Software update in Belfast

According to posts on the Digitalspy forums, the new L3.2 software is being rolled out to subs in Belfast (and, presumably, elsewhere in Northern Ireland where NTL have cables).

If the rollouts in Glasgow, South Wales and Nottingham are anything to go by, this means that full video-on-demand should be enabled in the next few weeks. This means that the whole of the Celtic Business Unit will support VOD.

Coming quickly off the back of the Nottingham launch, it could also be a sign that NTL are increasing the pace of the rollouts, which is obviously a good thing for everybody who's still waiting.

Has anyone in Leicester received the VOB update yet?

I have checked and I can still only receive Movies, Sports and Adult on demand

not that i doubt u but i've just rebooted the set top box and there#'s definately been some kind of software update... can the digibox be flashed as this term actually came up as i watched it. There's nothing noticeable in the menus to i assume like the digital spy posts thats its a pre rollout thing but i am noticing the lag in navigating the menus.

Yeh My Box was running **** slow this morning. So I rebooted and got the Update Screen. The Only Change I have noticed is that the menus load much faster. So Lets hope for VOD in the Next 2 Weeks :)

Hi -

I joined this forum just to ask if anyone else in Belfast has this same problem?

After the STB software update ( Monday I think ?) the 'mute' button has been rendered useless.

Pressing it gives the crossed out speaker icon but volume remains unaffected.

However, if you lower volume with the 'minus' button it goes down to zero then displays the sound muted button.
Press 'mute' again and the volume goes up to '8 best' instantly.

I use NTL for broadband and am happy with the service so digital tv isn't a deal-breaker for me but I think whoever is in charge of the STB software needs a much better beta-testing regime.

For me the software gets worse every point update.

(e.g. does anyone else have a random 5 - 60 second delay while the STB decides to change to the station they have chosen, I know it isn't the remote as the STB is indicating an action is in progress with the green LED)

How is your TV connected to the STB? If it's SCART, check you are plugged into the TV SCART socket (the lower one). The VCR SCART may not get muted.

If you are using RF then you may have to put up with it. I think the software has been changed to not mute the RF. This is because most people use the RF either for connection to a VCR or to a second TV in another room. In either case, you wouldn't want it to mute.

But due to hardware differences, the exact behaviour varies between the STB models. Which one do you have?

Re: Software update in Belfast

Hi Spiderplant.

Thanks for the response.

My setup is as follows:

STB to VHS to TV

The STB is connected to the video using a coaxial cable (old fashioned plastic coated twisted wire ? ). I have scarts but just never bothered as everything worked fine.

The STB is PACE - HW Type 4010, HW version P3.82

I will switch to scart cables later and report back.

Re: Software update in Belfast

The 'slowness'of the box to respond could be caused by bad signals. If you also dont have a return path,VOD WONT work!
To check for a return path, press page up/down/blue buttons,Go to page 3 & under conn status it should say '5 conn (or 5 connected, i live near Bangor so i dont have NTL!).
if it does, your in luck! From what a gathered in the training,VOD is (if all goes well!) better than Sky+.You'll be able to watch last nites 'Eastenders,Download pop music videos (like asking for one on MTV,but without the wait!)Watch the latest front row films as many times as you want over a 24 hr period for only £3.50!P lonk the carpet sharks down in front of the tv & watch the ENTIRE series (shoot me...PLEASE!!!!) of Teletubbies!( how come, whenever i go to a job )on a STB,Teletubbies are always ON!!!)Sounds better than Sky+.We'el have to see,
Spike

Re: Software update in Belfast

The slowness could also be caused by infra-red interference being picked up the STB.

Make sure you have none of the following shining onto the STB:
- sunlight
- energy-saving bulbs
- fluorescent tubes
- plasma TVs
- LCD TVs

You can't say it's better when VoD is a totally different service to Sky+. which is a PVR service. As has been discussed previously in threads over on Digital Spy, and I'm sure on here aswell, they both have their advantages and disadvantages when measured up against each other, but they are still totally different.

Well,as i havent seen it working & only seen a slideshow of the features on a overhead, your right ,i cant say it's better...BUT i'm only going off what i've BEEN TOLD!!!!!
Stop nitpicking,it's only a b***** tv!

I wouldn't say I was nitpicking, but simply pointing out that there can be no real comparison between VoD and Sky+, because they are totally different services, which work in totally different ways, and give customers totally different options.

Sky+ lets you record whatever you want, off TV, and then watch it back at a later date.

VoD gives you a set selection of movies, TV shows, music videos etc, stored on a server, which you can choose to watch, often for a small fee, whenever you want.

Now would you expect NTL to give you a presentation which said that their VOD service wasn't in the same league as Sky's Sky+? Of course they are going to bull it up and say it's the best thing since sliced bread. They are two completely different products.

Even if NTL increased the VOD content by a factor of ten and made it all free it still wouldn't tempt me to drop Sky+ in favour of it.

Everyone seems to have gone a wee bit quiet on this subject since Wednesday. Perhaps this Tuesday will see the launch of the VOD service???? (This is just a guess).

Seems that whenever we receive new channels, etc, it always happens on a Tuesday. ;)
