Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

Well nothing has been said about it appearing anywhere and no advertising for the channel I have seen indicates that Gay TV has appeared on ntl. Also, there is no such channel available on the STB I have (and I think I am in a Bromley area) and all that are listed are the nine heterosexual adult PPV services available. There's also no mention of it on ntl's website.

I may be wrong but don't you pay £5 per night rather than £5 per movie?

grandmaster 10-07-2005 10:36

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

5 pounds a night is a bit steep is'nt it?

Rillington 10-07-2005 10:47

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

I wouldn't pay it, not for 18s anyway. For a R18 movie maybe but OfCom has said that we are not adult enough to view R18 movies in case the children happen to steal the PIN codes, which to me is far more difficult than putting a DVD into a DVD player and pressing paly.

Anyway, back on topic...

IIRC, Gay TV replaced Red Hot Climax a couple of weeks ago. Try rebooting then see if it appears in the listings.

Rillington 11-07-2005 00:43

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

Well I will go to the foot of my proverbial stairs. Gay TV has, indeed, replaced Red Hot Climax. Given that this is the first time in the history of ntl that it has allowed gay content to be available one would have thought they might mention it somewhere. As I said, there is no mention of it on their website.

Bets on, however, that none of the other gay channels which might hold some interest, such as Gaydate TV, Gaydar Radio nor Faze TV (when it launches) appear however.

garyparson 11-07-2005 02:56

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

Is this for real? Another channel that will be going to the bottom (no pun intended [ADMIN EDIT - Simon M] - Just behave, you know, THINK before you post - Is it REALLY that hard ???) of my list. I wish they'd make an option so that you can't see channel's that you don't want to.

With respect why should we get a whole host of Gay tv channels? my gay friends find it insulting, there are no heterosexual tv channels, tv channels cater for the general public.

It is bad enough as it is with so many adult channels, Ofcom should force the adult channels/Playboy/TVX etc to cater for people of every sexual orientation.

Rillington 11-07-2005 12:23

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

Yes, it's catering for gay men.

I recall The Adult Channel did exactly that and had a gay night once a week. It was a shame they chose to remove it. I guess that as more space has become available providers have chosen to launch individual channels aimed at specific target audiences. Gay TV, for example, is one of a group of a number of other adult stations, the rest being heterosexual.

As for your other point, it's each to their own. The other TV channels do not, IMO, cater for a gay audience which is why individual channels have sprung up. For example, the BBC has not broadcast any programme of any description for the gay licence fee payers (who contribute 10%+ to the licence fee pot) since 2002. I am sure ntl will not carry Faze TV but if it did I'd subscribe. Also, I'd listen to Gaydar Radio but, again, ntl have chosen not to make it available to me.

And before anyone says anything, I cannot have Sky where I live.

'Gay' audience? What do you mean? Is the a 'gay' way to decorate a house? Or a 'gay' way to broadcast a cop show? Or a 'gay' way of listening to the radio?

I think what he is saying is quite simple.

for example you have Men and Motors that is for a Hetrosexual ppl or do you not class that as broadcasting to a specific audience?

Er, I think he means people who are gay and want to watch programmes which relate specifically to gay interests. There are lots of specialist media; look on ntl and you'll find Christian channels etc. They cater for specific audiences who are united by their beliefs, experience and/or interests.

There are none apart from the interest in the same sex, which is why my gay friends find the whole issue of 'gay tv and radio' so vulgar.

People fight to be accepted as normal but then want to be treated differently at the same time.

How about gay porn, the availability on ntl of which is, I believe, the subject of this thread? ;)

There are a range of lifestyle issues which impact on gay men and women, hence the availability of magazines such as Attitude which, by and large, appeal to gay men.

Hmm!I wonder where I put my deckchair? ;)

The problem is I can actually see both sides of this argu..errr points of view.Sometimes 'hetero' programming doesn't cover certain aspects that would be of use and interest to the gay community for fear of causing offence...to those not of a gay disposition. However after years of trying to get equal treatment maybe gays DON't want to be a special case and would rather 'gay' issues were regarded as mainstream.Which it has to be said they are only partially so at the moment.

Mainly health issues and specifics of sexual practice for those who are wondering what I'm on about. :erm:

Quite right infact many do not even partake in said activity.

I still stand by my point though, there is enough adult channels already and there is no need for exclusively gay television channels either.

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

I wouldn't go as far as to say that there is need, carte blanche - the people who've set up the station obviously feel that there is.

Having said that, it's a PPV channel so, if they don't get people subscibing or buying as a one-off, it won't last very long anyway

Agreed. We don't need seperate channels for homosexuals (which, to me, is like Apartheid). We need greater representation of Gay issues on mainstream TV.

