Nvidia 6600GT any good?

Hey guys question time again.
Im going up to buy a new graphics card tomorrow for my mate. He's given me £150 to spend on one. I know it aint mega money but i should be able to get a decent card for that.
Currently he's running a Geforce 4 4200 which has just about had its day. I seen an Nvidia 6600GT Asus brand 128mb for £140 and wonder if this card is any good? He's made it clear he doesnt want Radeon so as far as i can see the aformentioned card seems a safe bet.
Will he notice much difference between the card he has now (i mean much) or are there any other cards you would recommend for the money? Or would i be wasting his money buying this?
The cards gotta be AGP as well as his mobo doesnt support PCI-Express...Comments and suggestions appreciated :tu:

My mate's just bought one of these and its an excellent card. Erm dunno what more to say, maybe someone else can take it from there. Its well worth the dosh tho :)

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

if its agp, thats about as good as you're gonna get!

there will be a massive difference between the cards :)

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

In that price range and saying he will not have ati then your choice is a 6600gt or a 6600gt :D
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...GP_Series.html
some have core speeds of 500 mhz and ram speeds of 1000mhz so not bad for the cash

I recently replaced my ageing Radion 9800Pro with a 6600GT. Excellent card. Much faster than the 9800Pro (in normal use).

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

6600GT is a great card, i wasn't aware it was exceptionally good over the 9800p, whilst better with combined aa/af turned on, from what i have seen, without it is not actually faster.

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

I got the card and what an improvement it was.My mate is well chuffed. Got myself a Radeon 9800 pro 128mb as well but i am FAR from impressed with that. I thought most games would have high settings as default on them but when i turn the settings up high they stutter like hell almost to the point the games become unplayable...Downloaded the latest drivers as well so god knows whats wrong with it.

Running 9800 Pro here too, and not had any problems at all with it.

What results d'you get from any of the benchmarking tools?

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

The make is Sapphire or something. Aint ran any benchmarking tools. Tomorrow when i have time im gonna deep clean my system to make sure no fragments of nvidia drivers are left from my old card which was an FX 5700...Also gonna try upgrade my bios on my Asus A7n8x board to see if that makes any difference. I mean from the reviews i've read on it, it should be a good card but it plays worse than my old nvidia card. I knew i should have stuck with Nvidia

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

Hasnt made any difference....Looks like im going to have to have an "accident" with it and take it back and say it doesnt work

Apart from an X800, X800 Pro, X800XT, X800 XT PE, X800XL, X850, 6800, 6800, 6800GT, 6800U ..

Pretty much far from the best I'd say.

In fairness, those cards are considerably more expensive than the 6600GT..

Re: Nvidia 6600GT any good?

The 6600GT Dual GPU card would be a better bargin. It's faster than a 6800 Ultra on most games, and gets a score of 14,000 on 3DMark03. Only problem is you need a specific motheroard for it to work (which it's bundled with the card and a wireless LAN card, at approx £300 on OcUK) and if any games don't support SLI it will only use the one GPU (acting as a standard 6600GT, but for some reason it out-performs a standard 6600GT in single GPU mode).

I'm still thinking of getting the 6600GT Dual GPU, but also the 6800 Ultra has caught my eye :erm:

An extra £25 on top of his £150 will get him a standard X800 if he shops around.

This is an excellent idea :) a friend has the 3D1 the kit is gigabyte(ive been happy with giabyte stuff ive used), with a 3200 and he is very happy with it,but if you can afford the ultra it will be a better single card and if you buy a sli enabled one you can always add another once lottery is won:)

If you are going to go high end, might aswell wait for the new Radeon R520. The performance looks like its going to destroy any of the current top end cards.

show me one of those for under the £150 maximum mentioned... :erm:

I sold my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to Gareth and bought a 6600GT to get me on to PCI Express. Too be honest there really isn't much in it. Both are very good mid range cards.

£150+à ƒÆ’‚£25 is not less than £150..

Actually, the X800 would be a better option if that £150 limit is not a hard limit, but if the OP cannot afford to go a bit higher, then the 6600GT is a perfectly capable card.

You can also pick up a 6800 for £159, surely a far better bet.

blimey, where? the lowest i found was £180...

i see what you mean, theres a decent performance jump for not a lot more cash, but for <£150 i still think the 6600GT is the best bet.

In that price range maybe, but you do realise you can get a Radeon X850 XT in AGP?

You won't see much difference going from an 8 pipe card to another 8 pipe card ;)
