missing space in my hard drive

hi, all
i had a problem with my 160gb hard drive which was made a sound, after i format it there is no sound
then i realised that i have lost more than 30gb of my space, i don't know where i made a mistake.
i have a 2 partition 1) C:108gb now (before it had a 140gb) 2) D: 20gb now

can anyone help me?

Re: missing space in my hard drive

If you have had noises from the drive and after formatting it you find it has dropped a lot of space you may find that you have lost a section of the drive due to mechanical failure. DO NOT rely on this drive anymore. What is the make and model of the drive and have you checked it's SMART status (if available)?

Is the drive in the system in your sig? (Acer Aspire). If so, it looks like a system that is not very old, and the drive should still be under warranty.

I would suggest running Everest
http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...dlid=1&lang=en
run it, in the list on the left click the + sign next to storage and towards the bottom of the expanded list click on SMART. If the drive is SMART enabled it will tell you if it's ok or not.

In that case I would think it should not be making grinding noises or losing space. I suggest you have the drive replaced under warranty.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

do i have to ask a manufacturer of my hard drive or manufacturer of my computer?

Re: missing space in my hard drive

sounds like you don't have sp1 or sp2 so cant take advantage of 48 bit addressing? could you ever use more than 128GB?

This is a laptop isn't it? I think you should contact Acer, or the shop where you bought the laptop.

jerenus 16-05-2005 14:35

Re: missing space in my hard drive

no, its not, it is a desktop. ok, i'll try to contact acer. thanks

Re: missing space in my hard drive

If it's the drive it came with then it's the PC manufacturer, if the drive was purchased seperately and then installed it would be a return to the drive manufacturer.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

drive came with the computer. acer have a contact number start with 0870, it cost too much is it?

Paul K 16-05-2005 14:41

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Looks like a 50p a min job, might want to try the email address first to see if they answer quickly.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

0870 is a non-geographic number, so should be charged as a national rate charge.

jerenus 16-05-2005 14:45

Re: missing space in my hard drive

no, they charge 50p , they mention here

Paul K 16-05-2005 14:47

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Try the email support option and if they don't respond within 24 hours I would call the support line. I don't suppose there is any other support number listed on the paperwork that came with the pc is there?
The repair center is in Plymouth so hopefully it won't take long to be sorted out for you. Make sure they don't expect you to pay to send the pc to them though ;)

Re: missing space in my hard drive

The out of hours support is 50 p/min.

0870 numbers are charged at national price. See http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/mofaq/...70faq/#content

Out of hours number is not0870 but is 0906. 09xx numbers are premium numbers.

i have got the hard drive model number, WD1600BB- 22GUAO
manufacturer: WESTERDIGITAL.COM

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Did you install Everest and use it to check the SMART status as that would give you a very easy to see indication of wether the drive is failing?

Try this
http://support.wdc.com/download/inde...n&pid=4&swid=3
Quote:

Instructions:

1. Download the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, Windlg.zip
2. Extract and run the program, windlg.exe
3. Read and accept the license agreement to continue.
4. On the main program screen, there are two windows. In the top window, you will see the drives in your system, that are available for testing. The model number, serial number, and capacity of each drive will be displayed. In the bottom window, the partition information for the selected drive will be displayed.
5. Highlight the drive and select the icon on the top row to test or run SMART status.
6. The DLGDIAG - Select an Option window appears.
7. You will see the following options:
* QUICK TEST - performs SMART drive quick self-test to gather and verify the Data Lifeguard information contained on the drive.
* EXTENDED TEST - performs a Full Media Scan to detect bad sectors. Test may take several hours to complete depending on the size of the drive.
* WRITE ZEROS - writes zeros to the drive with options of Full Erase and Quick Erase. File system and data will be lost.
* VIEW TEST RESULT - displays the latest test results.
8. Select the test you wish to perform and click the Start button.
9. When the test completes, you will be notified. Click the Close button.
10. A web page will display the test results for the drive.
It's the Western Digital diagnostic software for hard drives. This or the Everest Smart test will indicate the condition of the drive so you can tell Acer customer support exactly what is wrong with it.

WinXP out of the box cannot address more that 127Gb. You need to update to sp2. Sounds like when you got your pc it had sp1/sp2 on it but when you reformatted you only put original XP on it.

i test the hard drive with everest, here its report
http://www.freefilebin.com/userfiles/jerenus/Report.htm

and also i test with some other softwares,

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Did you run the software from Western Digital? It would seem that the smart status of the drive is fine and since it's not making noises now we need to address the other point that has been raised. Have you installed SP2 to it yet?

jerenus 18-05-2005 10:10

Re: missing space in my hard drive

yes, i run the test, but i couldn't get the report now
i haven't install sp2 yet. i'll try after that thanks.

Might want to install SP2 first, see if the space comes back and if it does I would suggest you monitor the drive for any future noise. A noisy drive is not a good sign to be honest.

Re: missing space in my hard drive

thanks paul

i installed the service pack 2 , and then i saw the missing particle,
i merged those 3 partiticles and format it.
after that it going well.
but my hard drive start to make big sounds.:(

Paul K 23-05-2005 13:55

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Sounds like one of the partitions you merged back onto your "Main drive" space is knackered. Did you ever run the hard drive diagnostics from the manuifacturer that I posted in one of my previous posts? If your drive is back to making a racket now you are accessing the full drive I would look to get it back for repairs or replacement.

01753 699230 is the same as the 0870 number they advertise... but at a fraction of the cost... it's the geographic number behind their premium rate number...

I know that, I was just wondering if anyone knew what the report meant, so you know what to tell Acer. Having said that, as you say the hard drive is making noises again, I think you should call Acer to have it replaced (under warranty). New hard drives shouldn't make loud noises. I think it's faulty.

Paul K 24-05-2005 09:13

Re: missing space in my hard drive

Was that the quick test or the extended test? Either way it looks like a lot of the readings are outside the threshold. I'd contact ACER for an RMA as the drive should not be making excessive noise. That noise could be a number of things that are a sign that something is failing on the drive.
You need to run the extended test to get the drive status code, without that you won't get an RMA very easily for the drive

Re: missing space in my hard drive

hi, i send my computer to acer on 8th of september and they returned in on 10th of september.

i opened the package and there is a page it says that new hard drive is installed and new OS also installed and they have found virus. at the end it says they haven' found any problems.
after a day, i started the disk defragment pro it's so slow and hard drive start to make sound again, but its bit slowly.
what acer doing in repair centre? how they can repaired it in a day? i don't know whether its new or same hard drive.

Shaun 21-09-2005 16:32

Re: missing space in my hard drive

I'd sent it back if it's making a noise. They'll get the message sometime :)
