STB changing channels on its own

Three times this week the dammed piece of rubbish commonly known as the Pace STB which ntl palms off as a working wonderous peace of technology has changed channel on its own and on all three occasions I was trying to record the athletics. I duely telephoned to say there weas a problem but ntl threatened to charge me for the fault saying it was my VCR which was to blame. I then told them that if they did I would immediately cancel. They then said they would check and call me back but this is ntl and got no call back.

This happened again today at 4.13pm, to be precise. The box changed fronm BBc1 to the Front Row preview channel completely at random (chanign to the FR channel has happened on all occasions except for Wednesday when it changed to Paramount 2).

What should I do becuase ntl seems to think that it is either my VCR which is causing it to change channel or the low energy lightblub which apparently changes frwquency as it warms up but the STB changed channel at times when the light was switched off.

I am paying £1.50 oper day or £45.50 per week and obviously this isn;t going to happen but ntl seems unwilling to assist me with the problem which is of their making.

Any help/thoughts appreciated.

Have you checked the batteries in the remote control to see if it might be that? Drained or nearly dead batteries can play havoc sometimes.

Not thought of that. Have not changed the batteries since the ntl was installed 18 months ago.

Might be a cheap and easy fix to the problem, will also help rule out the remote control if you remove the batteries completely at some point and the STB carries on misbehaving.
18 months? Good going that :)

Meanwhile, if you want to record something, I suggest setting a reminder so it'll change to the correct channel just before your recording starts.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Thank you for that info spiderplant. I assume other people's STB's also change channels at random?

Yes, the reminder thing would seem sensible but when I have tried to sue it in the past all I taped was a blank screen or the screen went blank shortly after the programme started.

Thankfully, I have a DTT box from the days of On Digital and that box works just fine and I will use that from now on as clearly the ntl boxes can't be trusted and I resent paying £1.50 per DAY for a box which doesn't work properly.

Have spoken to a very helpful faults technician this morning who said that the signal strength isn't right which is why it keeps changing to the Front Row channel. An engineer will be dispatched on Wednesday.

On the contrary, this IS something the remote will do if the batteries are nearly dead.

I haven't experienced it myself, but I have seen reports of NTL remotes doing all sorts of random stuff (including change channels) when the batteries are dying.

@Rillington: If you have changed the batteries and it is still happening, I suggest you phone NTL for a replacement remote.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

My STB changes channel to front row on it's own as well - It did it on Saturday during a recording of the BTCC :(

It also constantly fires up the interactive stuff on it's own which is a right PITA. The remote is in a cupboard as I have a TiVo. I know it's not the TiVo as I've covered up the display/remote receiver on the Pace and it still does it!

Channels are going blank as well more often these days. A reboot restores things to normal for a time, but it really is starting to annoy me.

Seriously considering upgrading to a Samsung in the hope of getting rid of these problems (as well as getting the 2 Meg BB I'm paying for) but don't want to be left with more problems :(

Cheers

same things happening to me...a few times lately, and the remote was the other side of the room and sudenly front row is on...pain in the ass, and as said previous, more and more now when changing channels, numerous don't appear(black screen), TV Guide, not working(i was told 18 months ago that there was an issue and that they were looking at it).....then to cap itoff today, come home from work turn pc on..nothing...half of the lights on the modem not working - ring service status - nothing....rebooted STB...nothing, rebooted an hour later....nothing eventuall, 3hrs later i reboot and it comes back on eventually, after flashing light on STB/Modem randomly flashing for about 3 mins....getting seriously ****ed off with NTL, and am considering more and more now to change to sky/another BB/BT, to get away from this very poor service :(

Re: STB changing channels on its own

If the remote has dying batteries it can cause this, if the remote is damaged it can cause this, remove the batterys from the remote control if with new batterys it still happens and see if it carries on.

Other causes:

DECT Cordless Phone base stations too close to STB
Energy Saving Light Bulbs
Plasma screen TV's can cause this, try seating the STB further back in the stand.

My STB keeps changin channels to the front row channel (channel 7) Has been doing this since the "updates to front row" last sunday. Did it 3 times on that day!

Aye, and another faults person told you it was your VCR. Frankly I'd believe the wise words of an NTL tech before swallowing any CS BS.

What I don't understand is why CSRs are not briefed on these known issues, so they can advise customers accurately rather than just making something up.