A need? well that's a whole different debate. Do we need hetero porn channels? I don't personally but clearly there's an audience. Indeed, if there is a market for Gay TV it will survive, if not it won't. On the point of why "Gay TV", I would suggest this is a necessity of marketing, a need to communicate baldly what the channel offers to its target audience. Hetero channels can afford to be more subtle - Men & Motors doesn't call itself "Cheaply Generated Soft Porn With A Few High Power Cars & Bikes For Sexually Turbo-charged Hetero Men"! The channel owners need to hit promote their product in the most impactive way; calling it Gay TV is certainly a good start.

Finally, this is gay porn we're talking about. How can it not be a seperate channel for gay (and bisexual) people?

Not strictly true as standard porn channel girl on girl is aimed specifically at hetro men and has little reality for women.

I presume that a lot of gay men and women are turned on by porn just as heterosexual ones are, so it is only natural that they want a channel that shows this

That's what I thought really. Presumably (and I'll have to be careful here!), the majority of gay men and women probably wouldn't find 'straight' porn a turn on, whereas 'gay' porn is directed at their (assumed) desires or fantasies.

That also sort of tunes in to why 'lesbian porn' appeals to a lot of blokes - the idea of two women together (or *ahem* with the bloke) is a fantasy for them).

Having said that, I've never seen any gay porn, so I dunno really :)

To clarify, Gay TV offers 18-rated movies on a pay-per-night basis costing £5 per night for up to 7.5 hours of content.

Faze TV is a new channel launching on 1 september aimed at gay men. It is only to be available on Sky/satellite as I get the feeling, fro wording on their websiote, that ntl (and TW) have decided NOT to carry the channel. It tells people on cable wanting Faze to "lobby ntl/TW." Hardly a surprise they ain't carrying it IMO.

Faze TV is the creation of an ex Sky boss. Do you know how much Sky are being charged for the rights to broadcast Faze? Do you know if ntl have approached Faze about broadcasting the channel? Do you know, if they have, how much they want to charge ntl for the rights? And if so, do you know whether it's financially viable to do so? My guess is 'no' to all those questions. So your opinion stems from what basis?

May I direct the honorable gentleman to the post I made last time he brought up the subject of Faze TV:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...17&postcount=5

It should go someway to explaining the situation.

Rillington 18-07-2005 15:50

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

Thank you for giving me that link and what you say is perfectly reasonable. As you say, channels launch on Sky and some arrive on cable later.

However. Faze TV confirmed a launch date many months ago and ntl would have been aware of this. Therefore a deal could have been sorted out by now if ntl had been interested in taking the channel. ntl WILL make money out of it from every person who subscribes becasuse it is a premium service and given that this channel is not only a UK first but also serving a niche which doesn't have its own channel with varied content (rather than the 18s of Gay TV or the dating services) and also serving a specific audience which subscribes to ntl which one would asusme ntl doesn't want to annoy and loose, one would think they would be interested in carrying Faze TV. Guess I'm wrong.

Stuart 18-07-2005 16:59

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

In fairness to NTL, we do not know the specifics of the situation. We only know what Faze have said. It's entirely possible that Faze are the reason NTL aren't carrying it. It's entirely possible that Faze are not willing to accept the rates NTL are willing to pay. After all, NTL's total costs for carryimg a small channel are probably the same as those for running a big channel, but will be divided amongst fewer viewers, so therefore, the fee per viewer will be higher. It's also entirely possible that Faze want a fair higher percentage of the £5 a night (or whatever that NTL/TW users would pay than the Cable Co is willing (or able) to offer.

Of course, Faze would not tell you that on their site..

It's a pity Sam B is no longer around. She was involved in Contract negotiations, and could have given us a definitive answer as to why they aren't carrying it.

In the meantime, if you want this channel, do as Faze says. Write to NTL. If enough people write, thay might be persuaded to carry it.

Rillington 20-07-2005 16:33

Re: GAY TV - Launched on PPV

Very possible Stuart. Also, shame Sam isn't able to answer my query. To me, Faze TV is a channel I want to be able to view but five weeks ahead of launch, ntl are not going to allow me to view it, regardless of what the reason might be.

Gay TV's EPG number appears to be 838 on ntl.

Am very disappointed about Faze deciding not to launch. Similar channels seem to work in the USA and on the continent so why not in the UK? Maybe they should have opted to remain a subscription channel.

However,. what disturbed me was that I got the feeling that BSkyB did not want a gay channel on their platform and yes I draw the obvious conclusions.
