You might want a domain name too *cough* *cough*

:)

Re: ftp web site space

a co.uk domain & basic hosting with 100MB of space would cost about £15 a year - cheap enough?

- much better than a free site, in my opinion :)

Ummmmm

Cable Forum don't do web hosting, you might be getting confused with I-web solutions, who provide the hosting for the forum and also for a number of the members here.

They do special deals for CF members, I'm sure someone will post the link soon.

the 'address' you refer to is the domain name - along the lines of 'sheridan.co.uk', you won't be able to use the 'homepage.ntlworld.com' address any more, and will need to purchase one. The link in Mr_love_monkeys sig is a good indicator of pricing - the .info option is cheap as chips, especially.

hi, I didn't realise you already had a domain name that presumably is set to redirect to the space hosted by NTL.

the key here is whether you can get the existing DNS entry for that name to point to your new webspace - that will depend on the facilities offered by the company you registered the name with, some charge for it, for example.

the email from I-Web will have their nameserver details incuded.

sheridan 26-06-2005 20:09

Re: ftp web site space

god knows how you upload to the new web space

cant seem to find an upload folder.

or FTP folder ,don't know where to start,
waste of £10 ,

Re: ftp web site space

Any questions you have can be answered here:

http://forum.i-websolutions.co.uk/

I think you may need to register though.

You should have a folder called public_html, I think you need to upload your site to that directory. Hopefully someone will be along soon who can confirm that though.
__________________

There isn't a specific folder called "upload" or "ftp", if you use the link:

http://www.i-websolutions.co.uk/faqs...ng%20Questions

You can see the settings that you need for your ftp program though.

KingPhoenix 26-06-2005 21:15

Re: ftp web site space

Sheridan,

You cannot use a redirecting domain name, you must use a primary domain name. i-web can offer you a hosted domain name such as

sheridan.i-webhosted.co.uk as we do with some others.

The details to use your account would of been sent as soon as your domain name resolves to the server, however as your domain name will never resolve to the server as its a redirecting domain, you would never of recieved these instructions. I suggest you visit http://support.i-websolutions.co.uk and create a support ticket for this issue.

nooo, not a waste, as KingPhoenix says, raise a support ticket - they will look after you.

What has happened is that they have allocated space on their server for your hosted account, but it currently is not associated with a domain name.

Once you realise what you have actually purchased for that 'wasted' tenner, you will be a lot happier :)

KingPhoenix 26-06-2005 21:31

Re: ftp web site space

I believe sheridan has a support ticket running, he has purchased a domain, and now just needs to contact the registrar to change the nameserver settings. The server has been configured accordingly for his new domain name.

Not used the software that you're using.

I would suspect that you won't have any problems, in theory you just need to give it the FTP address for your I-web site and it should upload as normal.

If you get any problems the guys at I-web are really good and will help where they can, alternatively I'm sure someone here will be able to steer you right :tu:

no, but I don't think you will have any problems. Uploading to your public_html folder, like Raistlin said, should be ok.

bear in mind your new domain name may take a couple of days to 'kick in', properly, however, as you have seen, there is ample support :)

You'd just need to buy some space, point your existing domain name to it, & upload your site.

Have a look at the I-Web link posted earlier in the thread. Very cheap, lots of features, & their support & customer services are excellent.

From the link that I've posted twice now:

http://www.i-websolutions.co.uk/faqs...ategory_id=3#8

Quote:

First of all you will need an FTP client. We recommend
WS_FTP, but almost any FTP client will be sufficient.
Your FTP login details will have been sent to you when you
signed up for your account. You can submit a support ticket,
in the members center,to have these details re-emailed to
yourselves. The details normally look like

Server : mydomain.com
username : myadminname
password : thepasswordichose
You need to use your FTP software to upload your files to the public_html folder.

Re: ftp web site space

when you were uploading to your ntlworld space did you type-
ftp://upload.ntlworld.com or upload.ntlworld.com ?

You will either need to include the ftp:// or not with your i-web account the same as you did with the ntlworld space. You will find a folder named public_html on your webspace- and this is where you need to put the documents that you wish to be public (ie the htm/ html files and images etc)

I think the software is asking for the absolute path to the specific folder for the upload.

