09-2006 10:33

Re: best wireless router for NTL

this router you just plug into your NTL 250.

my advice is switch off the 250 then plug in the router, boot up the modem and bobs your uncle you'll be up and running.

Re: best wireless router for NTL

DocDutch, that's an ADSL Router, no way will that work with NTL, ever.

However, the most reccomended router here is the Linksys WRT54G, which WILL work with NTL, and is as easy as plugging the cable modem (via ethernet) into the port labelled "Internet" at the back. Here is a link to the WRT54g - http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=2CM7

Re: best wireless router for NTL

oops....soz Machead my mistake thanx Druchii.

should've known as its WAG. Wireless ADSL Gateway
Well Machead, if the unit is WRT which stands for Wireless Router (dont know what the T stands for)

but that will work with NTL Machead. for sure.

I'm using one right now, that's one main reason i know ;)

Plus, in the desctiption it reads "Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection."

I'll guarantee it works with NTL, as it does with Telewest.

My preferred option is to use an "ordinary" (non-wireless router) together with a wireless access point (WAP). I hide the router in an upstairs cupboard next to the cable modem, and position the WAP downstairs where laptop users get the best signal strength.

Don't you still have to run a cable downstairs to link the wired router to the WAP?

Yep, my guess is he wants it simply to be able to move around downstairs solely for the lappies and as such doesn't mind that.

Yes and no. I do have a cable running downstairs leading to the WAP, but I could use my "ethernet over mains electricity" device (http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline.htm).

Hi
Not sure weather to start a new post or jump on this one but here goes.

Netgear RP614v2 seems to be dying(poss.heat related) on me ,have to reset every day.

Looking for a new Router (4mb ntl cable modem broadband)

Linksys WRT54GS - Recommended here:

1.Why are people concerned with serial nmbers of these units?
2.Can I turn Wireless off as I only want Wired connection for now?

3.Any thoughts on D-Links DGL-4300 as an alternative.

Thanks for any input in advance.

Re: best wireless router for NTL

1. Everyone seems to want the older models on these routers to put 3rd party firmware on them. However, this can be done on the newer versions too now, so it really does not matter any more.

2. You can indeed turn wireless off.

Because the firmware, and hence perhaps the settings, are different from one version to the next...

Thanks.
Is there any need for my simple 3 pc home network for 3rd party s/w,are there problems with the original s/w that you know of?

Cobbydaler 01-10-2006 21:26

Re: best wireless router for NTL

Not that I know of, original firmware should be fine according to all Linksys fans here...

No, there are no problems with it, it's just added features that certain firmware can give. However for normal users there's no need for it.

Re: best wireless router for NTL

Hi,

A little off topic - but might be worth a warning...

I have tried 3 different wireless routers (USR, Sony LocationFree and some odd brand from Maplin) and I find that I get half the speed (4mbps) via wireless compared to 8mbps using a direct connection to the cable modem (on my 10mbps connection).

From this thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ighlight=speed it seems that it is to be expected.

Strangely, on my old adsl 2mbps connection, I get pretty much 2mbps over the wireless connection (netgear router).

I am thinking that I need to use the power-over-ethernet in order to be able to use the higher speeds...

Thanks,
Chris

Always managed a solid 4mb connection over wireless, i can even stream DVD's at 3mbytes a second over wireless (equivalent of 24mb broadband). Linksys WRT54G v5.1 router.

Re: best wireless router for NTL

Personally I would stay away from the Linksys WRT54G as the latest one is a version 7. Totally different bit of kit although it looks the same!

Has very poor signal strength!

If you can get any other than the version 7 then go for it but you will prob regret it if you end up with a v7 model! :(

whats the best (wap) wireless access point to go with a linksys wired router and ntl ?

Re: best wireless router for NTL

Not overly in keeping with how the thread is progressing .. but this is a good read for anyone considering buying a router for use with ntl.

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...ear-dg834g.asp

near the bottom of the page there is a section called Performance, Enjoy :)

( ok so it may be for adsl routers, but it gives some ideas )

I've been running the DGL-4300 on my 20Mb cable for ages now. I can max out my connection with no problems and it's been solid as a rock. It's rarely powered off or rebooted and just keeps working.
I've tried my gaming PC directly connected to the cable modem and through the router and it doesn't seem to add any overhead to pings.
I'm a very happy camper.

I'd like to setup a wireless connection in my house but am a bit confused by alot of the answers given here. I have an NTL 250 cable modem, which wireless routers are compatible with it?

Axegrinder 15-01-2009 23:12

Re: best wireless router for NTL

Well like i said in the above post the Linksys WRT54G will do fine, or the Netgear WGR614, which is provided free if you are on the 10 or 20mb service. Many others to choose from aswell,

And LOL at the exact 1 year bump :p:
