Latest NTL special offers - useful when renegotiaing after contract is up

Hi could we possibly have a thread for listing details of NTL offers. Obviously this will be useful for new customers and for existing ones wishing to renegiatiate after theri 12 month contract is up.

Best if people only post nationwide offers - eg ones you see online

Here are some i am aware of:

1. Three for £30 (1 meg BB, base pack and phone line)

2. Free off peak calls when you take the basic phoneline PLUS 1 meg BB for only £9.99

3. Free talk unlimted 24 whne you take the base pack

here are the details:

http://www.home.ntl.com/page/12months

http://www.home.ntl.com/page/bundle2

http://www.home.ntl.com/page/3for30

also found this though don't know if it is current:

I've found that NTL will generally put you on one of these if you agree to another 12 month tie in.

I've currently got the free telephone line (bundle 1) for a year (with BB and CATV). I was advised I would need to keep BB or CATV for 12 months from the point we negotiated this.

Do you think I would have a chance of getting the Last Bundle you have on your post, I am coming up to the end of my broadband contract, literally less than a few weeks to go.

I would be willing to stay with the broadband for 12 months if I could get that offer

Ring up CS and tell them you want to cancel your contract when it reaches 12 months as you feel you aren't getting the best deal for your money. The odds are you will end up speaking to retentions who may try to change your mind.

Did they insist you enter a new 12 month contract?

Just to mention my dad :)

He called NTL this morning and asked them if there was any discounts he could have for being a long term customer. They are letting him have the base pack tv free for 12months.

edit - and yes he did have to enter into another 12 month contract.

Re: Latest NTL special offers - useful when renegotiaing after contract is up

No, it was a rolling contract.

But I have agreed to it and decided to get the Cable TV and Telephone now (12 month contract) but at least I can cancel the broadband at anytime.

Its amazing once NTL speak to you and negiotate NTL deals are very very competitive, i.e. Sky TV £19.50 plus BT line plus broadband for a similar price.

Thanks NOONOO, I just called CS and spoke to a very helpful lady (thanks Nicola) who has reduced my bill by £11 per month for 12 months, the same as the bundle 2 offer for talk 24 users. I did not need to take out a new contract and am still free to cancel anytime.

To be honest I was not expecting this response from NTL and for once they have exceeded my expectations.

Just spoke to NTL retentions department and spoke to someone called Luther. Offered me deal where i get free phone line rental and a loyalty bonus of £8.50 per month. Saving me a total of £19 per month.

I asked at least 3 times if i was entering a new 12 month contract and he confirmed on all 3 occasions that i wasnt and that i could cancel at anytime i wanted.

I wouldn't advice people to just call to try and squeeze what they can from NTL, in my honest opinion i felt there was better value for money elsewhere, NTL agreed and give me a package which I was happy with.

I rang with the intention of leaving NTL to go to Sky but the guy i spoke to came up with an offer which was too good for me to say no to. Plus im not tied into a 12 month contract.

Think you have to be cheeky and say "how come all these newbies are getting allsorts of concessions and loyal customers get nothing" then add "$ky and BT sounds good". ;)

To be honest (& no offence to you personally here), 'Nicola' (or at least here boss) needs to be severely reprimanded/sacked IMO.

That is just stupid, & part of the reason that ntl suffers so much financially. :tu:

I'm all in favour of customer retention, but the customer has to flex too, & tying them down to a new 12 month contract would make sound business practice-if the customer doesn't like that then he/she still has to go elsewhere to a new provider & sign a new 12 month contract anyway, so ntl should insist on a new 12 month contract in return for any discounts applied.

I agree with Neil, I got broadband half price while I continue to use them, not fixed to a contract, but at the end of the day that was the reason why i decided to go with NTL for cable and phone via a package offered to all customers.

Retentions is their for people who are really considering moving not to try and get cheaper services.

