ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
Just received a flyer through the door offering ntl Broadband 1mb to new customers at £9.99 per month for a year. As an existing £17.99, 1mb customer I was naturally somewhat put out.
Phoned customer services and they offered me 3 months at £9.99. I suppose that's better than nothing but I did wonder about cancelling my existing contract and starting again. Is this another example of how ntl alienate their existing customers? |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
You could cancel but you wouldn't be seen as a new customer if you rang NTL up afterwards to try and get the promo. Be happy to be savng money for 3 months, hopefully sometime down the line NTL will look to recognise it's longstanding customers.

Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
I don't mean to sound harsh, but this topic has been done to death recently and always end in the same argument.
A quick session with the search facility will allow you to read through most of what people think about this topic. |

2) This happens with pretty much every company that you get a service/product from, so it's just something you'll have to live with. 3) You can't cancel as you have entered into a 12 month contract. |

Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
This is a fact of life that many many companies offer incentives to make potential customers take on their services. These incentives are usually short duration. If you look at many of the ADSL ISPs they have similar new customer offers too.
The only way you might get an offer out of ntl as an existing customer is to threaten to leave (and you can only do that once your 12 month minimum contract has expired). It may then be a case of brinksmanship as to whether you get a deal you like. It's not just broadbadn that works like this, mortages are another example (Nationwide are promoting heavily against that). All these incentives tie you into a minimum full price deal after the initial discout or other enticement. |

I am happy because I was paying £24 a month for my BB and now because of all the changes I am only paying £17.99 a month, so being a long term customer has paid off for me
|
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
I think that ntl have been fair to their customers so far.....the free BB speed upgrades, the general stability of the system as a whole....or am I easily pleased? :)
|
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
Well I also phone NTL because ofc this and I am now getting BB for £9.99 and thats the price its going be every month for a year, I have been with NTL BB for a long time and they done ot for me, so it is worth a try if you want to get it.
|
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
How about a mod close this thread as it is always the same when a new deal comes out.
ntl are a "for profit" company not a charity if people do not like what they are paying please go to a different provider, I think ntl are a fare priced isp in the market at the moment. |

Not wishing to tread on any toes but I'm a bit bemused by what seems to be the attitude of some people to this form of cynical marketing. There seems to be a suggestion that I should be grateful to ntl for any small reduction in my monthly fees. It reminds me slightly of the attitude that existed in some up-market shops - I should feel privileged that they're allowing me to spend my money in their store! |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
If these offers are only for new customers then why do they persists in sending you flyers with your bill, but even worse they print them on your bill!!!

there has been a recent trend where companies are starting to extend offers to current customers following orange's success. I havent had the flyer but then again I have had no flyer's since I complained to NTL about getting such crap with my bill's. If the offer is for a year and the min contract is for a year then I would guess at £9.99 they must be making a profit or its a very dumb move. As it would then allow the customer to be a loss leader for the entire length of their contract.

Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
The deals available to new customers, not be available to existing, they are incentives to get you to join ntl. Anyone who is now with ntl will have joined and had the opportunity to benefit from some offer or other at the time they first subscribed. Although it would be nice to get further offers as time marches on, there has to be limits to discounts avaialble which are intended to win customers over from the potential dispruption and upheavale of changing service.
Existing customers don't have it that bad. As TV packages change we get the new channels, and as BB changes getting faster or costs frequently have lowered, those have become available. Althouhg conversely there have been adverse changes of some tarrif changes, or alterations in the Ts & Cs or AUP. |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
NTL, like all companies, have very large fixed costs which are not dependent on customer numbers or revenue. These costs have to be met from customers subscriptions. If you are a NTL customer you have to pay your share of these costs. Your share however will reduce the more customers and revenue that NTL get. It is in your interest therefore for NTL to acquire new customers. NTL, like most other companies, give special offers to new customers to encourage them to join. The number of new customers receiving those special offers is relatively small in relation to the total customer base and it is possible that those customers are paying less for their services than the cost of providing them. NTL hope that the new customers will remain long term customers and increase their spend with the company thus turning them from loss makers to profit generators. It would be impossible for all customers to be given the same special offers as this would reduce profitability to the extent that there would be no cash for infrastructure maintenance and renewal.
Don't be fooled into thinking that all NTL special offers generate a profit for the company. Likewise prices charged by other ISPs may be at a loss making level just intended to gain customer share and ultimately will have to increase to move the company into profitability. |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
Well I want to add 2 points.
1 - Its deals like this that make so many customer's ring retentions with fake intentions of leaving just so they get a discount, because they KNOW that ntl can offer them a lower price and stay in profit. 2 - I keep hearing the comment "we have all had our own deal when we signed up so live with it", but I didnt get any deal anywhere near this magnitude I got free install which seems normal now anyway but I paid the standard monthly fee's and I am sure many others did as well. NTL are not a charity true so why are they been a charity case to get new customer's. __________________ Quote:

