Flight Sim 2004 questions

Hiya few questions on what is a amazing game to play on my new system.

1) Anyone know how to declear a mayday or report your having issues, no one seems to exactly care if my plane is low on fuel or coming down, would be nice to practise emergency landings with a full crew awaiting the plane on landing.

2) Anyone able to upload a Concorde jet? all the good ones are over a tenner to buy!!

AndrewJ 17-05-2005 16:51

Re: Flight Sim 2004 questions

No one???

I would love to know how to declare a mayday on fs2004 or inform my local airport im coming down.

I cannot find how to do such a thing.

Flight Simulator 2004 questions

Hello, all I am a regular player now of Flight Simulator 2004 but I am missing one nice aircraft in my collection.

Concorde, I can only find places, which want about £15-£30 for this plane, which just sucks. Anyone got one of these aircraft or can link to one? I have found a Russian one on www.simviaton.com but it sucks and is not what I am after quality wise.

Any tips would be nice, mainly I am after a passenger jet, which can hold speeds about or above mac1, long fuel life, with excellent cockpit and surrounding panels all around, reflective textures be nice.

Any help guys/girls?

Didn't you (or somebody else) already ask this?

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

I did yes but I cannot find the thread right now, may be having a blonde moment.

Also my main point in that thread was to find out how to do Mayday communications ( my fs2004 didnt come with a manual )

NP. If it works let me know and I'll store the info away for later (you never know when it'll come in handy).

If it doesn't work, it aint my fault ;)

LOL slowly downloading what I need will test it out and let you know how it runs. Looks good and I like all the choices to make it a personalised plane.

Cool, glad you got one sorted :tu:

Don't suppose you know where there are any videos/clips of FS2004 that I can download and watch?

Been thinking about getting it for a while now, would be nice to know what I'm missing.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

I hear you there there is www.simviaton.com however I am sure www.fs2004.com does them aswell, if you wish I can make a video of myself on there, its a nice game but you have to know your airline systems in some planes. especially the 727 I have co-pilot, radio, electric systems are all controlled by the user.

Thanks Diamond for the link I registered with the site run a search, and found a lovely collection of concorde downloads, very impressive site.

Weird I visited them and never thought of using the search function or registering.

Greenys to you all, greatfull for the help.

Will post how the planes do once I have them and tested them out :).

The one in the link above is the same as the link I posted without the DVD and printed manuals.

Obviously you can get PDF manuals.

Don't buy it if you don't like things complex!

A full pre-flight and engine start procedure still takes me about an hour.

It is fantastic though and thoroughly recommended.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

ok, I've taken the plunge and bought fs2004...

...after the 4 disc install (min is 2GB and max is 3.8GB) I loaded up a plane just to get going...but tbh found the graphics pretty crap :(

The plane itself looked ok, cessna, but the scenary was poo :( Luckily, I knew the default scenary was basic and had already bought the Abacus European Terrain addon. ;)

Question: Is there a better scenery pack for the UK?

...but after the install, I saw no difference in detail

Question Do you have to enable to addon scenery somewhere?

TBh, I thought the whole Sim would play better. I have a GeForce 5900 Ultra 256MB (cheers KP! :D) with ALL the settings at their highest...and the buildings still look shoddy :(

I was expecting to be able to fly over my house in a chopper and see it!...at the moment I'm finding it hard even to find my house! ...roads aren't where they are supposed to be!...tho it could be my nav!

Do I have too high expectations expecting to be able to see my house! ...which I'm sure I read somewhere that you're supposed to be able to do...:erm:

Also, I bought some Military choppers, but they seem to go ape after a few mins!....the chopper just jumps about the place :( looking at the flight path it's shows exactly that things arn't right (will post a screen grab of a flight path!)

Another question is...is it possbile to get some panel view on a seperate monitor. I have my main screen and a 17"CRT as a shared desktop. I can move my mouse over to the second monitor, but I'm unable to drag any of the panel views accross... Is there a setting to span the game accross a second monitor?

p.s. I bought some Military Choppers...and wanted to bomb my old school ;)

Firstly, you bought the wrong thing for better scenery, you need to buy VFR Terrain AND VFR Photographic Scenery, the terrain is just a mesh, it'll just bung the crap FS2004 textures over it, the Photographic scenery changes the textures.

