the facts that there are only a handful of people that have it at the moment, kind of kicks it in the ass really. Especially as it was pushed around as a "Massive step forward", well it is i guess for the four people who are using it.

So because only a few areas have it at the moment it is "another project that ntl completely ****ed up" hmm.... no!

The equipment is being installed in other areas at the moment, but it is a long and difficult process. I believe some other areas have now had the software upgraded needed and are just waiting for a switch on.

I don't think (in fairness to ntl :erm: ), that they have actually launched VOD officially yet, & that they are only trialling it in certain areas.

[Edit]-Not so much of a trial, as a 'staggered' rollout, but I pretty sure they haven't actually announced it as a nationally available service/product.

Maybe it's because you decided NTL have f**ked it up when they are still installing the hardware in most areas? Bear in mind this is a massive job as each area will require testing after installation, and there are hundreds of areas.

BTW, FYI, while NTL's cable is carrying VOD, and it's being hosted at NTL head ends, it's not actually NTL rolling it out (obviously, they are involved, but they are not installing the servers or other hardware required)..

Re: Whatever happened to...

Well NTL shouldnt be announcing mass rollout to the press if they have only rolled out to a small % of their areas.

I am also annoyed that NTL are spending money on this without finishing their digital tv rollout.

ntl's Q1 2005 results includes some information about further developments with VoD.

Quote:

ntl state VoD will be launching in three additional markets during the summer and expect to be in a total of 10 markets by year end.

Re: Whatever happened to...

It comes from the old (CR2) software that was used in Bromley areas. Until the last revision, whenever you pressed the text button on the remote, the box would bring up a window saying, "Digital Text is coming soon....", although to be fair to NTL, that software was actually designed by CWC.

Interestingly, even the very latest Telewest software comes with a "Digital Text is coming soon" message....

Well there are 17,000 customers in Glasgow, and I would guess that the Cardiff and Swansea franchise isn't any smaller. And Nottingham is scheduled to go Any Day Now.

This is, however, pretty disappointing, at least if we assume that markets=franchises. A total of 10 by the end of the year is only a quarter of the total number of franchises operated by NTL.

On the other hand, it may be like the broadband rollout, where smaller areas are installed at the same time. For example, Poole/Bournemouth, Southampton/Winchester and Portsmouth/Southsea are three different franchises, but all had broadband installed at the same time -- they could possibly be regarded as one "market".

Assuming the merger goes through in the next couple of months, it will be interesting to see whether this affects VOD rollout, too. NTL are a fair bit ahead of Telewest in terms of both the VOD software and getting the hardware installed -- will they divert resources into trying to get TW up to the same standard quickly?

The new service, called ntl On Demand, will roll out regionally to ntl DTV customers throughout the UK, starting with our digital customers in Glasgow. This is the first mass market launch of Video on Demand (VOD) outside the USA."
