France to tighten immigration controls

BBC
The cynic in me keeps thinking
"Look out for a flood of immigrants through the chunnel, ferrys etc"
Quote:

France's government has announced a raft of new measures designed to tackle illegal immigration.
The new rules include the introduction of visas with biometric information, as well as an increase in expulsions.
"When it comes to illegal immigration, the rule has to be firmness," interior minister Dominique de Villepin told Le Figaro newspaper.
He also said the EU constitution - to be voted on in a referendum on 29 May - would make immigration control easier.
This was because asylum and immigration issues would be decided by majority vote, rather than requiring unanimity among the 25 EU member states, he said.
No amnesty
Mr De Villepin said there were between 200,000 and 400,000 illegal immigrants in France - the first time such figures have been made public.

Yeah right!!!

What a load of tosh!!!

Heather my fiance, went to france a week or so back, picked up my passport by mistake, got to france ok dispite it having being checked by border guards (we look NOTHING alike by the way).

She also got back in to the country fine dispite the border guards on the other side thinking I was her sister!!!

No wonder so many illegals get in, the borders must be like a seive!!

Should have sold that story to a tabloid... :(

But we're a civilised (well most of the time) country. Fine, those who come here illegally put on a boat and let it float somewhere. But those who are genuinely fleeing should be welcomed provided they are willing to work and pay taxes as do we. If they get half arsed and don't want to, deport them

I dunno about blocking it up, but I was disappointed the first time I went through it and realised it's not made out of glass. I was kinda hoping it would be like those tunnels you get to walk through at Marine Land where the sharks and the fishies are swimming about over your head.

...actually, thinking about the state of the Engrish Channel, it's probably a good idea that it's not transparent.

First of all most asylum seekers are rejected. Many of these due to the fact they didnt land in the first safe country or origin. Second of all, shooting immigrants as they come in is so stupid it doesnt require any counter-arguement. My previous point was that just because some country would do it to us isnt a valid reason

Halcyon 11-05-2005 21:59

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

Putting their imigration camp right up near Calais was a way of France saying "Right, look where you are, England is just round the corner".
Its about time they were sorting things out.

But I don't think its a problem that is solely the responsability of France. England needs tighter measures too. At the moment we are still letting in floods of people.

ok then , prove it , supply a link to the fact :) , ok so the shooting bit was maybe out of order till you consider that it may happen if you tried to get into a country that didnt want you there , again , over to you :)

Yes, because disagreeing that immigrants should be shot on site automatically means that I think nothing should be done. Thoughout this whole topic all i have said is that shooting them on site is extreme.

As for immigration something needs to be done but limits on immigration would restrict businesses. The head of the CBI has said that for every 1% of immigration theres a 1.5% jump in wealth. Also you cannot put a limit of genuine asylum seekers. The only area that needs to be cracked down is illegal immigration, getting though the tunnel is now extremely difficult but buy its very nature illegal immigration is harder to track because they disappear from the system

That depends, we need skilled economic migrants. Not unskilled. Those who are unskilled and come from outside the EU cannot get a work permit easily, if at all.

and that puts more of a burden on the country  , dont want them dont need them , nuff said , why should we need skilled economic migrants ???? , we should be training our own ppl up instead of relying on other countries :erm:

Ah, I see the CF obsession with immigration has returned. Allie your comments have once again gone way beyond the pale. Grow up. Not sure how you're going to identify those immigrants you want to shoot as the majority coming to the UK do so from within the EU. Unless by immigrant you mean people of colour who would indeed make easily identifiable targets.

If people really want to have a serious debate about immigration I suggest posting facts rather than often disturbing prejudice, thinly veiled as opinion.

Some of these people have risked their lives to come here (you try hanging on to the underside of a Eurostar while it goes through the tunnel). Do you *really* think the vague chance they will be shot will stop them?

Anyway, while I would like to see immigration lower, I don't think they are exactly over running the country yet.

