Warning
Last night it was reported to us that a member was PM others asking for the MAC address of their modem, because a 'friend' required it to use ntl in the same area.
We would like to remind you, that the MAC address belongs to you and you only. The only people who would need to ask for this information is ntl themselves. Please report any further activities of this nature to the team, and we will happily deal with them. Thanks |

Re: Warning
Thank you for the warning.

Re: Warning
I do hope members are aware of the implications of giving out the MAC address of their NTL equipment to unknown people :erm: That and publishing your public IP address on the forum should always be discouraged unless you know for a fact you are giving it to a member of NTL staff or a member of the team.

Re: Warning
I get the idea from people in ntl this is a big problem that ntl ha been playing down.
I would of thought any requests by pm along these lines would be an individual acting on behalf of an organised group. |

So someone's phishing for MAC addresses?
Were they from MACPhisheries? :D oops: :Sprint: |

Then again perhaps this cloning is a different method to the one I have been told about. |
Re: Warning

Seriously though, some people must be crazy for trying something like this on a forum like this. It's always destined to fail... |

Should come in useful for NTL if it's an actual NTL IP address? |

Re: Warning
Ok - just so people know. What if this had actually happened. The said mac WAS given out I mean.
What would your best course of action be? Call NTL and tell them? Not worry about it unless something happened? |

This requires a little knowledge and downloading the datasheet for the device fitted to the modem. The reason why I mentioned areas, is I am guessing the best area to install a modem with a spoofed MAC address would be off the same ubr as the genuine one. I would of thought it would make identification of the real modem from the illegal one difficult, as it wouldn't stand out like a sore thumb. Thats why I think information on as many MAC addresses with areas as they can get would be useful. |
Re: Warning
ok guys this is the message i got from that user.
"hi i am installing broadband myself and i need the mac address from the bottom of your modem in order to set up my broadband according to my friend who says that because you live in herts and so do i please help awaiting your reply ******" |
Re: Warning
Blikin cheek if you ask me! What could you do with it if do not mind me asking?? As it is a bit of a grey area for me!!
|
Re: Warning
They use it to get free broadband - on someone elses account.
|
Re: Warning
the cheeky blighters! I will keep my eye open!
|
Re: Warning
but how would they be able to change the mac tho cos if u go on to 192.168 100.1 there is no option to change it
|
Re: Warning
because their clever and there will be a way around it!

There are ways to do it. But they will not be discussed here, by the way :) |
Re: Warning
I didn't get the pm so I guess I am lucky. I am glad to see that it was acted on right away and the member was banned :tu:
|
Re: Warning
Didn't the MAC address used to be stored in your profile, many moons ago?
|
Re: Warning
IIRC that was on .com and only visible the team and the CLT...
|
Re: Warning
If there using a cloned modem there is a chance they will reclone this and try again,Also chances are the ip address stored will be from a cloned modem so the suspect will not be tracable this was.
Would ntl know if 2 modems with the same mac were trying to access the net at the same time? would ntl block both? |
Re: Warning
Thanks for the warning.
Those people are plain and simple thieves. Its good they have been banned. |

:D :D , i wonder how much hdd space it would take to store all that info , and as you do not need to have your phoneline connected after a year , how would they collect the info ;) :D :D :D |

The most sky would be able to do is monitor which box is set to what channel (as the box has no way of detecting who is watching it). They would possibly require hundreds of gigabytes to store all this info, but with 250 gigs drive available for around £100 nowdays, the storage is feasable. They would have no way of collecting the info if the box is not connected to the phone though. NTL is a different matter. They could collect the info. It's doubtful it would be worth the effort and cost though. Put bluntly, apart from getting rough ideas of viewing figures for advertising purposes, I don't see that any TV company would have any interest in what we watch. |
Re: Warning
On the subject of data collection, if ntl collect data on people's shopping habits online, whats to say they are would/not on the tv service.

If they are putting noise back on the network, its a faulty digi box and not the fact they have been chipped. I think you are reffering to the "cube" thats use was widespread on GI boxes, that put a spike at 20megs on to the network. Now the digi boxes can reset themselves, so even the "hits" to disable them don't work! It would help if NTL, firstly, tightened up the stores process, and secondly, picked up dico'ed boxes :dunce: I should know, after all,i've only been with ntl for 12 years. :Yikes: |
Re: Warning

I agree the best way NTL could stop this is to pick up boxes....if people can't get hold of boxes then they can't chip them |
Re: Warning
OK so what do we know.
1) there was someone asking for MAC addresses here, they have been banned and we have been warned about it, so that's the end of that. 2) Using a MAC address can enable someone to clone your modem & get free broadband from NTL. 3) The rest seems to be developing into a you can't/you can discussion. He says you can't, he says you can. I know how to do it & without detection as the information is available, don't mean I am doing though nor would I tell anyone (they can find out for themselves) but do we really need to keep discussing it all. |