You more than likely won't see your house, or any other house you might recognise, unless it's a national monument.

With regards to two monitors, you have to have FS2004 running in Windowed mode to be able to use more than one monitor, I have it running over 2 with no problems.

You can't take off cold and quiet, it's physically impossible, you have to follow pre-flight procedures near enough to the letter to even get the thing started.

With the stock planes you can, I am still getting accustomed to basic navigation and other forms within the game.

I tend to fly the 777 alot, and the 737 I find the 747 to much of a handful in landing with the weather settings up a bit.

There's not much point having a simulation if you're not going to use it as such, actually flying is probably the most tedious part. As for landing a 747, landing it in any weather is pretty easy owing to it's immense weight, once it's locked onto the ILS a blind man could get it down dead centre safely.

There are manuals with every version of FS, some of them just aren't printed. There are loads of ingame tutorials and video's (flight school) though.

So I understand this...the Mesh product I bought allows a greater definiton of hills and mountains? and the above products you mention overlay a new texture ontop of the mesh?

Any other add-ons you would recommend?

Correct and VFR Photographic is pretty much the best UK scenery you can get.

My favourite conversation in an aircraft went like this:

Instructor: So, you're happy with your rate of descent then?
Me: Yep, all looks good to me.
Instructor: And the angle of descent, and the speed?
Me: Yep, all good.
Instructor: And you're confident we're on target for the runway?
Me: Ummm, yeah, it looks ok.....(checking everything again)
Instructor: That's ok then, so long as you're sure.....
Me: Well.....I was sure, is there a problem?
Instructor: No, that's ok, it's just that from where I'm sitting it looks like we're going to land in the middle of that bl**dy big hedge!! I have control!

<Instructor takes control and applies lots of power whilst I sit and listen to the thwacking sound of the branches of a 12 foot hedge as they hit the undercarriage>

Yep, grass field runway in a powered (I kid you not) glider.

The hedge was at one end of the runway, as I turned finals I didn't spot that I was flying considerably lower than I should have been.
Having flown that approach many times I was working on autopilot using cues out of the side of the aircraft to guide my timings for certain actions. Had I actually looked at the altimeter I would have realised that something was wrong.

I was right on cue (or so I though) for perfect landing number 5 of that day, the problem was that it would have been a perfect landing several dozen feet short of the runway!

As stated above.

For England and Wales you need:

VFR Terrain
All the VFR Photographic scenery volumes

Then the fun begins as you need a good, well set up machine to get them looking good.

ok now I'm confused!

What's the difference between:

VFR Scenery: Central West & Wales and VFR Scenery: East & North

and

VFR 1 Photographic Scenery - East and South East England (add on for Flight Sim 2002) and VFR 2 Photographic Scenery - Central and Southern England (add on for Flight Sim 2002) and VFR 3 Photographic Scenery - Wales and South West England (add on for Flight Sim 2002) and VFR 4 Photographic Scenery - Northern England (add on for Flight Sim 2002)

Sorry, my mistake. They are 3 for £20 from GAME. They tend to have the three that aren't in their area if that makes sense. For instance, Manchester GAME never has the Northern section so I got that online.

You can get the 4th one for £8 from Justflight by registering for their reward scheme which gives you £5 off your first purchase.

Ok, VFR terrain is a mesh. It is the best possible mesh you can get for England and Wales. Mesh defines the actual hills and valleys, nothing else. MSFS does not support higher detail than it VFR terrain provides. You can also buy it in four parts. VFR Terrain on it's own is all four parts together.

The VFTR photo scenery is only available in parts 1-4. You have to buy them separately. It overlays photo-realistic pictures taken at 5000 feet onto the mesh surface of the terrain.

Yes, they do work together. In fact they are designed to work together and look fabulous to boot.

The Euro one you've got does a much better job of Europe's mesh than the MS default but not as good as VFR Terrain does for the UK.

I have FS Global SE which does the whole world mesh at much better detail than MS default but not as good as VFR Terrain.

Once again, if you fly England and Wales you simply must get VFR Terrain and the photo sceneries. There is nothing worse than flying a route that reverts back to MS default.

