Milan

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Liverpool all the way - I'm a firm believer in supporting all of the English teams in Europe.

If their defence have a good game, I reckon they'll nick it by the odd goal - if Cisse plays, his pace should cause Milans defence some problems, as they are all getting on a bit now.

Up the 'pool, I say. They cheered us on on Saturday so I'm going for a nailbiting 120 minutes of defensive brilliance followed by penalties, with Gerrard getting the winner.

Defensive brilliance, don't make me laugh. You would not recognise it if it bit you on the leg. If Wengers tactics were defensive then Arsenal failed miserably in comparison to Liverpool.
If you set out to play 4-5-1 or even 4-6-0 as Arsenal did for long periods, and your opponents get 8 clear cut chances and a corner count of 12 to 1, then you have put up an awful defensive performance. The one and only reason that the game went to penalties was down to United's inabilty to score, it had nothing at all to do with the scared, ineffective performance from Arsenal over the whole of the 120 minutes of 'real football'.

When Liverpool played Chelsea in the Semi final 2nd leg, Chelsea had only one decent chance throughout the game, and that was in the dying minutes, now that was 'defensive brilliance'

Come on Liverpool.:)

just to clarify i meant hamann is an excellent play, must say gerrard being given the licence to roam helps and luis garcia has played better and xabi alonso also picked up his game.

now they need to attack ac milan in extra time, the last ten minutes were poor from liverpool.

It's daft that the holders don't get a bye into the next tournament like they do in the World Cup. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for UEFA to do something as sensible as to change the rules in this case.

But its done and it does settle the game, I wouldnt have thought many scousers would want to return to Turkey in a few weeks for a replay.

And look at it another way, after 90 mins plus 30 mins stoppage time, Liverpool were the team that had enough left to concentrate. So the better team on the night won.

Its excellent to see an English team do well, and for the record I'm not particularly fond of liverpool..........or Man Utd for that matter, and its nice to dream, thats what we Boro fans do lol

nah, im a fan of penalties because its a test of the keepers and players mentally its the thrill of not knowing which way the kicker will take his penalty and the keeper not knowing which way unless he goes the right way...so many combinations to win too :) ;)

To be honest I am not sure, but a few days ago I read an article in the Telegraph on the very subject of Liverpool's possible entry as holders and someone from UEFA said that he could see no reason why they should, as even the World Cup holders do not get automatic entry into the next competition.

Clarification needed I think.

Up to and including the world cup in 2002 the host country and holders have automatically qualified. This time, it has changed, don't ask me why, to only the hosts automatically qualifying.

Looking at that document, I just wondered if joint organisation might play a role. In 2002 Japan/Korea organised, and with France being the holder, only 29 teams actually played to qualify. Perhaps they figured having a potential 3 out of 32 qualify automatically was pushing it a little?

Possibly.

35 hours and I fly out to Chicago to watch England in their US tour games. :) Driving from Chicago to New York for the second game v Columbia! Should be a laugh. Will still be on a high from tonight's win too. :D

UEFA has said this morning that they will not change the rules to allow Liverpool to defend the title. They say it is up to the FA to allow them to take one of the English clubs places

Man U's last european win was better. No penalties and losing 1-0 with 1 minute to go

But would they have to take fourth place? Let's face it, on their form in the Chamions League over the last 5 years, I'm sure Arsenal or Man Utd would donate their place to have a year off :p:

was a good game but really showed the difference between English teams and Italian one.. also applies to the national team.. when Milan had the ball they passed it on the deck.. when Liverpool had it it was hoofed up field and kept coming back..

Never a pen in my view as there was barely any contact.. maybe even none and not enogh to push someone over..

still glad they won though and great to have an English team as champs of Europe..

if you go the uefa web site and go to publications you can see in the rules it is down to the league association to see who should qualify out of holders and leage positions.. that's been the rules all season so how can they change it now. when this happened in Spain a few years back the fourth place team had to go into the UEFA cup..

I blame UEFA as ALL the champ teams be it TNS, Gorica, MTK should go into the group stages automatically and then if they want second and third place teams they should qualify.. it's just invented as a cash cow to make sure the Spanish, Italian and English teams get more money and don't get knocked out by some Eastern European team in the first round

just to say it again well done liverpool