I dont know what people are so fussed about. You have to offer new customers deals to get people to come to you. Its good for new people to get it for £9.99. Ntl no doubt lose money on it but make it later with the new customers.
I really think people should stop complaining about the £9.99 thing. Broadband is a good price right now and its come along way from the 56k 1.5p a minute that I used to pay. Its 1mb for £17.99 and thats a great deal, people should remember what low speeds we used to pay for and how cheap it is now and how fast it is now instead of worrying about what new customers are offered. Also my speed now works! woo! |

i'm paying £37.99 for that, sometimes i'm paying £37.99 for dial up :D :D i'm sure i read somewhere that ntl are going to bring out a 2 or even 3 Mb bb service pheeeuwe :Yikes: i cant wait for that to be launched pmsl SALEM |

I phoned up and discovered that they had managed to have me on all three cable modem tarriffs at the same time  despite complaining about being incorrectly billed for the eigth month on the trot
The girl gave me a 'backdated discount till april' (will wait and see what happens about that as the bill is invariably wrong or has some bogus charges on it). She also "applied the code" that makes you have the £9.99 deal for a year, or at least said she did. I have had conversations with 'retention' before now and the things I have been told that will happen simply do not. I asked previously about a guy who claimed he had 'lognoted' my previous complaint and there was simply no record of my phoning in at all. The bloke had simply given me a load of bull to get me off the line. Basically, if my bill is wrong next month (making it the ninth time I will have phoned in about it) I will leave and they will lose my custom. What's more, I will wait till the bill gets issued and stop the direct debit by way of my 'fine' to ntl for being such a shower of sh*t |

To someone on another forum, I said...
NTL Broadband 1Mbit / 3Gb @ £9.99 per month for 12 months is a deal worth taking ... for 12 months, then DUMP THEM. I cannot see how this deal is not going to result in churn from large numbers of ISP tarts, as well as resentment from those taking broadband and more, all at full price. I would say that at every price point, there is an ADSL deal that is better than NTL broadband, and I'm just about losing patience with the neverending proxy foulups of NTL. I like the idea of cable, as compared to what seems a very unsound practice of stuffing high frequencies down twisted pair phone lines, but I'm basically into comparing (speed * quota / price) - I'd take a 512k no/large quota ADSL over NTL's 1Mbit any day - currently on the 300k NTL |

Yep! speed issues done to death - the other upgrades were automatic (unless you needed a PACE STB replaced with something that could do 2Mbit) as there was no downside.
Unless NTL plan to completely revise the tariffs, a 12 month deal at a good price, followed by an 80% increase is relying a lot on peoples inertia, and perhaps on fear that a cheap ADSL will not be as good ... if it was like mobile deals, it would be a 12 month special price with an 18 month tie-in ... oops, don't want to give them ideas! |

Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
It would be interesting to know how many new customers are being signed up at £9.99 and whether NTL are providing extra infrastructure to support them or will everyones service degrade as a result of thousands of migrants joining at this special rate. I have never received any incentive to join,i have paid the full rate from sign up. If the service is perceived by me and thousands of others to be good value at £17.99 then I'm sure others can see the light without offering it at a loss(?) of £9.99 AND annoying the rest of the loyal customer base. I had a letter from the "customer concern" department which really wasnt worth their while writing as it said very little. I'll just ring and cancel. I'd rather pay MORE to a company that doesnt think its ok to poo on its existing customers.
|
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99

Then if they cant afford it why do it at all?
If they cant afford to expand their network then they should concentrate on making more profit from existing customers and slow down their growth rate to something they can handle. This can be achieved by stopping the silly offers for new customers so current customers dont get annoyed and ring for discounts. It will also allow them to improve service quality. |

Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
I know enough about business thanks having got qualifications in business studies I also have experience in the internet industry.
1 - A company doesnt need to agressively acquire new customers to get profit growth. 2 - A company doesnt need to do incentives 365 days a year to gain customers. and the big one 3 - A company doesnt need to have the incentive run through the ENTIRE length of the contract. NTL seem to be very very desperate for customers, the fact that they have high customer turnover costs them money they make less ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£ÃƒÆ ’‚£ per customer. Customer installs cost money, Customer cancellations cost money, Giving customers discounts to stop them leaving costs money, Charging customers slightly above half price for an entire year costs money, Upgrading infrastructure which has to be done in response to growth costs money. All this means NTL make less money per customer, fact is if the customer pays the full price from day 1 they are much less likely to leave at the end of their min contract period to jump ship to the next offer available, another fact is if there is no new customer offer then someone ringing retentions cant play on the fact that ntl can afford to price the service lower, fact is existing customers feel satisfied and are more likely to give good reccomendation to friends and family. You never answered the question wether you think NTL make a profit at £9.99 if they dont you think it is good business practice to sell a service at a loss for the year with no garantuee of full turnover of that customer? NTL need to stop comparing themselves to BT and look at the market as a whole, people WILL pay more for a better quality service and there is a type of customer who isnt looking for the best priced deal all the time, that is the type of customer that is profitable. This probably explains why telewest has been making more profit. This is good for consumers in that they can take advantage of NTL but it makes current customers feel they been ripped of and want to leave and the customers that NTL attract will be low turnover. |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
Chrysalis, qualifications do not equate to full knowledge and understanding. I have come across hundreds of people with qualifications in business studies and many other fields who couldn't last a month in the real world.
Do NTL make a profit out of giving someone 12 months broadband for £9.99 per month? I very much doubt it when you consider the costs involved in installation, supply of equipment, billing, etc. So why do you think they do it? Or do you think that they do make a profit? Did NTL make a profit out of dial-up internet when they were supplying it for free? Did Dixons make a profit out of dial-up internet when they launched the Freserve product in 1998? Why did they launch a subscription free service when no other company had one? Perhaps the one million customers (30% of the UK internet market) that they signed up in the first five months could give you a clue. I don't feel ripped off because new customers are getting a better deal than me. I look at the price I am paying and the service I am getting and compare it to offers from other ISPs. I have a service that does what I want it to at a competitive price and with a very good service level. I may be able to get a slightly cheaper and faster service but I couldn't be sure that it would be as reliable as my NTL broadband service has been. There would also be all the hassle of changing suppliers, an important fact and a bit of a pointer for you. |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
how would you like it if say your gas company offered half price gas for the next 12 months for new customers only. or BT offered free line rental for 12 months for new customers only.
offering 1meg BB for £10 a month for 12 months is bizarre esp when it's only for new customers or those existing ones that find out about the offer. |

Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
It still seems a bizarre, even desperate deal...
Inertia will probably enable then to keep SOME of the customers when their special price and minimum contract both end together, but unless we are going to see a new, lower cost "basic" broadband - maybe a PAYG with the same £9.99 charge for a limited quota, then the rise from £9.99 to £17.99 ought to be enough to trigger a search around. |
Re: ntl 1mb BB at £9.99
I have experience in the internet market as well. The response of other customers in this thread backs up my belief that I am right about customers been ****ed off.
I also doubt you need a gcse to work out that what NTL are doing is just plain dumb. Your example of dixons is not comparing apple to apple 1 - Freeserve was a new brand to get customers to use a new brand that kind of incentive is needed, hence pipex did a similiar thing when they launched. NTL already have a large customer base so why are they doing it? 2 - Dixons were not in the same finincial trouble NTL are in now so service wasnt compromised, examples of compromised service are NTL not been able to afford to upgrade all areas to digital so yes current customers are affected. 3 - Dixons had no current customers to **** of since there was none it was a new company. |

I got the Brand New Customers Only story, a load of bull about not being able to use a BT phone and ADSL at the same time and the distinct impression that I could go to another ISP as long as I didnt ring NTL (I was being nice honest. :) I worked in a call centre for 7 years ) I'm going to try Customer retentions tomorrow (0800 052 1474) tomorrow but if nowt is happening then I'll be across to the Alternatives to NTL threads.
