Looks like a good deal; being free ;) - going to try it out...

its quite good if you have no other protection and also it is free.

I was part of the trials team and thought it was good and easy to get to grips with.

Nice looking prog, if you haven't anything else and for free  couldn't help but have a quiet laugh at this though

I had to disable Microsoft AntiSpyware before Netguard would install correctly. When installed Netguard found a virus called IFrameBoF@expl that AVG didn't detect. Full marks so far!

Re: ntl Netguard

Good that it's free. Bad they haven't told me about it.

Good that they will be bringing out a version with anti-spyware and firewall (coming soon?!?!?!), bad becuase of this....

Quote:

Disable any firewall or anti-spyware programs you have while you activate Netguard. You should enable these programs again after the install, which should only take a few minutes. For information on disabling your firewall, you should refer to the help screens in your existing firewall. If you use the Windows XP firewall, go to Go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Security Center > Windows Firewall
Whilst they may need to do this, I would urge extreme caution in doing so. My father had the same message when he installed BT Openworld. He had to be connected to the internet to do so. He disabled his anti-virus, and guess what? He was infected.

Disabling firewalls is something you should only be doing if you're behind a router or have your connection to the internet unplugged.

IInterested to hear how people are getting on with it....to be honest I have an extreme (and perhaps irrational) phobia of letting ntl loose with software on my PCs.

Re: ntl Netguard

I'm just glad to see NTL finally listening to comments made years ago. How many problems, virus and trojan infestations have been caused by inexperienced people that went out, bought a PC and decided to join the broadband revolution?
I have always stated that NTL needed to look towards provding dome form of free firewall and anti-virus package on the installation CD to try and stem the flow of infestations on the network.
Thankfully now NTL are being PROactive rather than REactive, yes it will still be up to the end user if they install it or not but at least now they are being informed about the issues and hidden risks that they face when they go onto broadband.
Maybe NTL should send out a weekly email reminding their users to keep their anti-virus definitions up to date too or even just a big flashing logo on the NTLworld frontpage as a weekly reminder, at the very least it will get them into a habit of updating it regularly:(
Well done NTL, I might even install the software so that I can be in a position to offer assistance with it.

I agree, it might naff-off Norton and Zone Labs, but it makes an awful lot of sense for ntl to do this - it will save them money after all with regards to bandwidth of malicious traffic.

However they did put something in their FAQ's saying that a firewall will be later this year, but it is likely that there will be a charge for this - which is a shame.

simbr 13-07-2005 12:17

Re: ntl Netguard

As I understand it the firewall will be optional, which to me does suggest an extra charge. From the FAQs:
Quote:

Does Netguard include anti-spyware, parental control, or a firewall?
Not currently, although we plan to launch these elements in the near future, and will advise you as soon as theyâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢re available. The current Netguard package †“ worth more than £40 - is completely free to ntl customers; however, when we launch our new features, later this year, it is likely that there will be a small charge for these extra elements.
Also note that Netguard is not available to Freedom customers:
Quote:

ntl Netguard is only available to customers in the ntl cable area. It is not available if you receive ntl Freedom services through a BT phone line

Re: ntl Netguard

:td: Despite my earlier optimism I've totally failed to install netguard on my laptop which is wireless networked to my main PC. It installed OK but there was no way that the laptop would then see the network. It seemed to make any wireless networks invisible. It's as if netguard is only programmed to work on the main PC. I'm probably doing something wrong but I don't know what!

That is the IP address that the Laptop was given by the wireless router?

Looks more like the IP of the modem to me.... If it is it might be a good idea to edit at least the last set of digits out..... I could be wrong though, it happens some times, apparently.....

bertJ 13-07-2005 19:10

Re: ntl Netguard

Yes, that's the address given by the wireless router. I checked the PC address and it's the same. The PC is connected to the router and the router to the ntl cable modem. If it's any help everything worked perfectly when AVG was the AV program using Microsoft's firewall. Don't worry too much about it as the laptop is working fine with Netguard removed and AVG back.

Re: ntl Netguard

Netguard, been on my PC for a little while now, and I was very impressed to see two updates today, not a bad little program for zero pounds, and certainly not as bulky as my old Norton 2003.

Nice one ntl, a good little package, and not complicated to use.

simbr 13-07-2005 21:20

Re: ntl Netguard

I've got netguard running sucessfully on two different machines simultaneously on this network, both connected through a switch and a router.
I assume the authentication site picks up the public IP address so the address given to the machine should be immaterial.

The thing ntl have to work with is that not alot of people use either the
ntlworld email address or visit ntlworld.com which are the easist way to tell people about this, I saw the free upgrade and now this free netgaurd.

People I talk to do not even know about the speed upgrade and how long has that been out, if people used one of the above means there would be no grief.

Re: ntl Netguard

it is looking quite a good product, the AV will attempt to update every 3 hours for new definitions, so should be quite quick to react to any new viruses.