You may find this hard to believe BUT low energy lightbulbs and plasma screens WILL affect the PACE STB, it will cause it to go to either channel or to the interactive page all on its own accord.

Nedkelly 16-08-2005 22:42

Re: STB changing channels on its own

As Spiderplant man has pointed out it is a software problem. But as 9083 has said low energy lightbulbs do affect the stbs .we had a case in a old peoples home where the council changed al the bulbs in the flats for energy saving ones.We then had loads of faults of stbs changing channels on there own at night when the lights were on

Is this the same problem I get, most frequently (but not exclusively) when switching to E4. The picture and sound will freeze for a few minutes, then it starts showing the front row movies for free. The stb (samsung) still shows the correct number for E4. Setting a reminder will obvoiusly not help and this is nothing to do with faulty remotes or low-energy light bulbs.

If so when will it be fixed?

Re: STB changing channels on its own

So you are getting this while changing channel, rather than it doing it when left alone (usually overnight)? And it isn't going to channel 7? Then I suspect that's something else, but I don't know what. When did it start happening? Whereabouts are you?

Rillington 20-08-2005 01:39

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Mine, with one exception, has gone to channel 7. It started happening just under a fortnight ago. And, with one exception, it has happened overnight.

Another engineer is coming out on Monday teatime.

Interesting that it is happening for you, geek, with a Samgsung box though.

Tristan 20-08-2005 02:20

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Out of curiousity, do you usually tune to a particular channel before you go to bed?

IIRC, the software is set to switch to channel 7 if it loses the feed for the channel it's on -- as would probably happen if a channel closed down for the night.

Sam B 20-08-2005 14:18

Re: STB changing channels on its own

If you're on the Bromley platform, and your STB has started changing from it's current channel to channel 7 after about 7th August, then this is almost certainly the software issue that spiderplant referred to. We are aware of it and are creating a fix. Please bear with us a little longer.

If your box has been doing it for longer than that, then it's for other reasons. Channel 7 is the default channel, if as said above channels close down etc.

Sam

Rillington 22-08-2005 11:46

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Yes, it was around 7 August that the box started changing mostly to Front Row preview channel. It has happened every night for the last four nights on top of the half dozen other times in the last fortnight. On all but two occasdions it went to Front Row preview. The other times were to Paramount Comedy 2 and whatever comes after 145. The box is left on whatever channel I had just been watching and that obviously varies.

If it is a software issue then how much longer is it going on for becuase I resent payign £45.50 per month for asomething which, apart from all the other gripes I have over missing channels etc, doesn't actually work.

The trouble right now is this. What do I do when I wish to record a programme? This box keeps changing channels on its own, regardless of the reason, so how can I guarantee that the box will record the channel it has been left on becuase, unlike my Freeview box, ntl has chosen not to provide a function whereby you can tell the box to change to a specific channel at specific times.

Chris_1013 22-08-2005 11:51

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Even hoping your box will stay on the same channel doesn't guarantee anything. I have a TiVo so it does switch to the channel I want to record something on but a lot of the time the channel will change mind program. Bloody pain in the arse. Thank E4 for Second Chance Sunday is all I can say. Cheers for this software "upgrade" NTL!

Chase 22-08-2005 16:43

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Chris is this on a Pace box or Samsung? I'm a TiVo owner as well, and am getting a Samsung installed in a couple of weeks.

Chris_1013 22-08-2005 19:20

Re: STB changing channels on its own

This is on a Samsung box. I had wondered if it was my TiVo doing something funny, but it happened on our Pace box downstairs the other day.
It's like Sam B said... been happening since 7th August (roughly), so it's that software bug. I assume it's the same software on both the Samsung and Pace boxes.

:O

It's only happened to me a couple of times. Not sure if it's happened over-night or not as TiVo records suggestions while I'm in the land of nod.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

The box I have has now gone to Front Row on the last five nights - not checked today however. This has been happening for almost three weeks now.

Was reading through another thread devoted to this very same subject and the person who started it was also based in Leeds.

I have to say I am getting sick and tired of this and if it continues I WILL get rid of ntl as I'm not prepared to pay £45.50 for a STB which doesn't work and randomly changes channels on its own.

It would be really helpful if you could all post the following in this thread when you report this:
- Your Box Make and type if you know it.
- Time that it happened, and what channel you were on at the time.
- How often it's happened to you recently.
- Where you live, or just Bromley or Langley if you know it.

