Google Earth?

Google Earth
Quote:

Want to know more about a specific location? Dive right in -- Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the worldÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s geographic information at your fingertips.
From http://google.blognewschannel.com/in...hing-for-free/
Quote:

The program lets you do smooth sailing flybyes of the entire Earth. You can easily fly to any spot on the globe, by entering any associated data, like street addresses, place names or lat/long coordinates. There are overlays that put additional information on the map, like roads, international boundaries, terrain, 3D buildings, crime statistics, schools, stadiums, any number of interesting stuff.

You can do Local searches in the program, with icons on the map and a display on the side showing your results. You can leave notes, called †œplacemarksÃƒà ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚à ‚ all over the map, so you can remember where all sorts of places are. Searches and placemarks can be saved as bookmarks in †œMy PlacesÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬Ã‚Â. Everything can be output in an XML format called KML, that will allow the vast popularity of Google Maps to continue in Earth. You can also email a JPEG of the map, or send a KMZ file if you know the recipient has Earth installed.

Quite possibly though I'm not 100% sure. I would expect them to be the same images rather than Google using and therefor paying for 2 different sets of images.

Heh ... it's almost that good actually. I just did a postcode search on where I grew up, for a comparison, and it was nowhere near as good. But I can actually see my house where I live now. Take a look. We live in a semi-deatched, so I've marked the half of the building that's ours:

You'd be surprised ... rural crime ain't no joke. We had our garden chairs and petrol mower nicked last weekend. And we're close enough to Glasgow for gangs of neds* in their mums Corsas to come up here at the weekend for drunken BBQs on the lochside.

:( They get about don't they, Chi's car was keyed along the passenger side Monday night, we're hoping it will T-Cut and polish out. Why don't people respect other peoples property anymore?

If you look at the UK as a whole, most of it is picked out in lurid green, while some strips are in a more muted colour. If you're lucky enough to live in one of the duller strips, those are the ones that have been imaged at a higher resolution.

I've just had another look at my place and for some reason it's even better now than it was before! Something to do with available bandwidth perhaps.

IMO......if google improve their resolution and coverage, google earth will be one of the most widely used and interesting bits of software of all time. The reason that I say this is that I think it has enormous potential as a learning tool and as a navigation tool. It is immensely absorbing and has the potential to be very useful..........and that's as a beta!
It will make the planet smaller and more 'accessible'! :nworthy: :)

Funny thing is.... it always works when I try it lol. Once you get onto a server it should be ok. I'd try again in a bit, the server traffic might have lightened up a bit. It does tend to download quite a bit of image data when you first use it.

Re: Google Earth?

I'm having the same problems as well.

Ruled out firewall so far.

Can ping all of the relevant servers so that's not a problem either.

SD, have you got any popup blockers installed? Apparently that can sometimes case an issue. I haven't, so that doesn't help me.

Paul K 30-06-2005 20:32

Re: Google Earth?

Quote:

I can't contact the Google Earth servers.

Most likely, a personal firewall program, aggressive antivirus software, or adware is preventing Google Earth from freely accessing the internet via TCP/IP (port 80). Please check your router/firewall settings to set GoogleEarth.exe as an exception.

Tips regarding other common problems our customers have reported appear below:

- If you use the McAfee software, try turning off the firewall or configuring it separately from the virus protection.

- If you use Norton software, check that you have only one "permit" rule set for Google Earth. Norton software allows opposing "permit" and "block" rules to be set for the same application. Doing so results in a "block" of that application.

- Software that blocks popups can interfere with Google Earth. Try disabling this software before launching Google Earth.

- Microsoft's SP2 upgrade automatically enables a Windows Firewall. You might need to configure GoogleEarth.exe as an exception. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click "Start."
2. Choose "Settings," then "Control Panel."
3. Click on "Windows Firewall."
4. Select the "Exceptions" tab.
5. Click on the "Add Program" button and choose "GoogleEarth.exe."
6. Select "OK" and "OK" again.
7. Restart Google Earth.

If you've recently downloaded free software, it's possible that malicious software, commonly referred to as "adware," was bundled with this download and installed without your knowledge. If you suspect that adware is affecting your ability to use Google Earth, please let us know.
So they blame pop up stoppers and firewalls.

Yep, like I said the same error. I would hazzard a guess that you will be able to get to the servers tomorrow morning. Once you are on the servers you are laughing as you should be able to access data no problem. I can access new images even Chi can't get on the authentication server.

Well most server based services use an authenticated request system. A user requests access to certain data, the access priviledges are authenticated and the data sent. If Google isn't authenticating anymore computers or users then I suppose this error will occur for people until Google start authenticating new users again so that they are allowed access to the data.

How are they authenticating new users without requiring any kind of sign-up? Is the app somehow enabled by Google the first time it connects?

If so, you lot who can't get on are unlucky, my dad signed onto it this afternoon for the first time and it let him on alright. He had to download the installer from an alternative location mind, ;) as Gooooooogle have shut theirs down ... perhaps their switching off authentication is to prevent people flooding the service after acquiring the installer over BitTorrent or whatever.

If you subscribe then obviously it has to know what service you are subscribed to, so I suppose it initially checks to see if you are subscribed to any paid service before it loads up any data or images.
Also I think the first time you run Google Earth it heads to the server to download certain data to enable the software to run (server locations, basic primary maps and images), if you don't have this basic data on your PC it can't then access any further information. The initial file size when you download Google Earth is about 10Mb but as soon as you access any point on the globe it immediately starts streaming image data to your PC..... lots of data lol
Oh and the $400 subscription is a commercial service and those figures are annual fees too.

Still no luck getting onto it, I bet the non-paying users get much lower importance on the servers so can see subscribing as a must have.

I'm going to persevere with it for a little while.....and then uninstall it :)

I'm getting really into the things that Google can do at the moment, frankly some of it is quite stunning.

I'm looking into ways to use the Google Maps API in order to try and take my "Cable Forum Map" project forward - it all looks a bit mind boggling though so it could take a while :D