Would it be something like mydomainname.com/public_html/ ?

I'm thinking that it might be easier to just use this software for the creation of the site and then use something like FileZilla for the actual upload.....

If you go to the Control Panel for your web hosting, and then click on the file manager option you will probably find that your files have just been uploaded to totally the wrong place on the server.....

You should be able to see where they are, and then use the control panel's File Manager to put them in the right place (public_html).

Sheridan,

Ok, here goes

Ftp address : 66.199.245.98
Username : Username as per your welcome mail
Password : Password as per your welcome mail

Put your files into the public_html directory... You will see this once you have connected your FTP client.

You are currently using the wrong password (i have removed a block on your IP) Please make sure your FTP password is correct before you attempt to upload again.

I don't think Sheridan is using an ftp client as such, it seems to be a site creation tool.

Not sure if it will allow him to choose a directory, he may need to specify one explicitly.

If that's the case would it be:

IPADDRESS/public_html/

?

sheridan 27-06-2005 16:34

Re: ftp web site space

yes its a site creation tool .

Raistlin 27-06-2005 16:37

Re: ftp web site space

Sheridan, if your tool allows you to just save the files and upload them later you might finder it easier to use a dedicated tool to upload them.

That way you can specify the exact directory that they should be uploaded to, usually using a file manager style graphical interface.

Something like FileZilla would do the trick nicely. As it's a more widely used application we would be able to offer better support as well, to be honest though it's fairly point and click (if I can use it anybody can :) ).

What was the first page of your old site called?

Re: ftp web site space

Raistlin 27-06-2005 16:56

Re: ftp web site space

And that's the problem.

Your main page on your original site was called f10000.html

It's currently in the /_sgg/ directory.

Go to that directory, using your web browser, and click on that file. You'll find that your image locations are borked as well (they're not loading).
__________________

For example, the big picture of you on the front page is looking for:

http://www.oldgit1.co.uk/userfiles/oldgit1.jpg

but it won't find it because the /userfiles/ directory doesn't appear in your site structure.

thought me a lesson though ..

thanks for all your help anyway chaps ..very much appreciated

SMHarman 27-06-2005 17:05

Re: ftp web site space

No it's not a no goer, but you need to get the locations of files properly sorted.

Raistlin 27-06-2005 17:06

Re: ftp web site space

Ummm..... Not necessarily a "no goer", the problem seems to be the way that your software is naming your site files and then the way that it uploads them.

Without going right back to basics and changing all the references on the different pages I'm not sure how to go about fixing it though.

I'm also not sure that if you did that you would get any benefit from it unless you ditched the software you are using at the moment or found a way to make it upload things "properly".

It's not a big site, so if you want me to take a look at straightening it out for you I'm happy to give it a go. Not sure how long it will take though..... It would also be reliant on you uploading the finished pages yourself once it was done, obviously I won't have access to your username/password.

KingPhoenix 27-06-2005 17:18

Re: ftp web site space

I can see all the files in the root directory, would you like me to move them into the correct place for you?

The only issue that will occur, is when you want to update your website your updates wont work, as the files wont be in the right place.

Re: ftp web site space

KP,

It looks like the files are all within the right directory, there just isn't an index file (unless I'm missing something), also the image links point to a directory structure that doesn't exist (a directory called "userfiles").

Like I say, I might have missed something, you've got more sight of the situation than I have.

KingPhoenix 27-06-2005 17:26

Re: ftp web site space

Did you point Filezilla at the public_html directory?

If not it will probably just be uploading to the root directory.

It might be as well to let KP sort the files out and put them where they should be, he seems to be able to see them ok from his end. That would save any more accidents and there's a good chance that things would work ok.

sheridan 27-06-2005 17:35

Re: ftp web site space

what do i put in the address bar in filezilla then

is it oldgit1.co.uk/puplic-html

Raistlin 27-06-2005 17:37

Re: ftp web site space

You need to connect to the oldgit.co.uk address, using the username and password you were supplied with.

Filezilla should then give you a view of the directory contents of the site.

You need to navigate to the public_html folder and then upload your files to there. Your index file needs to be at the root of that folder.

