Connection Issues
Hi all hoping someone here might be able to help me as im having no luck at all fixing this problem elsewhere.
I have a 3mb connection with ntl and im using the Ambit 200 modem, this is currently connected via usb (getting same problem using ethernet) On some occasions i connect fine with my ip address being what it should be, then on other occasions i'll get the dreaded 169.XXXXX ip and on others i'll get 192.XXXXXXX im lucky if im actually use my internet for a few hours everyday. This problem has been happening since about 2 weeks ago and ntl have told me its a problem with the dhcp on my computer not getting the right ip address. I really don't know what to do and its getting to the stage where i might have to change suplliers as i just can't afford to get a proffesional to come out and look at my pc. I do know however that when i got the cable modem about 8 months ago it never came with a broadjump cd and was just plugged in and worked, and i remember something about having to register your modem ???? Although i don't really think this could be the problem as i've had no problem with the modem for the past seven months until up to a couple of weeks ago. Any ideas or help would be gratefully appreciated. Regards Ryan |
Re: Connection Issues
Welcome to the forum :)
when did you upgrade to 3mb? Also can you give us a few details about your PC? What operating system, any firewalls running, anything like a router in use? |
Re: Connection Issues
Thanks, been 3mb for around a month and a half.
Im running with no firewalls and have disabled the windows one aswell, runing windows xp with all updates installed. No router in use just the standard modem. It is connected now and i can "just" about browse the net, but it won't let me connect and play any games. See i play a game online "Counter Strike" and have rented my own server for the game, i've got a programme i use which shows what im pinging particular server at and hass a little graph with it. Using this i can see my connection is spiking about every 5 secs. If you need to know aything else ask away :) |
Re: Connection Issues
What part of the country are you in as there has been a lot of network work carried out over the last 3 months or so.
Running without a firewall leaves your system wide open, when was the last time you ran a spyware, trojan, adware scan on your computer? |
Re: Connection Issues
I live in welwyn garden city in Hertfordshire (al7)
Ok i've just turned the firewall back on and am running adaware. Although i've been having this problem and am pretty sure my pc was spyware free as i run adaware quite often. Hadn't thought about running it again as i just formatted my pc and reloaded windows. |
Re: Connection Issues
Should always have a firewall running if you don't have a router or some form of connection protection. There are waaaay too many nasties floating around on the Internet to leave your pc opeen.
Have you tried a basic test here http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks to see if anything stands out as wrong? |
Re: Connection Issues
will do that test, what do i put down on the results page as my connect speed, im on 3meg and it wants the "Speed (advertised) kbit/s" ?
|
Re: Connection Issues
3072 I think (1024 per Mb)
|
Re: Connection Issues
Ok this is what i got on the results
http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:2aaf4d6?service=cable&speed=3072&os=winXP&vi a=normal |
Re: Connection Issues
the fact that you sometimes get a 192 ip suggests that the modem is losing sync with the network.
if you PM me the modem's mac address i'll have a look at it in work tomorrow. |
Re: Connection Issues
Have you checked your signal strengths for your connection?
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...66&postcount=1 and a basic speed test might help ensure that your connection is running at the correct levels. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html |

Re: Connection Issues
Standard ntl ambit 200 modem
|
Re: Connection Issues
Ambit 200,
there have been occassions where you have to reboot the modem for it to access the config page, have you tried that? Also check to make sure you aren't specifying a proxy in IE for the connection. Oh and is there a reason why you are using USB and not ethernet for the connection? |
Re: Connection Issues
Ok now im really confused, my ip address should start in 81.XXXX and i've always used usb so im now trying ethernet, its connect everythings REAL slow and i've got an ip starting 213.XXXXXX ????? any ideas ?
|
Re: Connection Issues
Did you power off the modem and PC before you changed connections? If not, power down the PC, power down the modem, re-start the modem, wait till it settles and then power up the PC.
|
Re: Connection Issues
An ip address starting with 213 is fine- it is one of the other ranges that ntl use :)
