The 10th World

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4730061.stm

Quote:

Astronomers in the United States have announced the discovery of the 10th planet to orbit our Sun.
The largest object found in our Solar System since Neptune was discovered in 1846, it was first seen in 2003 but has only now been confirmed as a planet.
:D

This is the tenth planet found and confirmed :tu: Only 8 planets have been discovered in the history of the world :Yikes: (obviously that doesnt include discovering the planet earth which some people still seem to have trouble with :disturbd: ).

Why is this not a bigger news item? I think it is a historical scientific moment.

Why haven't they got the picture I saw on BBC 24 this morning? They had the planet ringed so we could check it out.I also remember something about it taking 500 years to orbit the sun...Mind I may have misheard. ;)

The name Sedna has been provided by its discoverers.

However, if its planetary status is confirmed, it may be that astronomy's governing body, the International Astronomical Union, will want to reconsider this, to make it more consistent with the mythological names of other planets.

AndrewJ 30-07-2005 15:33

Re: The 10th World

I hope Sedna is a real planet of some kind and is given such a title, it may be something we need to happen to give moral to people to boost exploration of space.

A bit long for the entry in the encyclopedia though...and it just doesn't have that ring to it.How about Deathstar? :D

Though the way I hear it another fancied name is Xena.I was also wondering which major greek gods names were left, that haven't been used in the solar system so far.A female one for a change..Hera,Athena,Demeter,Persephone?

Andromeda has been used I believe elsewhere in the cosmos.

Terra 10?Tenth Earth? We already have one terra and I'm not sure where the other 8 are?
It's the one reason I didn't suggest Gaia as there is already a Gaia.

I think we should stick to a classical theme of gods and legendary creatures. ;)

Re: The 10th World

Why do they name planets after products anyway?

Mercury - Music Awards
Venus - Womens shaving stuff
Mars - Chocolate bar
Jupiter - Insurance company
Saturn - Failed games console
Uranus - Named to start awful jokes
Pluto - After a dog

so the 10th planet should be named after a website! The Cable Forum Planet?

Juno has been taken..

I like Hades as a choice especially as it is so far out from the sun. :tu:

Possibly because it, and also Pluto, should be considered as Kuiper Belt Objects rather than true planets; definitely B list astronomical bodies.

From what I've read, that is a minority opinion amongst astronomers. Sedna (if indeed that is what it's eventually called) was announced a couple of years ago but they waited until all the arguing was over before confirming it as a planet. It is a planet, as is Pluto (which is a smaller body).

As long as I don't become a persecuted minority. (Not that I'm an astronomer.) :)

As you say, it's larger than Pluto. As astrology seems to pay no attention to the distance of a planet from Earth, I await with interest to see how they intend to handle this one. They seem to have managed to incorporate Pluto into astrology without any problem.

Funny that. Or perhaps the fact that no-one has been taking account of Sedna up until now is the reason why horoscopes are useless? :D

I think I read somewhere that some crazy American woman is trying to sue Nasa for crashing a probe into a comet, fractionally altering its trajectory and thereby mucking up her horoscope ... :spin:
