Re: Connection problems
:welcome: to Cable Forum :D
Canyou confirm if your broadband is via a Set Top Box (STB) or Cable Modem (CM). You have completely swithced off your STB/CM, router and all PCs after having plugged it all in together, and then rebooted? The errors you post suggest it is your email client that is not connecting. Can you confirm you can access the internet using internet explorer? Assuming you have no access to any broadband service, a couple of troubleshooting things to try. Firstly if you disconnect one PC from the network router and connect it direct to the CM/STB, power down the CM/STB and PC then restart, do you get a connection and can you then use IE on that one PC? If you can get a connection we know your broadband is working OK and can then start to look at your network setup. If you are using a STB you will need to register the router as the computer that connects to the broadband network. It can be easier to "spoof" (copy) the MAC address of the PC you already have registered with ntl from the first days you set up broadband, than to register the new router's identity. Your router manual should tell you how to do this spoofing. |
Re: Connection problems
Hi, I'm using an ntl cable modem and I'm currently using the "host" pc.
to connect to the internet/e-mail. the "client" pc is unable to connect to email / internet (usually thru IE) Alao tried re-sitting cables etc. |
Re: Connection problems
You are connected via a router but you are using the "host" pc? How are you connected? Are both PCs connected to the router?

Re: Connection problems
I take it you connect like this
Cable modem to Router to PC1 and PC2 ??? Can you ping any IP addresses from the PC that is giving problems? If you go to start menu, run and type cmd and press enter, type ipconfig /all what IP address etc do you get? |
Re: Connection problems
you got it, thanks

Re: Connection problems
You should have patch cables from router to cable modem and from router to both PCs. Have you checked you aren't using a cross over between the router and the non working PC? Could you swap cables to check?
|
Re: Connection problems
192.168.2.35 & 192.168.2.17 ????
|
Re: Connection problems
I take it those are the IP addresses from 2 different PCs lol.
Ok those are normal IP adresses if you have a router in the way. Does the rest of the information match between the 2 PCs? |
Re: Connection problems
yes ip addresses from the 2 pc's... other info looks ok
|
Re: Connection problems
Try this on both computers
start menu, run, type cmd press enter type ipconfig /all >c:\ip.txt press enter open my computer open C drive open ip.txt file Copy the contents of each text file and paste here one at a time :) __________________ Have you tried swapping the cables connecting the PCs to the router? Take the cabe from the working PC and plug it into the PC that isn't at the moment and see if anything happens. |

Re: Connection problems
Is that the non connecting or connecting PC?
|
Re: Connection problems
this is connecting pc.
|
Re: Connection problems
hmm, have you got another network cable you can try between the router and the non connecting PC. Perhaps temporarily use the cable between the router and your good PC?

don't have another cable, could maybe access one tomorrow...

Re: Connection problems
I'm not quite clear on your network setup. Can I confirm that you have:
Modem > one cable connecting directly between > Router then: one cable from router into PC1 (host - the working one), one cable from router into PC2 ("client" the non working one) and not: Modem > cable > PC1 (host) then cable from PC1 into router then cable from router into PC2 (client) |
Re: Connection problems
tried non connecting pc with working pc cables - still get error messages
as before. |
Re: Connection problems
Perhaps you can also post the model number of your Belkin Router. Can you also confirm that you are using ethernet and not USB connections on both PCs for the network.
|
Re: Connection problems
What settings have you specified in your LAN connection box in Internet Explorer, tools, internet options, connections, lan settings?
Also on the connections tab you have told it not to dial a connection haven't you? |

Have you tried deleting the LAN connection from the network connections folder, restart the computer and allow windows to rebuild it?

Still not posted ipconfig /all info from the non-connecting PC. Is the LAN connection on the non-connecting PC set to 'obtain IP address automatically' AND 'obtain DNS server address automatically'? Try opening a command prompt and typeing nslookup www.microsoft.com (without the underlines LOL) What do you get? |
Re: Connection problems
packets sent = 4
packets received = 4 |
Re: Connection problems
OK, looks like the network connection is there so it's the internet setup on the PC that must be at fault.
|
Re: Connection problems
can you help me set this up?
|
Re: Connection problems
Can you confirm that both PCs have the same windows workgroup? Right click the "My Computer" icon and select properties, Computer Name
|
Re: Connection problems
See post 36 above (post edited, so you may have missed it).

|
Re: Connection problems
To try and setup the network - internet service lets first make sure you don't have any existing connectors.
Again open "My Computer", from the rioght hand menus select "my network places" select "view network connections." If there are any connectors in there like "broadband", "dial up," delete them. Now select "create new connection" follow the wizard options: connection type - internet manual setup connect using broadband setup that is always on let the wizard complete then reboot the PC |
Re: Connection problems
tried cmd nslookup www.microsoft.com
received error - "cant find server name for address 192.168.2.1 "non existant domain server" __________________ cant delete connections - disable? |
Re: Connection problems
You can ignore that error, but do you get the rest, as below?

Re: Connection problems
Hmm.. assuming this is on the NON-CONNECTING PC, you are getting out through the router OK.
Can you open Internet Explorer, go to tools/Internet Options/Connections and check that 'Never dial a connection' is set, then go to 'Lan settings' (on same page) and check that NO check boxes are ticked. |
Re: Connection problems
ok what now?
|
Re: Connection problems
Do as Johnhorb says
|

I've checked that 'Never dial a connection' is set, then go to 'Lan settings' (on same page) and check that NO check boxes are ticked.

Re: Connection problems
Does this PC have current antivirus software?
|
Re: Connection problems
norton antivirus warning that I need to renew in 21 days?
|
Re: Connection problems
Hmm.. without reading back through 4 pages of posts, any firewall enabled (eg XP firewall)? If so, try temporarily disabling, just to eliminate that as a cause. (The router firewall will protect you).
|
Re: Connection problems
router firewall is the only one enabled
|
Re: Connection problems
Have you checked your router settings to make sure you are allowing traffic from the non-connecting PC?
|
Re: Connection problems

Something odd is blocking the PC's ability to use standard internet settings. As John horb sayus, a firewall might be doing it, a virus migh also be messing. As far as we can see if you have followed the setups here you should be able to use IE, from which your outlook express would then also work (if the individual mailbox settings were correct). |
Re: Connection problems
could you tell me how I do that?
|
Re: Connection problems
Dont use Norton myself, but if you open the program there should be a setting that will show you the date of the last update file.
|
Re: Connection problems
performed a full system scan on the 20th of May 05

able to burn cd & in the website - what now?
|
Re: Connection problems
Copy the definitions file to the CD, take the cd to the computer with no connection, run the file to update nortons anti virus files, run a full scan.

checked status of network connection on this - sending 100 approx packets and receiving approx 30 is this right? |
Re: Connection problems
Not unusual as it will be checking with the router for connectivity, but those numbers should no be changing very fast if you are not trying to use the network

Re: Connection problems
Short of a reformat of the PC, I'm at a loss for suggestions now.
|
Re: Connection problems
it's never been connected to up until I tried it today with the same errors
__________________ what's involved with reformatting? |
Re: Connection problems
Reformatting - a complete reinstall of the PC software. The hard disk is wiped clean and then you reinstall windows and all it's software.
Before you reformat, make sure you have backups of all the data (but then you have that already dont you :erm: ) as you will want to copy that back on, and the installation disks and settings for windows, all the add on hardware drivers, togehter with other programs you have used such as the antivirus, wordprocessor, games, etc. |
