"What action do you want to take" problem

Each time i insert a CD (not autorun) into my drive or am memory card into my memory ready i used to get a pop up asking me what action i wanted to take and i could selelct from the applications listed.

Last night all of my optical drives hade code39 driver errors so i resolved the problem by editing the registry as per the MSDN site and this seemed to work. However now when i insert a CD or a memory card i never get the popup window asking you what action to take.

Anyone seen this before?

Dunno, but I'd quite like to turn the bloody thing off!!!

I keep telling it, "Take No Action" and "Always do this....." but it just won't leave me alone :(

Same part of the registry though isn't it? Try this: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/AutoFix.exe (virus scan first though)

damn Well the keys to look at appear to be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\ I suppose one solution could be for me to send you a copy of those keys or post them here?

Re: "What action do you want to take" problem

why not back up that whole key then and copy the same one over from the other PC and run it.

What happens if you right click the card reader or CD Rom drive? Is there an autoplay tab that you can reset to defaults?

What about deleting the handlers from the registry and making XP rebuild the list?

Have you tried running Tweakui to make sure the handlers are switched on for the drives in question and to see what is set to handle them?

set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdrom\AutoRun to 0

this should disable auto insert notification for the whole system... :)

EDIT: guh? does everyone else see a gap in 'Services' above? cos there sure ain't a space there! :erm:

I see a space and it's not there in the line when you quote it prior to posting :erm:

it looks to me as if the handlers are working. Except the "choose an action" dialogue isnt appearing. If i plug the memory card in it opens the drive, if i put a CD in nothing happens at all

yes, even if the handlers are on why doesnt the dialog appear?

ive also noticed that when i download something. The Open / Open folder dialog no longer appears
__________________

i've rebuilt the handlers by setting them to pick a specific application applying it and then changing it back to "ask me" and applying that.

this seems to have worked

Ive noticed now that if the memory card has a picture on it then it pops up the "Chose and action" dialog, if there is no picture there then it doesnt do anything

If the CD is blank or has only photos on it then the "chose and action" dialog appears but if the CD has mixed files on it then nothing happens

the common point is that all the types that arent working dont have a list of applications to choose from so therefore will not pop up a list,. Surely open folders to view files should be an option for every type of media except for blank???

At least rebuilding the handlers has worked, I've just had to reload XP on a pc here because networking has screwed up and won't reset :(

i had a problem like that and i had to change the home network name to something random and then change it back. Once i had gone through that process it all worked fine

Tried that but it will only network to a point and won't allow access to the files that were shared :( All working now, just gotta reload Chi's pc now, hasn't been cleaned up for a while lol.
