Warning

Last night it was reported to us that a member was PM others asking for the MAC address of their modem, because a 'friend' required it to use ntl in the same area.

We would like to remind you, that the MAC address belongs to you and you only. The only people who would need to ask for this information is ntl themselves.

Please report any further activities of this nature to the team, and we will happily deal with them.

Thanks

I do hope members are aware of the implications of giving out the MAC address of their NTL equipment to unknown people :erm: That and publishing your public IP address on the forum should always be discouraged unless you know for a fact you are giving it to a member of NTL staff or a member of the team.

Re: Warning

I get the idea from people in ntl this is a big problem that ntl ha been playing down.

I would of thought any requests by pm along these lines would be an individual acting on behalf of an organised group.

I very much doubt there's any organisation involved, far easier ways of doing this than asking on a forum.

I would of thought the ones with "knowledge" would find it useful to have known official mac addresses for areas, or I guess the member asking may of been asking another member in his/her area.

Then again perhaps this cloning is a different method to the one I have been told about.

It's even funnier when you think that all IP addresses are logged and you have to use a valid email address to join the forum ;)

hadn't thought of the email lol, but aye... I know the IPs are logged

Should come in useful for NTL if it's an actual NTL IP address?

Mac addresses are unique to the equipment and not a particular area. They identify that piece of equipment, the manufacturer, model No, etc. When NTL receive a batch of new modems they each have their own unique mac address and could end up in any part of the country. I have had batches of equipment arrive with mac addresses all being quite different from one another, not sequential numbering.

Re: Warning

Ok - just so people know. What if this had actually happened. The said mac WAS given out I mean.

What would your best course of action be? Call NTL and tell them? Not worry about it unless something happened?

I am well aware of that, I also know how easy it is with some ethernet processor IC's to simply change the MAC address to anything you want.
This requires a little knowledge and downloading the datasheet for the device fitted to the modem.

The reason why I mentioned areas, is I am guessing the best area to install a modem with a spoofed MAC address would be off the same ubr as the genuine one. I would of thought it would make identification of the real modem from the illegal one difficult, as it wouldn't stand out like a sore thumb.

Thats why I think information on as many MAC addresses with areas as they can get would be useful.

I'm sure there are plenty of ways to do it - but probably best not to mention it on here ;)

If there using a cloned modem there is a chance they will reclone this and try again,Also chances are the ip address stored will be from a cloned modem so the suspect will not be tracable this was.
Would ntl know if 2 modems with the same mac were trying to access the net at the same time? would ntl block both?

can't say too much about how it is all done... but yes ntl can detect and trace cloned modems and take appropriate action :)

You carnt detect all the people who have cut the return path in their box!;) Nor can you detect all the cloned smartcards and people using those rubbishy "free PPV £30 credit" return path filters on ebay.

Hopefully the new VOD software will put a stop to it, but knowing ntl its doubtfull.

Actually,we can.but it's manpower heavy. One of the ways is noise put on the network by the chipped box,we fit a noise blocker at the tap. Also,we can also tell if a box is non responsive (no return path) and what channel someone is watching. After all,i've only been with ntl for 7 years.

Depends.. It would take a few bytes of storage per channel change per user. However, there would be billions (if not tens of billions) of changes per year (think of how many times you change channel each day, then multiply that by 365 and the number of subscribers sky have).

The most sky would be able to do is monitor which box is set to what channel (as the box has no way of detecting who is watching it). They would possibly require hundreds of gigabytes to store all this info, but with 250 gigs drive available for around £100 nowdays, the storage is feasable.

They would have no way of collecting the info if the box is not connected to the phone though. NTL is a different matter. They could collect the info.

It's doubtful it would be worth the effort and cost though. Put bluntly, apart from getting rough ideas of viewing figures for advertising purposes, I don't see that any TV company would have any interest in what we watch.

Sorry, but ya wrong! You cannot detect chipped boxes...period
If they are putting noise back on the network, its a faulty digi box and not the fact they have been chipped. I think you are reffering to the "cube" thats use was widespread on GI boxes, that put a spike at 20megs on to the network.
Now the digi boxes can reset themselves, so even the "hits" to disable them don't work!
It would help if NTL, firstly, tightened up the stores process, and secondly, picked up dico'ed boxes :dunce:

I should know, after all,i've only been with ntl for 12 years. :Yikes:

I agree the best way NTL could stop this is to pick up boxes....if people can't get hold of boxes then they can't chip them

Re: Warning

OK so what do we know.

1) there was someone asking for MAC addresses here, they have been banned and we have been warned about it, so that's the end of that.

2) Using a MAC address can enable someone to clone your modem & get free broadband from NTL.

3) The rest seems to be developing into a you can't/you can discussion.

He says you can't, he says you can.
I know how to do it & without detection as the information is available, don't mean I am doing though nor would I tell anyone (they can find out for themselves) but do we really need to keep discussing it all.