I flew Concorde from Paris to JFJK last night after forgetting to activate FS Global again after an MSFS reinstall.

It was truly awful and you'd think there were no mountains anywhere.

I run fs2004 with frame lock at 29fps and ultra high on everything now at 1152 by 768.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

Yes but get an extra 512mb.

The VFR stuff doesn't really affect frame rates.

AndrewJ 27-05-2005 18:22

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

The extra 512mb is planned soon, tft coming first.

(see my thread in computers could use some advice :D )

I just bought VFR PHOTOGRAPHIC SCENERY. (Wales & South West England) for £4 on ebay! :D

Will get VFR Terrain and will see how Wales and Cornwall fair... :)

McGraw 27-05-2005 21:23

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

Wales looks fantastic. Let me know if you need any help setting it up.

If you have at least 2 drives, try to put all scenery on a separate physical drive/controller.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

Thanks:) ...but erm...don't I just slap in the CDs and install and it's installed ready to fly [over]?

What do you mean setting it up? :) ...do I have to some special jiggerypokery??? :)

Also, what recommendations do you have for a good quality joystick? :)

You have to keep disk 4 in the drive, but you have to do the usual stuff like graphics + sound settings etc. Then just click on Create Flight and then select what you want :)

McGraw 29-05-2005 10:04

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

To get things running as well as possible, you need the game on one hard drive and all the scenery you buy on another.

The install appears not to like it but you will be ok.

Afterwards you have to manually add each area you have installed to the scenery library.

There are terrain mesh settings that you need to change too.

:erm: What has that got to do with installing terrain and scenery for fs2004?????? I thought it would given that I was able to get the standard game running! :erm:

Thanks McGraw :tu: I will install the scenery onto a seperate physical drive :)

Where are screenshots (F12) and the video (recorded inflight) stored on the PC?

McGraw 01-06-2005 11:02

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

I'm not sure about instant replays to be honest. What do you want to do with them? Fair enough if you want to back them up but I don't think you can package them to a viewer.

Use a program called FSScreen to do your screenshots. It's free and great.

The normal F12 route stores one picture at a time which you must then paste into another program.

Just use FSScreen ;)

I wanted to post a link to a video of when my fs2004 goes ape :( My planes and choppers just jump about the place, hardly very realisitc. I was flying from Heathrow to Manchester last night on a 747... on autopilot (hold pattern, not worked out how to do much else!)...and went to watch BB. tbh, I forgot I was flying aswell and didn't come back (moral of the story don't fly with me cause I get easily sidetracked! are there laws against flying a 747 whilst watching BigBrother!)

...anyway, when I came back I was over Iceland somewhere and my place was upside down going 50 mph (or whatever speed gauge it is?..nautical knotts maybe?) at 11k ft. Looking at the flight path, the red line thing, my plane had been doing that sometime...and had earlier over Scotland, but had recovered from it..... it's hard to deascribe this unnatural BUG! so wanted to post a video ;)

What happens is basically the plane loses all understanding of the laws of physics and just jumps about at varying speed and altitude.

What's going on!

p.s. also my clouds were purple last night! :erm: :disturbd:

www.avsim.com or www.justflight.com forums are the best places to post these queries.

You should really be flying with full realism set, otherwise you'll just bounce off the ground

So you are saying that during flight...I had some problems...and crashed...and then bounced up??? nice! :)

..fair point, but I've experienced this problem just after take off in a chopper, there was no mechanical reason, that I can think of, for it to do this.

I'd say the error isn't with FS2004, otherwise millions of other people (including myself) would be reporting it and I've not seen it before. Don't forget, choppers are a complete b@stard to handle as you don't actually have a proper collective to use etc.

But like I said, you need the realism setting cranked right up (and you need to learn how to use the autopilot for long flights ;) read the manual or go through the video tutorials)

Caspar 01-06-2005 13:53

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

I hear you :)

...but this is not due to pilot error.... the phenomena that happens to the 747 and the chopper is identical...nothing to do with collective, etc.

I'll try upping the realism, but don't see why the plane would buggar up just because you are on newbie settings. Very odd.

