got a question

right i bought a Gigabyte GA-7ZXR rev:1.0 this is brand new never before been used i also got an AMD Athlon 1700 1.4GHZ an ATI Radeon 9250 125Mb and 384Mb SDRAM PC133 now i put it all toghther and nothing seems to work it powers up but nothing happens it doesn't go to P.O.S.T or anything

http://tw.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/...ev%201.x).htm#

here is the link to the exact product the only thing i can see what would stop it from working is the ram being 3.3v only no this i do not know if i have or not how do you find out the voltage of your ram.

or inless any of you know or think you know what my problem would be please reply i need help thanks

also i know the gfx works as i use that as we speak same with the ram so would one of the other two be faulty??

I think the notches are in a slightly different place so it would be impossible to install the dimms. :tu:

Re: got a question

how have you mounted the motherboard, stand offs or screws - if it is screws, then, imo, you should have insulating washers fitted underneath :)

McSqueal 27-06-2005 23:35

Re: got a question

yeah it all fits perfect i got a bag of screws and mountin pins and all that and used them all cos i though that might be the problem my self but it still doesnt seem to work

Re: got a question

Try using only one stick of RAM.
If the system fans start spinning when you start up but no video display then RAM is the culprit.

Check your case to mobo connections and then check your psu.

If you look at page 14 of the online manual followed from the link you will see a dip switch,I believe that if the default fsb this selects does not match your cpu then this can result in a failiure to post.try switching this over and see what happens

I don't think the RAM is the problem, on most motherboards when the fault lies with the ram or the vga then it will usually give off the beep codes, from what I have read it isn't doing this, unless we aren't being told the whole truth :)

My suggestion is to disconnect everything apart from the power and then put one bit in power on and see what happens. This is the order in which I suggest you do things:

1. Nothing apart from power to fans.
2. Insert CPU & fan and power on.
3. Insert RAM.
4. Insert VGA.
5. Start connecting drives.

Hopefully at some stage something might start working or you start hearing the error beeps. If sweet FA happens then it points towards being the motherboard or the CPU. If it looks like it's the motherboard try checking the bios battery as I know they can cause similar problems.

Also, if you can, try checking the CPU, RAM, VGA on another machine.

No it won't, if the RAM is giving problems it won't even beep.
I've had this problem on 2 desktop PCs and 1 server before - it's confusing until you try and boot with 1 stick.

From what I've read the dipswitch determines the speed of the CPU and the motherboard supports a max of 1.4 which he has so regardless of what it is set to it should still post but might be running at a slower speed.

Hopefully, I have placed some doubt in your mind to start you worrying about the safety of your 50p :D

If I win, I want my 50p in small unmarked denominations :D

Re: got a question

i tried the one stick but still no luck i know the ram work's i'm using it on this comp i'm on just now

as for the fsb thing i'm kinda of a noob when it comes to all that what speed should it be set to i have tried a couple i tried 100(default) and 133 both never worked.

i noticed when looking at the produuct spec it has *'s beside the numbers other than the defaunt fsb and in brackets it's got support by overclocking would i may be need to overclock?? if so how can i do it if it not even going to post screen ??

my psu also work's it is a 550w and i am using it just now

i'll have to wait till tomorrow then i'm gonna test my cpu if it work's then i will know it is the motherboard that is faulty or what i said above if it can be done

keep me posted if you come up with any other support you can give thanks

Your part right/wrong there, as if a faulty stick of memory is inserted into my motherboard (Asus A7V600-X) it will just keep beeping until you turn it off and remove the stick. I think only certain motherboards do this though.

Re: got a question

Prehaps it could just be a board/CPU incompatibility as I notice on the website the is a BIOS update for revision 3 board
Quote:

support AMD CPU up to Athlon 2200+/Duron 1.3Ghz (.18u) (for rev 3.x)
support Gigabyte Q-Flash
support HDD of size > 137G
So this may mean the the older boards do not support the faster CPU's even though it says they do (there is not test sheet on the site). You really need to test the CPU with another board and also test another lower spec CPU with your board.

:erm: Now when you say you used them ALL do you mean that you put a screw into each hole in the case?

If not check to see you did not put one or two in too many as this will cause a short :(

Re: got a question

Aye some motherboards only like a few being in not each hold having one in, you could have one contacting a solder underneath the mobo.

So seriously remove that MOBO gently to avoid damaging the solder underneath if caught.

AndrewJ 28-06-2005 22:06

Re: got a question

Underneath his mobo he has solder connections for resistors and capacitors for the running of his motherboard, if he has placed a screw or riser underneath the motherboard where there should not be one there is a chance of a contact.

That is what I am warning him about as I wrecked a motherboard once making the same mistake.

And it was only one capacitor but the whole mobo was wrecked.

did you fit the fibre washers between the mounting nuts & the mobo, before fitting the screws - and I agreed about not fitting too many mounting nuts to the case , as well, Saxodriver & Rough.D :)

hey i have tested the cpu on my friends mobo and it work's fine didn't seem to be a problem went to post and loaded windows fine.. but i'll try and take some of they mountin pins out but i only put them where there was a hole on the mobo for fitting the screws tho but i'll take a couple out and see how it goes also i got these little red rings look like they paper like i have been putting them under the mobo! should they be above??

zing_deleted 29-06-2005 00:02

Re: got a question

do you dare try to boot it out of the pc? place mobo on something safe ie mobo box, have ram cpu +fan plus gfx installed then just jump the power on pins with a screwdriver,if it posts this way it would be a grounding on the case.Have you tryed a different psu? there does appear to be the chance your mobo is fubared, lets hope not

What little red rings, I have a concern they was just packaging, have you tried without.

Although i agree with zinglebarbs post try booting it out of the tower.

in the bag of screws and pins there were these little red rings no wider than a screw head and i have placed them under the mobo on top of the mountin pins

that's good - the only thing that can go wrong is they fall off when introducing the motherboard. I found it helped to put matchsticks in the mounting pins, fit the washers over the matchsticks, introduce the motherboard & then take each matchstick out, in turn, as you fit each screw. :)