Basically as much detail as you can. I know that this is being looked at by a lot of people right now, but this will help them when they're looking at it.

I don't know how they're getting on looking at this either. I'll try and find out tomorrow.

Thanks

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Mine's doing it as well :(

Pace 2000, it was on Channel 4 and kept changing to 7 the ntl thingy, did it several times between 10pm and 11pm, only happened since I changed packages.

Southampton, Bromley platform.

So here's some questions.

Why is a poster above getting an engineer out if this is a known national issue? No wonder the company has money problems wasting it like this no-one ever talks to each other.

Why wasn't the software tested properly? Would have thought a fairly impressive bug like forgetting which channel it's on would have been noticeable?

At some point perhaps the CoCo side and Cabletel sides of the company might actually merge properly and DTV, telco and internet actually communicate, perish the thought.

Got a pace box and I'm in the Portsmouth area and for the last two nights I've had this extremely irritating problem.Only in the evening, not during the day..during the day the time is out by an hour or so on the next/now box.

Rillington 25-08-2005 01:07

Re: STB changing channels on its own

The ntl engineer was supposed to turn up today but chose not to. They have been coming out because the faults dept seems to have no idea bout this situation. I tell of many issuesd which ahev been discussed but they seem totally ignorant as to this issue and they say they will get the fault sorted by continuing to keep visiting me (or not visiting me) which is clearly starting to seriously mess me about.

Right now, I have the following:
Box: Pace, don't know how to find out the model number

Times: usually overnight but occasionally at random during the day. It usually goes to Front Row channel 7 but on occasion to other channels. Has been left on different channels - BBC1, CNBC, E4, sometimes switched on sometimes switched off.

How often: At least a dozen times since 7 August

Where I live: Leeds (ex CWC - Bromley I think)

Any information appreciated Sam.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Well I had the same problems again tonight, also in the Leeds area. Wasn't as bad as yesterday, only turned itself over once or twice. I have an engineer coming out between 12.00 and 4.00 tomorrow. If this is a known problem would I be best cancelling the engineer in the morning rather than wasting their time?

Rillington 25-08-2005 01:34

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Well I have had MY time wasted this last week twice and the engineer today just didn't bother to turn up. I said after I had waited four hours that I was not prepared to sit around another four hours on the off chance.

Can't comment if it has changed channel on its own today. It didn't last night but earlier when changing channel it went to a random channel and the box then froze.

I think people are really getting peeved off with this now. I sure am.

bogboy1978 25-08-2005 01:45

Re: STB changing channels on its own

What's likely to happen if I don't cancel the engineer? Are we just talking about a quick box swap here? So far everytime an engineer has come out to our house I have been given a new box and told that will do it. If that's what I am likely to be facing tomorrow then I may as well cancel them just to save my time as well as theirs.

Chase 25-08-2005 09:44

Re: STB changing channels on its own

If we have issues with software at work at it's been changed, we have to back out the latest changes. If this problem has been caused by some software changes, why can't the latest software drop be backed out?

Begize 25-08-2005 12:45

Re: STB changing channels on its own

I'm in Stockport, ex CWC, Bromley I think with a Pace 1000 box that's years old (still has Cable and Wireless on the front).

Noticed the channel 7 thing happening over night for the last few weeks but not really thought anything of it. Suddenly at about 9:30pm yesterday the box went balistic, changing channel on it's own (sometimes to front row, sometimes to other random channels), freezing, sticking with the now and next box on screen and just generally acting as if the remote either had a fault, duff batteries or a key stuck down. Not sure what channel I was on at the time.

Something similar happened but to a lesser extent one night last week so I changed the batteries even though they were only a few months old. That seemed to sort it.

Last night I took the batteries out of the remote and the box continued to do it, particularly if you used the front panel buttons to do something.

Rebooted it several times and it kept on doing it.

This morning it appeared to be fine.

Not sure if this is connected but the time has also been out in the now and next box everyday this week and a reboot doesn't seem to fix it, on Sunday it was hours out and refused to sort itself out.

I'm going to log it with customer services as I have had problems in the past with signal strength (I am the first house on the street so I have an attenuator or the box refuses to pick up certain channels).

