Re: Old Pc To New Pc ?

you can save it to file if you wish ie floppy or cd so if you have any probs across the network you have other options,I can imagine this is going to be easy,I would not save important passwords to my pc full stop. Some site passwords yes but others no

I've used this a few times and it works quite well. The only fiddly bit is if you have multiple accounts. The way I did it was similar to how its described in the link except I chose files and settings for each user but only chose shared documents for the first user. Otherwise you get multiple copies of the shared document, and in my case the shared music is massive.

It doesn't work as well for non M$ applications though like Thunderbird.

A lot of browsers and email clients have export functions built into them anyway. FAST works well if you know what it is capable of.

Paul, FAST is very good at transfering settings. What 'might' be more challenging is transfering the FAST output file from one system to the other. In theory the XP wizards should allow you to do this, but if you have a USB key that will work on the old system it will probably be easier.
I suggest you run FAST on the old PC first to see how much data needs to be transfered.

Files and Settings Transfer wizard

You can create a copy of the wizard from the new XP PC, even if the old one doesn't have XP : http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;306187

Re: Old Pc To New Pc ?

ok you can call me silly but the new pc does it need to be connected to my router or is fast done via disc ?

in other words can i run fast then unplug my old computer and connect my new one and hey presto ?

Re: Old Pc To New Pc ?

FAST will create a 'backup' of the data you want to transfer. How you move that backup to the new PC is up to you -
Some of the options are
USB Key
CD-RW
File transfer across the router

Personally I would either use a USB key or setup an FTP server on the new PC (FTP is an optional component of XP - at least Pro!) and FTP the file across the network.

How are you trying to burn the files to disc? Sounds like you're just trying to drag and drop using Windows Exporer?

Bear in mind that FAST copies everything in My Documents (and all it's sub folders such as My Music, My Pictures, My Movies etc), so it could be taking a long time as it is copying a lot of data.

You will find that it only appears on the CD as a couple of files. FAST "archives" your files and settings, so this file is an archive (similar to a zip file).