If you look at my post history I had asked about alternatives and had serious thoughts of changing suppliers because I could get more for my money elsewhere, now NTL can match it I am a happy customer

Except ntl didn't 'match' what you could get elsewhere because they didn't insist on a 12 month contract. ;)

ntl only have themselves to blame for all their issues, they really do.

Neil the fact is I have just signed up to an NTL Phone and NTL Cable TV package which is for a 12 month contract, while my broadband can be cancelled at anytime, the logic for NTL is the fact the chances of my cancelling my broadband would be slim.
__________________

Neil to be honest if NTL became more price competitive then they would have a lot a hell more of broadband customers, TV and Telephony customers.

BT offer the same telephone packages as NTL (it could be argued that BT provide better call cost, international costs, and better customer services)

Sky offer a £19.50 package as do NTL, although SKY is arguably better, more for your money, better customer services, better interactive options etc.

Broadband - ADSL and LLU exchanges have squeezed prices, for example UKOnline 8Mb for the £2.00 more than NTL 3Mb Service

Yes you need a telephone line, but for someone like me who wanted one anyway.
__________________

i.e. NTL Phone, NTL Family Pack and 3Mb Broadband. Cost = 67.99

vs

BT Phone, Sky £19.50 Pack and 8Mb Brodband. Cost = 69.99

For £2.00 more you get more for your money, i.e. cheaper calls, more sky channels, faster broadband.

Better customer services

I agree NTL could do a loyalty package but members shouldn't just try to screw them down trying to get what they can. The loyalty package should be for those who have stayed for like 5+ yrs and perhaps payed ontime or if there was a large problem at least arranged payments and kept to them.

I know some who feel they deserve a loyalty package as they are comingto the end of their first year and been disconnected a few times for none payment. This package if ever it happened should be a reward not a right.

A loyality package maybe, but seriously if you think about it NTL are no longer price competitive, I understand they have financial difficulties, the only way of resolving them is to generate a larger customer base.

I have used NTL since their free dialup was introduced, had telephone etc, but because I became a student I had never lived in one location longer than a year for around 4 years, 2 of them i was in a non-ntl area.

However, as mentioned I do not agree with people just ringing for the hell of it to see what they can get out of it

I agree but not 5 years, now days I think average retention is probably under 2 years the way companies are going out marketing themselves, they could maybe start a loyalty discount for 18 months onwards and have it slowly increase up to a maximum after 5 years, or even take it further and have a scheme similiar to car insurance no claims, where as if you have no uneeded engineer callouts you maintain your discount.

Neil you are absolutly right, if a discount is given by retentions then their should be a tie in linked to the discount, so if the customer leaves they then have to pay a penalty for leaving after the discount was given. Maybe their is a tag on my account that they know I tried before to get a discount and I dont get put through to retentions who knows, I have been giving the direct # a couple of times but havent ring it due to not been that desperate for the discount, rather then a price decrease I would like to see a better service.

This is actually how most companies in this country work. Look at the amount of special deals thrown at new Pay as you go customers on all mobile phone networks. I am a contract customer on T-mobile, and while I have a heavily subsidised phone, I do get a bit p'd off that new customers get thrown free minutes and free texts left right and centre.

One mobile phone company has broke the trend tho, I cant remember which one it is, I think it works that all current customers entitled to same deals as new customers but they have to claim it rather then auto get the deal, so they probably figured most wont bother but the ones who do will stay happy rather then leave to another provider.

Orange also offer matching contracts to those offered by the other three majors.
My conversation with retentions resulted in a new 12 month tie in and was a issue specifically to my favourite gripe - I pay for an NTL phone line because I have to, yet I dont use it.

Just spoke to ntl and they are cutting my bill by a whopping £34.99 a month,
Giving me free 2mb b/b for year+talk24 for £14.50 a month,

So saving£ 299 per with b/b
+
£120 per year with talk24 so total yearly saving of£419. 00 well chuffed with that.

Rung accounts department to confirm everything and all is set up on next months bill

One could argue that if the customer was happy in the 1st place with the service/product, then they wouldn't need/want any form of discount.