NOTE : Please Be Very Carefull if you run Thunderbird, & it finds a virus in your mail, due to the way thunderbird stores mail, the program is unable to remove the individual mail, it just takes the whole mail box....hmmm... so if you run this or Netscape Communicator, then set the AV to notify you if it finds a virus & not to auto clean.....
Quote:

If you use Netscape Communicator or Thunderbird email software, you need to be aware that they store all your email in one file. If Netguard finds a virus in that one email file, and cannot disinfect it, it could possibly delete all your email. In general, we would not recommend you to use Netguard Anti-virus if you use these email packages - but if you do wish to use Netguard, we suggest you use it in "Report Only" mode. This way, you will be notified of a virus, and can manually delete the contaminated email.

Also it looks like it will be additional charges for firewalls & spyware protection.

Netguard will not run on Windows x64. It looks that it attempts to install a 32bit firewall driver, fails but carries on with the installation. When loading the program it just crashes out.

Make sure you download the uninstall utility from the norton website to completely and safely get rid of the norton program you have.

personally, I continue to pay zonelabs for a firewall & antivirus & thank spybot & adaware for their free service..

I'm not saying that it's bad.

It's just that there are alternatives for the people who know, but (I don't know what ntl are planning) it would be good for newbies to the internet.

Though just on a personal note, I would get rid of Norton though, it's crap ;)

Plus, the form filler can be provided by the Google Toolbar in I.E. or by an extension in Firefox.

Personally, I use use Sygate Personal Firewall, AVG and Firefox to browse. These 3 plus a sweep with adaware now and again means that my PC has never had a virus, a trojan or any other form of takeover.

I find the free utilities a lot better than the paid for ones like norton as they tend not to be as bloated and less resource heavy. I have also found that Sygate is a far better and more stable firewall than Zonealarm. Granted I havent used zonalarm in over a year, but Sygate does such a good job i wouldnt go back unless they really messed up a revision.

Always good to stick with what works, and yes, using an alternative browser will reduce the risk of exploitative virus infection, until VXers start to target non standard browesers. :)

Could be it hasn't been able to contact the server it needs to get to for information. You could try uninstalling it through add/ remove programs, reboot, delete the installation folder it was using and then install it again to see if it behaves. Also check that any firewall you are running hasn't changed a seting anywhere that might have caused it to stop running correctly. Some times firewalls misbehave for no reason.

You sure you dont have spyware or something?

I have had it installed since day one and have never had a problem with it. I dont have any bandwidth being used by it at all. I have turned the auto update off. Whenever I go on my pc I just update it myself then start using my pc for whatever I need to use it for. That way it wont interupt me.

My McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 expires tomorrow, and today the offered me 2006 Ver.8 for a disscounted £25. I decided to hold off renewing Mcafee untill I had found out what NTL's Netguard was like. My searching has led me to this very helpfull site. Having read all the posts in this thread I'm afraid I'm still undecided on wether to ditch Mcafee.
I must say I have found it has done its job in protecting both my son and my own PC's, and alot better than Norton's Internet Security Suite. As it is costly for me to pay for both subscriptions I feel I should try a freebie now as many other people seem to do with no problems. I am dissapointed that NTL have indicated that they will charge when they introduce other features, and they claim the present Netguard service is "over £40's worth" although it doesn't seem to have the equivelant features of the payed for suites I've been using over the last few years.
Anyway as time is running out, can any one offer some expert advice for this undecided subscription paying fool!
Thanks in anticipation.

It dates back to when I had great faith in the abilities of Spybot and relied upon it alone. After a while Spybot kept telling me my PC was clean and in spite of my thinking my PC was getting sluggish I believed it.
Eventually it dawned on me something was definately wrong and IIRC I installed Pest Patrol and Adaware. After running Spybot and getting an all clear I ran Pest Patrol and Adaware and together they found 113 problems.
After that I think relying on just one anti spy app is kinda pointless.
But each to there own.

hmmmm.... like you say 'each to their own' but in my opinion it seems you are over protected. I couldnt be bothered doing the 8 or whatever the ammount is of scans you do.

Well ZAP has it's own intergral spyware scanner which updates pretty regularly. However if I run adaware or Spybot they both pick up what ever ZAP has missed and what the other has missed. It does give one pause for thought.Indeed only once has Spybot ever said my system was clean after an Adaware scan. :erm: Odd isn't it? I guess it depends on what one programmer regards as spyware as another may not know about it.:)

Re: ntl Netguard

Has anyone had this problem with Netguard? For about 5-6 months my laptop (XP Home SP2) has been freezing up after irregular amounts of time, usually (but not always) when logged on to Runescape.com and left inactive. My firewall - ZoneAlarm - recently alerted me to CSS-DVP, a background virus monitor made by Command Software Systems Inc. I've now come to believe (98%) that ntl Netguard uses this CSS software. Reports on the Web indicate that CSS-DVP causes instabilities in Windows XP Home with SP2. Look in Windows\system32\drivers for CSS-DVP.sys and in Program Files\Common Files\Command Software for the rest (which I know I never knowingly installed)!
