Is my monitor about to die?

Hiya all,

While playing some music today on my aging Siemens 17inch monitor (crt) I noticed that it has a wobble, near the left side of it, I have moved anything magnetic away from it all phones, wires, checked leads, rebooted pc everything.

Now could this be my pc's as it is only 48hours old here ( monitor is from older pc ) my pc runs a Ati x700pro pci-e visual card, and my resoultion I run on desktop is 1024 by 768 at 85hz refresh rate ( lowered this to 60hz and still this wobble remains)

If it is broken I do not have much cash and would need a replacement, anyone know where I can get a tft as I would love one of these which can handle the latest in todays games? 17inch would be a nice size.

Thanks in advance. All replies will be wobbly read.

have you tried degaussing it ???? :)

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

Talking of degaussing monitors, should this be done on a regular bassis or is it just if needs be ?

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

i believe it to be the case that some degauss on startup , some dont , anyway , i very rarely bother and have had no problems so far :erm: :D :D

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

sounds like it might need a proper degauss with a wand...

degaussing probably won't stop any wobble, i had this a few months ago at a lan party seemed to be caused by electrical interference.

First make sure all yoru speakers are away from the screen, even the tower could be causing this,if none of these try setting a higher refresh rate, ive seen this causes by other monitors, magnetic sources ie speakers and has bifta says some other electrical device in close proximity creating interference
Most crt screens degause when there switched on so its always a good idea to switch off when not in use

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

Well this wobble went as I pushed its refresh rate to 120hz at 1024 by 768, anything lower and it wobbles like hell. 120hz sounds like I am pushing it though.

I've never heard of a monitor being able to get to 120hz @ 1024x768 before :erm:

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

The power supply in my Mums PC makes any CRT monitor wobble.
It's some real cheapo psu in her PC.
Could be that causing it.

Doesn't affect her new TFT tho!!!

Most decent ones can, you'll be hard pressed to find a 21" that can't.

Sorta the same on my old monitor, my speakers are shielded, but the transformer built inside it used to cause the right side to wobble slightly. I had to have the speakers far apart so it would stop, but still, even 1-2 inches away it would effect it :erm:

Well gf said I can have £200 for a flat panel, so I had some fun I feel screenshots may do this justice.

I will add I am running on a X700 pro PCi-E

I am using a Fujistu Siemens 17inch crt monitor.

I am at 1024 by 768 at get this 200hz.

And not a flicker or whine ( it normally whines after 10mins )

I have a £450 22" IIyama CRT that won't do it.

I have a 17inch monitor doing 1204 by 768 at 200hz all i did was remove the checkbox for higher refesh.

Screenshots of anything you wish can be provided. :)

that doesn't necessarily mean it will be at 200Hz...does the monitor confirm this? it would require a horizontal refresh of over 150kHz, which is bloody high to say the least! ;)

i'd need a pic of the monitor overlay saying 200Hz to be convinced, rather than a screenshot :D

i may be wrong, in which case i bow down to the superiority of manufacture of your monitor! :nworthy:

How would I get one of those I just I admint going off what my display properties in windows says to me?

bmxbandit 08-05-2005 01:13

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

mmm. good question! i guess you'd have to use a camera, as it's overlaid by the monitor itself... i'm not that bothered really, if the monitor says 200Hz then thats what it's doing

that'd be 75Hz refresh then (the V number), despite what windows tells you!

each image is drawn one horizontal line at a time, so the horizontal refresh (H) is vertical refresh (75) x number of rows drawn (a bit more than 768)

Thanks LOL well I am back to 85hz now I dont know whats with this monitor I am hoping for a 8mb tft 17inch from OCUK soon though to compliment my new pc better than this aging poverty 17inch thing.

Nicely done, I kinda fancy a Dell tft heard rave reviews about some of theres guess I dont stand much chance with a £200 top end budget? 17inch and above be wicked 1600 by 1200 anti glare even better.

Stephen 08-05-2005 18:46

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

I have a 17inch Dell TFT that I bought from there it was about £280 when I got it but that was nearly 2 years ago now. its a great monitor not as fancy as the Iilama ones though.

I use that site a lot its where I bought all the parts for my PC.

Thinking about it, I have not come across a computer monitor that does not auto degauss on startup for many years.
Certainly never one 17"+ & I have seen & repaired a great many different models.

Your wobble may well also be a dry joint or loose connection inside.
WHatever it is, it is most likely repairable & should not become another monitor on the rubbish pile.

Thing is, a lot of the time its cheaper and more economical to buy a brand new unit, there are a lot of companies that refurb monitors these days however and sell them on, those that may have been destined for the tip.

Re: Is my monitor about to die?

The degauss wont work on this monitor does nothing on turn on and the OSD menu option does nothing.

Not at all tried at various points during day.

Can you identify the model number of it?