Thanks anyway :)

AndrewJ 01-06-2005 13:54

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

It is weird Bifta perhaps you could help explain this one,

18000ft in some mountains ( lost track where I was I took of full tank and just flew with random weather enabled and full realism. Holding at a nice steady speed well above stall speed by about 140kts, yet all of a sudden I stall and end into a massive drop nearly crashing into a mountain, the de-ice was on and temperatures was not a problem. the plane was fine yet it really almost smashed into the ground thankfully being good with the 747 apart from landing ( aint up on ILS ) I was able to recover.

Still baffling.

Maybe there's an issue with your joystick driver/hardware, I've seen some of them suddenly lose calibration briefly, especially if there's dust in the potentiometers, that might be the cause. If it's USB, try uninstalling the driver, using a diff. USB port, reinstalling the latest ones and if it's a gameport joystick, unless it's a very expensive yoke throw it in the bin and get a decent USB'un.

It's a Xbox [to PC] controller...maybe it's that where the problem lies!

I agree lol, just had same thing again 747 18000ft 310kts autopilot on, suddenly sink rate warning plane goes down I struggle to get control ( turned autopilot off by time this happens ) and may just get control this time I went and crashed mid air into a Cessna, chances of that happening?

I only just found this thread - I cant believe it.... I am big time enthusiast of fs2004, radar and all the other ad-ins.

I have been running a group with over 30 members for a year now. www.aviateham1.bravehost.com

If any of you are interested in joining let me know.. We have both novices and qualified airline pilots in the group..

I've got the Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...896319-0098253
which is a good giggle with a flight sim as it is motion sensitive, tip forward, back left and right to move the 'craft, put it down to go to the bathroom and put your 'craft into a steep dive.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

ok, I've installed the VFR photo scenery CDs for Wales and :erm: I can't see the difference  How do I know it was installed correctly and is being used???

...so far I'm still annoyed with this simulator, considering the hype I thought I'd get more for my buck???

The scenery pack is visible in the scenery library and about 5 new entries exist which are priority 1 thru 5....

..but when I fly my plane in Wales...it looks poo....so I move the plane to England and the scenery looks exactly the same.

Any advice?

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

In the scenery settings in the display options how dense have you put it, default can be set to off, also have you enabled it to search add on scenery?

Caspar 03-06-2005 21:10

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

where do I tell it to search for addon scenery?

AndrewJ 03-06-2005 21:16

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

Right open the game, when your at the main menu, for select a flight etc etc, then goto the option menu, on display options goto hardware and the fps lock is there, as for the scenery menu its on the same options thing ( display ) and is the default tab which will open.

I would screenshot it all for you, but I need to re-install thanks to a corrupt add-on I installed taking out most of the scenery.

If you use the autopilot properly you can't really go wrong. Go to create a flight and click "Flight planner", choose your departure and arrival airport, click "find route" and you'll see a line drawn between both locations, you can drag that line around to add waypoints allowing you to line up your aircraft with the correct runway, then, click on the runway and note down the ILS frequency (e.g. 108.80), tune NAV1 on your radio stack to that and turn on NAV1, turn on your autopilot and flight director, flick it to GPS, set a reasonable height and speed and enable altitude and airspeed on the AP too, take off manually, flick on the autopilot and it'll basically fly you to and line you up with the runway, you can adjust the altitude and speed in the AP when you get a bit closer, give it some flaps, whack your undercarriage down, flick it from GPS to NAV when you get around 20 miles from the runway and it SHOULD lock on to the ILS and bring the aircraft near enough all the way down to the runway automatically, flick it off at the last minute, flare, and you're down.

You'll need to play with it a bit but the essential thing to learn first is how to use the autopilot/gps and map.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

I find that boring I like to bring in some fun such as low an high flying and navigate using maps, mainly though I use light airplanes though so long range is out of question.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 questions

After a corrupt plane made fs2004 on my pc stop working, I have had to totally uninstall it reg keys folders etc.

I have lost my f22 and f18's which I loved to fly, they are on Simviation.com but I cannot get them to download, I e-mailed the webmaster and he says those links are dead.

Anyone able to link to a very good quality f22 at the least I am missing that plane :(