It's not the easiest thing in the world to explain really, once you've done it once and seen how it works (and how it looks when it's done) you will see how easy it really is.

sheridan 27-06-2005 17:42

Re: ftp web site space

there is a file there now in the public_html called incoming ..

does that mean it uploading ?:)

very slow it seems ..

Raistlin 27-06-2005 17:45

Re: ftp web site space

It is quite a slow process, you are uploading a whole lot of information.

You will probably find that it was quicker with your old software because it was only uploading the updates. This time you are putting everything up there.

Give it time and when it's finished we'll see how we got on ;)

Once you've worked out what went wrong this time, and you know why, you should be in a better position to do it straight away next time.

I had similar problems working out what went where when I first got my hosting, I think I've got a reasonable grasp of it now though. It just takes a little time to get sorted, once it's working you'll see...

Re: ftp web site space

Wouldn't have thought it would take this long.....depends on how big the files are though.

Some of those images might be quite large but they shouldn't be that big.....

Down at the bottom of the filezilla screen it should tell you what files it is working on and what percentage is complete. Does that tell you anything at all?

Re: ftp web site space

Sounds like something's note quite right there, it's difficult to tell without seeing exactly what you're seeing though.

You should see progress bars underneath the files that are being uplaoded.

What's the total size of the directory you are trying to upload?

sheridan 27-06-2005 18:38

Re: ftp web site space

well i my old site it was abou 35 mb or so .

Raistlin 27-06-2005 18:45

Re: ftp web site space

Ok, I think we need to wait for KP to take a look and see if he can move the files that you've uploaded already to where they should be.

At the very least he can restore the directory structure to what it should be so that we have a blank canvas.

I think the problem here is things have got so confused that we don't have a common starting point/frame of reference.

Once the online directory structure is sorted/straightened it should be possible to talk you through the upload a step at a time. I'll open up Filezailla on my machine and walk you through each step of the process, in theory we should both see the same screens (albeit I won't be able to see your directories/files but that shouldn't be a problem).

Once you've done it once you should be able to repeat the process.

I need to go out now though so it will have to be tomorrow night / later tonight.

There is one other alternative, but that would rely on KP sorting the structure of the site first, and then you getting someone else to upload the files for you. Not a great solution as they would need your password and you would still need to get the files to them.

I'll check back a bit later and see if there have been any developments.

I honestly think that if you can get this cracked you will see that it's money well spent :tu: :)

yahoo :D :D :D take a look at the domain name ..i think it has worked ..

was it me or did KP do it ,,

i just uploaded again on my sgw program and put the hyphen at the bottom
this time public_ not - can it be that simple ..
please say i did it :)

Raistlin 27-06-2005 18:52

Re: ftp web site space

Not sure that you will have been able to upload 35Mb of files that quickly but it seems likely that you have.....or that KP has sorted it.

Putting the hyphen at the bottom will certainly make a difference.

The name of the folder is public_html not public-html (the first one uses an under-score, the second uses a hyphen).

I would wait and see if KP posts back to say that he sorted it, we may still need to talk you through the upload process for any files that you create from new or amend in the future.

Good going though, told you we'd get there in the end :)

One thing, Sheridan - you wouldn't have got the level of support that KingPhoenix has offered, with just any hosting company, it is one reason why many of us have no hesitation in recommending I-Web.

I've just put an index.html in my public_html directory and it's not working. Is this because my site hasn't propagated yet?

http://66.199.245.98

Also - I'm trying to get dreamweaver to access the site remotely, but I'm not entirely sure what to put in the boxes? Sorry for the newbie q's - I've only used ntl's web space before. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong and could do with some help.

Cheers in advance for looking - Dilli :)

To view your site with an ip address it will have to be a dedicated ip or you will need to use the format like this
http://66.199.245.98/~username

Thanks :)

I tried replacing username with dilligaf1701 and it still doesn't work.

It's probably me to be honest. :(

Cheers anyway - Dilli.

AFAIK, the I-Web Linux boxes have had their temp server address disabled.

You reg'd for your hosting today so your domain will be ordered today also, normally, ...so give the registration upto 48 hours to propogate to the Linux server that you are on. :)