The problem is that a lot of English (not so much the Scottish and Irish, don't know about the Welsh) people are not interested in training. We appear to have this idea that the entire planet owes us something. Other races do not have this problem. I see it at work. Some races (particularly Indian & Oriental) will work hard to solve a problem. The English people often call a technician at the first sign of the problem. In one particular case, a student threatened to put in a complaint about me because Premiere (the video editing application we use) wasn't easy to use. BTW, it is, if you bother to follow the instructions.

We do need economic migrants. Look at the NHS. They are having trouble in a lot of areas recruiting enough Nurses and Doctors. Why? Not enough people are entering training. What do they do? Let people die because there aren't enough staff, and too few candidates in training? Or, recruit a Nurse or Doctor from abroad?

The problem to me seems to be, not that too many are coming in, or that people are being waved through unchecked (although this does go on to some extent), but the biggest immeadiate problem that has to be people being turned down, aren't leaving, and that people in the system 'disappear' in the beaucracy.

allieyoung666 12-05-2005 20:34

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

I agree with you on that one punky there are not enough checks done before, during and after,so many of the ones who want to stay in the country but carnt magically disapear in the system because nobody checks that they have left the country.

Why is it that when it comes to issues concerning either asylum or immigration some people seem to lose all sense of what is right and what is wrong. Issues like this seem to be rehearsed and regurgitated with the same old inaccuracies and exageration and idiotic, extreme acts being suggested.

Immigration is not a problem, pure and simple. People always ignore the fact that immigration figures should be balanced with those leaving the UK.

Toleration please.

I agree there are lots of people leaving the UK these days, but the quality of people leaving are vastly different from many of the ones coming in.

Many leaving are professional people, and the ones coming in are very often not suitable to take skilled jobs left vacant by the ones leaving.

Now why did I think someone might concentrate on "these days" UK emigration for residence overseas has been hitting the 250,000 - 300,000+ for many years even during the Thatcher years, when I became one of those emigrating.

There are professional and skilled personnel migrating into the UK as there always will be , no matter the party in power, such personnel leaving for permanent residence overseas.

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

My worry about immigration can be summed up as follows.

If you have a jug of orange and you add a tablespoon of water then it's pretty much unchanged. If you do this every day for months and years then you end up with a jug of water.

UK=jug of orange
tablespoons of water=100 immigrants

I love orange and I love water. I wouldn't want to choose one above the other so I would much rather have weak orange. Eventually you have to stop adding water or you lose what you had....

punky 29-09-2005 10:02

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

You ought to be careful what you say about racial purity, Salu. People might say you're echoing the BNP.

Using your analogy, my worry is that the jug, being England, never changes size. You keep adding water, it overflows. This country can only support a finite amount of people, and I think we are probably bouncing around the maximum anyway. We let in as many as we can, but that ignores the overstayers and people getting in illegally, so really, we're actually over subscribed.

Their figures are as good as anybodys.

The government have already admitted that they have no idea how many illegal immigrants there are in this country.

This country is an island. IIRC it's got roughly the same population as France, which is 5 times bigger. Wherever you go here there are people putting houses on any spare piece of land, even to the extent that green belt is being reduced. The roads are choc-a-bloc, and there are queues for pretty much everything; add to that the fact that there are not enough jobs to go around.

As Punky says, the jug runneth over... and still they try to fill it...

I hope it doesn't come across like that. As I said. I love orange and love water. I have no problem with people from other countries living here. I just think that a) the jug is finite and b) if we don't limit the gateway we will dilute our society. Without getting into another multicultural debate; if we allowed as many French to come and live here as they wished eventually the UK would become France II.

Erm .. actually it's not that there aren't enough UK born people entering health care training (I'm talking Uni places for doctors & nurses), it is a fact that there are not enough tertiary places for them at Uni / Poly. Why ? Because the tertairy institutions get more money for training foreign students !!

Partly correct .. only the 'water' bit of your analogy isn't actually flavourless, it has a distinctly foreign flavour which will inevitably overwhelm the orange. :(