If NTL do keep bribing people to stay on (as it sounds like they are doing), they will have a reduced income with which to improve services.

I'm not talking about those that have had bad service (although I have to say, I'm not so cheap as to accept shoddy goods/services for less money, I'd personally go elsewhere and pay the full price for a better service/goods  )

I was pleased when I got a speed increase but because I didn't want to change my STB I am now on a faster speed for £7 a month less so I wont be greedy and try to screw them for more

I feel bereft :) all these people ringing up to moan and I've just stayed the same since I started on my own with NTL about 6 years ago. I think I get the best deal in any case, so to be honest I don't care about talk 24 becasue it would make my bill bigger as I have the family pack.

I don't mind paying for Broadband because I use it and I think 3mb at £38 is pretty reasonable. I may complain if it went up to £40 but then I have the option of droping my television and just having a base pack to save money. So no I won't be phoning asking for new deals just because.

I'm absolutely not disagreeing with you.

I do feel that if any discounts are offered (to prevent to move to ADSL for example), then ntl should insist on a 12 month contract.

I still believe that ntl only have themselves to blame for not putting a proper structure/procedure in place when it comes to 'retention' offers.

Re: Latest NTL special offers - useful when renegotiaing after contract is up

Referance my discounts that i have been offered all i asked was is there anything that could be done to reduce the bill?even contemplated reducing the b/b to a slower speed but didn't have chance as the chap on the phone staright away without hesitattion said b/b free for a year and your telephone what can we do?knock the line rental on the head that was it the offer was there from what i said,i even asked about having the tv put back on as my 12mth contract with sky is up and he wasn't bothered about putting the tv on which would of meant me paying more to ntl but then would of had the tv.
In my opinion yes some cases are get what i can out of ntl but on the other side of the coin the staff are throwing all sorts of offers at people and there just toog ood to say no to,surley there limited to the ampunt they can give away or been authorised from management above to give these deals away, and financial sides of things must surley of been looked into for these offers to be given in the first place.
Just my opinion

A customer on a discount tied into a new 12 months defeintly is better for a company then no customer at all even if its at a loss, but the problem here is as already stated the tie in isnt been added and people are ringing up for the sake of it due to word getting out that NTL are struggling with customer turnover hence making it easy with retentions.

I'd just like to say thanks to the Cable Forum Team for all the hard work and effort that they have put into establishing a good working relationship with the NTL heirarchy.

I'm sure that all of the good, positive, things that come out of that relationship will be of enormous benefit to CF members and NTL customers.

I'm glad to see, as well, that we are seeing a number of instances of excellent customer services being reported here on the site. This should go some way to showing NTL that we don't just damn them when we get it wrong, we also recognise and acknowledge when they get it right. It would be terrible if, after all of the hard work that the team have put in, NTL were to get the impression that this site is nothing but a refuge for people wanting to moan about NTL and share new and exciting ways to get one over on them.

<Edit: Oh deary me, did I post that in the wrong thread? ;) >

Indeed.

12mth contract ends with {enter mobile network here}. You phone them up, tell them that 3/Three are offering x minutes and x texts for £x.xx a month. You tell them you're thinking of moving over and would like a PAC code.
{enter mobile network here} says "oh, we'd like to offer you x minutes with x texts for £x.xx a month too..." or "we cant match that, but we can offer you y minutes with x texts for £y.xx a month".
Customer says "Oh, OK then, I'll accept that" and agree to another 12mth contract.

If companies like these do that, WHY DON'T NTL?!

Fair enough, offer people half price tv for 3mths, after 3mths, they'll try again or go elsewhere.

Re: Latest NTL special offers - useful when renegotiaing after contract is up

Well I'm glad my thread has proved to be so popular and that people are calling to try to get similar deals to new customers. Seems orangebird is getting kinda annoyed too which is always a bonus. :D

No one is forcing NTL to offer these deals to people - NTL are a business and people are entitled to negotiate better terms if they aren't happy about constant prices rises and poor products/service.

