Is this PC right for me?

I may get this PC, I use the computer for chatting on MSN, Downloading Music and Video, Yahoo Pool etc. Do you reckon it will be alright for all those things?

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Not a bad spec but Network LAN not specified? Do you connect via ethernet or USB at the moment?

Michelle_Smith 30-06-2005 21:54

Re: Is this PC right for me?

I am going to get internet on it via a wirless router

Paul K 30-06-2005 21:57

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Might have problems with it then, it has no wireless capabilities listed and the specs are unsure wether it has a network interface onboard. You may be better off asking for more info in store to be honest as they may know for definite.

www.meshcomputers.com

Honestly you will get a better pc for you money there.

Onboard graphics
Cheapo TFT
Just not worth £400 IMHO.

Re: Is this PC right for me?

That spec makes me laugh and is why PC world is naff

I'm running ATM..

2200XP, 1gb Ram, 80gb hdd, 9600pro with onboard lan, a decent case..... and a 17" CRT monitor.

Granted the monitor is CRT, but I got this PC about a year ago now.... you can pick 17" (As opposed to that cheapo PC world one) TFT's up for 160 quid now.

As said, try Mesh, or maybe a prebuilt one from Overclockers may do the trick...

Strzelecki 30-06-2005 22:50

Re: Is this PC right for me?

That PC does have onboard LAN.
Full Spec is Celeron D 340 (2.92GhZ), 256Mb PC3200 RAM, Santiago (PS S800-CM) mATX, 2 PCI + 1AGP + 2 Mem slots, Seagate 80Gb 7200 rpm Hard drive, NEC ND-3530A DVD±RW DL Drive, SiS 661FX onboard Graphics, Realtek ALC665 onbaord sound, Packard Bell Keyboard and Mouse + crap case plus a dose of Packard Bell 'quality'. Any other info needed just ask.

Is the Mesh offering for £399. Half a gig of RAM, and 160 Gig (SATA) HD (as opposed to 256RAM and 80 Gig HD. It still has onboard grapics though...

Halcyon 30-06-2005 23:11

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Hmmmm, as has already been said, you may find an even better spec for that money as PC World like to charge a bit extra.
The real downer on that original spec you posted is the 256mb Ram. You'd expect atleast 512 or 1GB these days.

AndrewJ 30-06-2005 23:13

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Gareth I know that OB graphics would do that but for £400 she could get a system with at least AGP x300 graphics.

it is rip off how much they ask for such a basic package.

EDIT: Corrected the HE to She ;)

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Yep, fair enough... not particularly good value for money. btw, think that michelle is a girl's name ;)

Explains the visit to PC world then ;) j/k :p:

If you still wanted to buy from PCWorld then this would be better: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...fm=0&sm=0&tm=2
if your store still has one in stock, and then choiose your own TFT or CRT.

AndrewJ 30-06-2005 23:25

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Again only 256ddr, she needs at least 512mb DDR because PCworld will only fit the el cheapo boggo Ram.

This http://www.meshcomputers.com/updated/matrix_1_1.htm seems a nice offer but will push your budget a bit, although it has onboard the extra ram will help compensate that, unless you dump the tft and go for the upgraded visual card to improve performance.

My pc is from them and cost me £550 ( without monitor ) I have a 17inch crt here for sale though.

Strzelecki 30-06-2005 23:29

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Ok OK so I know every likes to have a dig at PC World. But they don't make Packard Bell machine's NEC do and they usually fit Hynix RAM in their machines, plus and extra 256Mb RAM would set you back less than £30. I personally would never consider buying a prebuilt machine.

AndrewJ 30-06-2005 23:32

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Nor would I there motherboards are rubbish and problematic, the cases rarely have enough cooling, there drives are cheap makes, they have awful crap installing restore disks.

There CS aftercare is a pile of poo, and to rub salt in the wound when you claim on warranty for anything its like getting a gorilla to cycle around the world.

Strzelecki 30-06-2005 23:35

Re: Is this PC right for me?

I meant from anywhere:)
Anyway, the Mesh one looks good, probably check out Evesham too and don't forget to check the delivery costs and add that to the total too. Oh and check the warranty to, is it on site or return to base?

AndrewJ 30-06-2005 23:37

Re: Is this PC right for me?

mesh said it would arrive on a date and it did prompt to me. There aftercare been great, and the tower only one problem, I had to tie back some cables which was catching the cpu fan which moved off there mount in transit.

Cost: £0.10 time : 1minute

No way of knowing, the specification sheet says:

Quote:

802.11g Wireless Network Ready Not Specified
You will need to speak to someone in the store. I seriously doubt that it will be though.

Having said that, you can pick up the parts that you would need to make it wireless capable for not a lot of dosh.

Halcyon 30-06-2005 23:47

Re: Is this PC right for me?

It doesnt specify it being Wireless ready.
To make it wireless compatible you would need to have a wireless adapter added in.
They could probably fit it for you so you dont loose your warranty.

Strzelecki 30-06-2005 23:48

Re: Is this PC right for me?

It is wireless 'compatible' but does not have any wireless device installed as standard. Want the full spec of the one too?

That machine is not wireless compatible as is, Michelle.

I think you will struggle to find one that is in the price range you're looking at. However, it's not that big a deal to make a machine wireless compatible. You can get a pci card that will make it compatible. Prices are about £20-30, but it will have to be fitted in the machine. Doing this is quite easy really.

Strzelecki 30-06-2005 23:52

Re: Is this PC right for me?

Doing so will not void your warranty with PC World either, provided the install is done correctly. Just follow the instructions. (Don't get the store to do it as 1. you can't get that machine in store and 2. they will charge you £29.99 to put it in for you).

I am going to get the LINKSYS WRT54GSUK router with LINKSYS WMP54GSUK
PCI card.

Re: Is this PC right for me?

That'll do fine. People here will tell you that's one of the best setups to go for.

If you look at the spec of there gfx,the intel extreme does not exist on new boards as the word extreme is deamed a lie

Are the usb wireless adapters no good?? no need to crack the case then

Ah, you just highlighted a big mistake on the website, which I missed. Intel graphics on a AMD based board!? errr it has Unichrome onboard graphics (MSI OEM MS6786 motherboard). Why is it a lie? I though it meant Extreme as in extremely poor.:)

Re: Is this PC right for me?
