Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizzas Around

I'm thinking of taking the CompTia A+ exams - two of them. I decided against doing the course and have bought a (thick) book instead, which has test exams on a CD. It's a comprehensive book. I sailed through the OS exam but failed the Core (hardware) exam - 78%. I need around another 10%. I need to somehow remember all the various CPUs, their speeds, caches and connection methods (Slot 1, Socket 8...); connectors and cabling (e.g. the yellow wire on a molex is what voltage?); typical DMA, IRQ and I/O addressing; and finally, networking standards - e.g. distances between devices on a hub.

Anyone any useful suggestions on how I might remember this lot :erm: Maybe memory aids or mnemonics? Or is it a case of decorating the house with post-it notes?

i always write down the info i need to remember, then keep condensing it and trying to write it down again from memory. using the info practically always helps me to remember, but m not sure how applicable that is in this case!

Perhaps you can find something useful here:

http://www.bucks.edu/~specpop/mnemonics.htm

The Acrostic technique looks like it might be useful.

That's the trouble - I had my first computer aged around 8 and since then I've never needed to know that the red wire on a molex is 5V. Can't see me ever needing to know, but that's exams - test what you know about stuff that you'll never use :D I've wrote everything down but the I/O map is just :disturbd:

Yes - I've been looking at the info at trying to find possible ways of remembering it, such as pictures.

What are you referring to as a "Molex" ??

Molex are a company that manufactures all sorts of connectors so a molex could be any one of the ones used within a PC.

Are you referring to the hard drive power cable connector?

It would look really good referring to it as a molex in the exam :D

It's a mnemonic device. The sentence is easy to remember, and the first letter of every word in the sentence refers to a word in the to be remembered material, making it easy to remember the order.

Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Around = PDNTSPA

Physical Layer, Data Link Layer, Network Layer, Transport Layer, Session Layer, Presentation Layer, Application Layer

P =physical
D = data
N = network
etc.

Well the exam is multiple choice and according to this piano-propper I have, molex or Molex is the hard drive connector. Mini and mini-sub (I think) being the other ones - used for FDDs. Also, you have the P8 and P9, and P1 connectors. Oh and P4

I can see me ending up like a covert CIA operative. I'll be in the supermarket and someone will say "orange" and I'll start reciting the various colour books. Or someone will say "red wine" and I'll say "Five volts". :spin: :hyper: :spin:

It gets worse :cry: I'm now onto the chapter on SCSI devices. God what a mess. Ultra, Ultra Wide, Ultra Wide Fast with fairy lights, LVD, HVD, SE, HGV :spin: I've got to remember cable lengths, maximum devices, and transfer rates. My head hurts. None of it is any use :no: I can remember when you had two or three choices and you were happy and grateful.

The only one I've ever been able to remember is

People Cant Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms

which I used in my GCSE Computer Science Exam

Every other time I've just been able to remember it 'as is'

That's the next chapter I think - portable computers. I think I have to remember the various flavours of PCMCIA though. I'm getting too old for studying.