Back in the early days of Cable and Wireless there was no need to phone up and negotiate better deals - they were such good value for many things that you'd probably have been laughed at for even considering it. In fact I even remeber when NTL gave me free dial up for a year or so and free digital TV - that was such good value that I would have been insane to go elsewhere or even to hint at such a thing.
\
The fact is that if NTL didn't keep giving me the occasional discount I'd have left several years ago. I cancelled the base pack a year or two ago and only kept the thing whilst NTL offered it free of charge or for next to nothing - it simply wasn't worth playing more than a couple of quid a month for to me. Freeview is far better value and gets better by the day.

NTL still don't offer caller ID here (or to many others) and it feels as if I need it more than ever right now. On top of that they've put the line rental up and capped broadband and even started using annoying Indian call centers who makes the UK ones actually look quite decent. Therefore I mention such problems every 12 months or so and rather than fixing these problems like most normal companies would do they prefer to offer discounts instead.

If NTL want more money they should offer the services people actually want. I'd happily give them more cash if they offered fully featured services and wouldn't have to threaten to go elsewhere if they didn't threaten NTL's low end broadband customers with stingy caps.

I DO agree that special deals should be subject to a 12 month contract, but if NTL are too stupid to insit on this then who cares. NTL's customer service is still fairly poor, the products still aren't quite up to standard and in many areas they are becoming poor value for money compared to the competition - eg E4 is now on Freeview, ridiculously cheap phones calls are at 1899.com (despite NTL' best efforts), skype.com etc

NTL have little choice than to offer discounts IMO

Do you think it might have something to do with the fact, particularly in my case i got half price broadband on a rolling contract, who is going to find 3mb broadband or equivalent for £17.50 a month.

Besides, I think I had a valid claim since I was legitimately thinking of moving over to BT (Phone), UKOnline (Broadband), Sky (TV)

Anyway I opted to go for NTLs Talk 24 Unlimited with Digital for £25.00 and the likely hood of me moving is like 0 unless telewest install in my area which isn't going to happen.

Re: Latest NTL special offers - useful when renegotiaing after contract is up

Bit of a catch-22 - NTL services are felt by some to be poor, so people look for discounts to match the service actually received which means NTL have less money which means they can't improve the services (or pay their staff a good salary), so those people continue to see the services as poor.

But anyway, if someone has all the cables etc already installed (at least for TV/broadband) isn't the monthly rental almost pure profit? I've not had a problem for years that has required NTL to do anything to fix. I have the same cable box and modem. So for me (ignoring the initial cabling costs!), my payments are almost pure profit to NTL (other than to pay the billing system charges). So I can understand why NTL might be willing to give customers half price deals to retain at least 50% of that profit. I can't see they make a loss on those deals. They would make a loss if the customer went elsewhere or if a large number of people were given the 50% deals. But then it would be their own fault for offering the deals to all those people.

If NTL believe their standard pricing deals are good value and give their customers the best service amongst their competitors, then perhaps they should just have a bit of courage and let people go if they say they can find a better deal elsewhere. If NTL really do have the best deals they will soon attract someone new to replace them.

As I said in my OP in this thread, I complained as I am happy with the BB and happy to pay retail for it (though I don't use NTL mail or web services and the free newsgrous are still pants but I don't have time for that at the moment) and happy with the DTV, my biggest problem was / is that NTL cannot take over my BT ISDN numbers and I HAD TO PAY FOR A PHONE LINE, even though it sits in the corner doing nothing.

NTL gave me the phone line for free for a year, considering it is not used and last time I tried to use it there was a fault on the line I consider this a reasonable retention. If NTL want to offer ISDN then I can port my numbers and will pay full price again.

NTL are not the only ones who will and need to pay the retentions game. My neighbour decided he wasn't getting money out of his Sky contract (Sports + Films) so phoned to cancel and was offered the same package at half-price for a year (costs around about £18 now I think). I doubt Sky are doing that to loose money either.

