Can't download new e-mails
Hi,
OK, this is strange. This morning I noticed that I haven't been getting any e-mails sine the 2nd of July. My e-mail client is connecting and logging in OK, but the server is saying there are no new messages, even when their are. For example, see the following: Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) POP3 Log started at 07/13/2005 11:11:38 POP3: 11:11:43 [rx] +OK InterMail POP3 server ready. POP3: 11:11:43 [tx] USER mark.levitt POP3: 11:11:44 [rx] +OK please send PASS command POP3: 11:11:44 [tx] PASS ********** POP3: 11:11:44 [rx] +OK mark.levitt is welcome here POP3: 11:11:44 [tx] STAT POP3: 11:11:44 [rx] +OK 0 0 POP3: 11:11:44 [tx] QUIT POP3: 11:11:44 [rx] +OK mark.levitt InterMail POP3 server signing off. I've tried Outlook Express and Thunderbird and both of them fail to retreive new e-mail. However, (and this is the strange bit), I tried logging into the NTL World Webmail and all my e-mail for the last few weeks shows up there (along with nasty grams about my mailbox being too full). Any ideas? |
Re: Can't download new e-mails
It might be worth calling Customer Services to see if there is anything they can do server side.

Re: Can't download new e-mails
What happens if you use LIST rather than STAT?

Re: Can't download new e-mails
You don't have an IP address entered instead of a server name do you?
Latest suspicion is that for some reason you're connecting to the old mail platform somehow. |

Re: Can't download new e-mails
drop into a dos window, and do an nslookup on pop.ntlworld.com
what ip address does it resolve to? |

Re: Can't download new e-mails
hmm
When you login to webmail, are you going to http://webmail.ntlworld.com/ or going through the ntlworld home page? If you PM me the username for your email account i'll see if i can get someone in ntl to check this for you :) |

Re: Can't download new e-mails
OK, just for giggles.. try changing the servername from pop.ntlworld.com to pop.ispmail.ntl.com

Re: Can't download new e-mails
waits with baited breath for explanation as to why it effected you and nobody else.

Re: Can't download new e-mails
Cool, glad that's working.
@simbr: Any chance of an explanation as to why that would work? What's the difference between the two (keep it simple, I'm feeling a bit of a :dunce: tonight :) ). |

and, by the way, THANKS!!! |
Re: Can't download new e-mails
Pure speculation, until simbr comes along to enlighten us, but I assume NTL have changed their pop server to the new address, but redirect the old pop.ntlworld.com to the new addy. Maybe it is this REDIRECTION which only works if connected via NTL, e.g. maybe the redirection is handled by NTL's DNS servers?

Re: Can't download new e-mails
pop.ntlworld.com has changed from the old IP to the new one.
pop.ispmail.ntl.com has always been on the new IP. somehow or other, he's picking up an old cached DNS for pop.ntlworld.com which is odd since he ran nslookup and got the correct IP. |
Re: Can't download new e-mails
Hmm. But if it was a DNS problem, I'd have thought I wouldn't be able to connect.
I was able to connect to a pop server, it's just that the server thought I didn't have any mail. Pure speculation, but I suppose there isn't just one pop server. Perhaps there was some stale caching between different NTL pop servers... |
Re: Can't download new e-mails
There was an upgrade to the mail platform recently. All historic mail was transferred to the new system and for a time new mail was being delivered to both. It appears that new mail is now only being delievered to the new system but for some reason, you have been connecting to the old one.