Begize 25-08-2005 13:35

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Update:

There is a message on the faults line saying they know about the channel 7 thing and that they are working on it.

I spoke to one of the (very helpful and cheerful) ladies who also said that plasma screen tv's, low energy lightbulbs and fish tank pumps can also make channels change on there own.

As I have none of those, an engineer is coming on Saturday afternoon....

Rillington 25-08-2005 17:09

Re: STB changing channels on its own

The enigeer who visited me today said it was definately a fault with the box and has changed the box. Third box in 10 days!

Re: STB changing channels on its own

I've just found a bit more information.

This problem has been worse over the last couple of days, caused by another change that has now been backed out. So, this problem does still exist, but shouldn't be nearly as prevalent as it has been.

I would still appreciate your posting when it happens. It's just on Bromley, so your location, channel you were on and time it happened are the most important.

Please also be assured that there a lot of people working on this right now. I will keep you updated on this thread.

Thanks

Hi Sam,

I've got a Pace 2000 box on the Bromley platform. Every night for over a week now the box after 10pm for a couple of hours changes to channel 7 (front row) doesn't matter which channel I'm watching, last night it was channel 4 (Lost) not impressed.

Faults just told me they were sorting it, so I don't know if there is any more info available (as to why this is happening)

I've got a an old C&W Pace box (Manchester area) and had the Ch7 problem a couple of times. Also had the Now / Next being out of date and long delays in the box responding to channel changes etc. I press Channel Down and nothing happens so I do it again and again and still nothing. Then half a min later it jumps down3 or 4 channels.
On top of all that I'm getting terrible lip-sync problems - seems to get worse after the TV has been on an hour or 2. Or is this a fault with my TV ????

Happened to me last night, first time I have noticed it, but recently i havnt been watchin much evening TV.
It happened while i was watchin the 10pm BBC News, it just turned over to the Frontrow channel.
Other problems I've had are that last Sunday i had the problem with the EPG showing information that was 2 or 3 hours behind. Also when i change channel sometimes it hangs for about 10-15 seconds before it actually changes over.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Hi gregorious, and :welcome:

It sounds like you might have a signal or STB problem, which is seperate to this known issue. You can still catch broadband technical support - they're open until midnight on 0845 650 0125 if you get your broadband service through your STB. :)

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Our Pace Di 4000 also changes channel to channel 7.

This happens normally during daylight hours when our low energy bulbs are not on, the batteries in the remote are fresh. It can be quite annoying watching the cricket on 4 and then wham its channel 7!

:Yikes:

I can not be bothered reading all this thread so I have had a very quick flick thru (sorry if this has been told already) there is a "software" bug out at the mo and ntl are working on it.....you will know if you have this fault if:
Your box changes to channel 7 or
your remote takes time to change the channel/does not respond or
your fav list has been messed up

Does anybody what is causing the problem?

Same here, also have anything upto 10 channels disappear then reappear again later

Normally Total Channels reads 296 which is correct

When channels disappear, it can be anything from 286 to 294 channels total, instead of 296

BTW, I have Samsung 2100C STB on Bromley v3.1 (Gosport, Hampshire)

Quote from the instruction leaflet for the remote:

"You may sometimes notice that your set-top box does not respond when you press keys on the remote. This happens when your set-top box is busy updating its TV programme listings. Your remote control is not faulty. Wait a few moments, and then try again."

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Well, sent an e-mail to NTL, concerning the issues i was having on Friday and go a call today, and they are sending an engineer out on Tuesday...

The CS guy didn't seem to know much about it, as when he asked what the problem were i told him that it had changed channels 3 times on Saturday he just said "Oh, thats not good, i will arrange for an engineer...

The best bit..."Will you be in "FIRST thing in the morning"
Me -" what time do you call early???"
Them- " Between 8 & 12"
Me - "No, i am working"
Them - " okay, between 1600 & 2000"
Me -" sounds better"

How can 12 noon be first thing in th emorning???

Will let you know what is said/done as so far today(touch wood), nothing has gone wrong

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Sadly i don't think an engineer visit will make any difference to this...

From the number of people affected it sounds like a major problem- either a software issue or network problem, nothing that can be helped with an engineer visit unfortunately.

However, I am prepared to be proved wrong...