NTL need the money to improve their services, otherwise people will continue to have problems.

However... people have a right to haggle for the best deal. The levering point on haggling is the threat of going elsewhere. If you are genuinely going to go elsewhere, then haggle away.
But if you're just after a good deal and would not go elsewhere if NTL said "no, you'll pay the proper going rate", then you're not being fair to the whole user community.

May be worth calling some people's bluff when they try such things... see if they're aware of what they're being offered elsewhere and are not just trying to get a cheaper bill at the end of the month.

Its the empty threats that are the problem here, not people looking around to see if the grass could be greener and NTL offering them a package to stay a while longer.

But NTL do need to get some sort of contract incurred when people accept these special offers, otherwise they're gonna continually be taken for a ride by freeloaders.

Maybe if NTL went bust they'd get taken over by a decent company who charged fair prices and actually invested their money in getting the basics right. NTL invest cash in developing pointless complicated crap like video on demand, yet they still can't managed Caller ID yet. If they can't be bothered putting the network right they should just stop selling phones lines and offer a VoIP phone service with caller ID instead.

one otherthing - I don't think I even have online billing yet :td:

NTL appear to think they will profit by offering VOD. They probably will. Look at Homechoice.. Also, bear in mind NTL is not actually paying for the development and implementation of VOD. The company that provides it is. So, NTL have a greater chance of making profit.

Now, if you can show NTL they will profit by introducing Caller ID (which will cost millions as a lot of switching hardware and software will need to be upgraded), I am sure they will upgrade.

None of which detracts from the point that NTL need to spend more money giving a good service, therefore reducing the amount of cancellation bribes they give out.

I dare say NTL probably won't make much money from on-line billing (or from caller ID). But if they want to stay in business they'll have to catch up with the competition eventually.

Free itemised bills, and a competent tv service would help. The improvement in service I am waiting to see :(

On the other hand, it's the same as motor insurance companies. Discounts and advantageous prices are offered to new customers, and not existing ones. That's why it doesn't pay to stay with the same insurance company too long.
Unfortuantely, it's more difficult to switch phone/television/broadband on an annual basis - but discounts are given to New users, whilst the long estabished customers pay a higher price. Perhaps NTL, (and other companies) should take this into account when offering incentives to new customers? I do find it slightly annoying that I take out broadband, pay the full price, and then find the following year that new users get a discount.
I can honestly say that I have never had a new user incentive from NTL for any of their products - so the offer I've been given is the first one - and only fair that others have received some benefits - but I've not.

Eclipse have given their longest serving customer 10 years free 2mbit ADSL, he has been with them since 1995.

Often they will give you something, but tie you back in for another 12 months.

Re caller Id I'm fairly sure the reason ntl have not bothered to upgrade the very very expensive switching equipment is that in a few years most telephony will be VOIP. So whatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s the point in pandering to a few customers wants (was going to use needs but then who 'needs' caller ID?) and spending millions upgrading only for it to be outdated when VOIP becomes the standard. If ntl had taken over the switchââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s 10 years ago then Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢m sure things like called id would have had a different urgency attached.

Strange then that BT have included this for free for all customers now. It enables you to be more selective with your privacy....:)

Yes but BT has a different technology infrastructure meaning that putting CLID in means putting in hardware at the exchange, for NTL it means putting it in many of the green boxes out on the streets, more smaller bits of hardware, more to go wrong, more cost to install. So at the moment this is a marketing benefit to BT.

Totally, coming back from the US the relative we were staying with had Time Warner cable with Digital Telephone, this has CLID that not only sends the number, but also the phone book name of who is calling, a benefit of VoIP telephony.

who has my name? 12-10-2005 14:23

Not forgetting the fact that BT were having to upgrade an awful lot of their exhanges anyway (to digital exchanges) at the time they installed CLID, so, while it probably cost millions to install CLID, it didn't cost nearly as much as it would NTL, and the cost was dwarfed by the cost of upgrading the exchanges.