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Happed to me tonight for the first time, well the first time I have noticed. Out of the house all day so I programmed the TIVO to record Super Sunday on SS1 and the The Last Word straight after on the same channel. Super Sunday recorded fine but when I went to watch The Last Word just now, the recording lasts for 10 seconds before the NTL box changes to SS2!!!!! Now I know this was the NTL box because there was no TIVO channel banner on screen when the channel changed. Just the NTL guide which then refused to disappear. :(

Well, had an engineer call round today, and he has changed the box, to a "BRAND NEW" samsung box(very posh), and at first he said that they were working on the issue(i haven't had any problems for 2 days(touch wood)), but he then checked the config and found a few issues, so he changed the box...i am now just waiting for mt subscribed channels to reappear - he said 10 mins, its now been 30....lol

Went away for the weekend, but touch wood, it's not happened since I got back.

Getting the Pace swapped out for a Sammy box tomorrow though.

everything a-ok at the moment, does seem a lost faster with the samsung box...maybe...just maybe, they might keep my business for now

Re: STB changing channels on its own

I not convinced it's "fixed". Happened to me last night - I was actually watching and caught it rather than recording.

Samsung Box
E4
18:29

changed channel up and down and then it was OK for the rest of the night (I assume).

Re: STB changing channels on its own

My box seemed to go to Sky One at some point over the weekend. This would be the first time in almost a week. not checked it this morning.

Does anybody know when they are going to sort this out?

Rillington 31-08-2005 12:45

Re: STB changing channels on its own

No, it;s still doing it. Channel 7 this morning.

What on earth is ntl's problem? Three and a half weeks and still they seem unable or unwilling to sort this out. Are they trying to loose customers or what becuase if this continues and I don't get to record something this coming Monday then ntl will be a goner from my flat, even if that means going back to freeview. I've had enough of this and so have many others.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Mine is still picking random channels although not as often. Last night it suddenly switched to a radio channel when I pressed up, then to the correct next channel, then to another radio channel.

Left it alone and about two minutes later just changed channel again to one of the shopping ones.... grrr. Changed to 7 again overnight which it hadn't done for a few days.

Also seems to suddenly decide to display the now and next bar in the middle of stuff.

Engineer due last Saturday, didn't turn up, £10 credit to bill.

Booked for tomorrow now....

Mines started changing to Channel 7 overnight again. Its happened the last 2 or 3 nights

Begize 06-09-2005 22:15

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Well, surprise, surprise, no engineer turned up on Saturday. He rang at 2pm, just as the footie started to tell me that my fault was a "known problem" and there was nothing he could do so there was no point in him coming. Hmmm.

He did say it was all to do with a new version of software they released and that needed a patch installing to fix it but that was about it. Best he could suggest was "keep ringing up to see if the message has gone off the faults line, then if you still get a problem they'll send someone out"....

Box was slow changing channels tonight and last night changed to 7 again on it's own. Not done a random channel since last week though. It's now also started locking up when you change channel more often (twice a night over the weekend).

It's about time someone at NTL officially put their hands up, said, yes we have a fault, yes this is what is causing it and this is it what we're doing to fix it, that way we would all know where we stand.

tabatha 09-09-2005 14:54

Anyone know if the fault has been " officially " fixed..?
After a week of no probs STB changed to CH7 again last night..

Yep - ours is still doing it at night, even if it's been left on a channel that doesn't stop broadcasting.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

This has been bugging me for the past two weeks. People state that it happens when no signal is found - bolx! It happens to us mid evenings mostly whilst watching either bbc or itv.

We just got a flyer through the post that we will be able to use our volume button on the remote and i'm wondering if this is the culprit?

mines started doing it again past couple of days?, was fine for about a week, now its started doing it again?

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Funnily enough - mine changed from channel 3 during the news to channel 7 - and required a STB reboot to get channel 3 back again.

Re: STB changing channels on its own

Called CS this evening to report sound problem on STB and got recorded message about the channel change problem and that it should be fixed by 11pm this evening ( 9th Sept )

After waiting got to speak to CS and asked if the resolution was to a local problem or a final fix for the issue that has been going on for some time. Was told it was for the ongoing problem and was scheduled to be fixed by 8pm.

So we can just wait an see I guess.

In Leeds ( ex CWC area ) with Pace 2000 box.

I think it changed of it's own accord from Channel 3 to Channel 6 this evening.
On the other hand, I might have snoozed off and knocked the remote..
