550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Hiya all, well I have in my hand 550notes, thats 550pounds for my new gaming system, I do not wish to build my own rather buy one, I have speakers, keyboard, mouse and a nice CRT monitor. So it is just a base unit.

I will be using this for gaming on Halo and Flight Simulator 2004, now design of the tower aint important as I hate ones which scratch easy and are cheaply made.

I have checked out some from

www.overclockers.co.uk

www.evesham.com

http://www.bolton-computers.co.uk

Which are nice, any main ideas pointers, my girlfriend prefers Dell, but I find there Desktops are rather pricey I mean they want 23quid for the floppy drive to be added :Yikes: . Although I have to admit I like there setup.

Anyway any ideas would be nice as I will be buying first thing Monday morning really as cash is in my hand NOW.

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Plenty of ram and a good gfx card must haves for a gaming pc

AndrewJ 21-04-2005 20:17

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

I agree I like the 6800LE or the Ati X800 AGP is okay with me as I do plan on a upgrade in 2006 ( my pcs i update about every 12month )

zing_deleted 21-04-2005 20:18

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Can't you just upgrade the one you have then???

AndrewJ 21-04-2005 20:19

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

I currently do not have a system I am using my girlfriends laptop right now which is non upgradable.

My last system totally broke down on me and was disposed off and with me moving house I have had a period without my system.

have a quick look at this

http://www.meshcomputers.com/updated/bto_m_1.htm

configure this with more ram and a better gfx

AndrewJ 21-04-2005 21:01

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Sweet would love it with the 1gb ram and the 6800LE, but that shoves me to 691quid..

Surely the 6600gt is enough or even the X700 Pro. Few of my mates using the X700Pro Ati card and think its kewl enough.

zing_deleted 21-04-2005 21:03

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

it should be ok and in your price :)

AndrewJ 21-04-2005 21:18

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Have it with 512mb of ram, would prefer 1gb but costs previal.

Also with the X700 Pro visual card... the most powerful I had in my last system was the 9200Se... this should blow me away lmao.

Thanks for the advice towards Mesh Computers, few things have you personally owned one of there systems and what is the quality of there towers and overall systems. And does this one come with Xp Home included/installed?

I have 2 MESH systems and have been happy with the build quality. MESH fall down on customer service big time though. They will try to deliver to the wrong address, not deliver on the correct day, tech support will mess you about........etc etc.......
On the other hand, the machines are good and the pricing is very competitive

AndrewJ 21-04-2005 22:18

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Hmmm well glad I aint at my previous address, and there is a way and a road with the same name, and to make it worse one is next to the other.

As for there tech support why pay 80p per minute when I have you boffins here :D .

Looks like I may be able to beg and plead to 650 and get it with 1gb of ram. I bet the 512ram will be noticeable in larger levels.

Cannot wait to get it ordered and delivered I hope they don't take weeks to sort it out :dozey:

£550 ain't gonna get you very far for a decent gaming rig.

Try and get 1GB of RAM and a 6600 or X700 if you can.

Don't buy the 1gig ram at 130 quid buy it off ebay you can get 2gig ram for that price:Yikes:

AndrewJ 21-04-2005 23:06

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

aint it true thought that if i bought it with 512 of ram, i would have to buy 2gb and not just 1.5gb as the sticks would be different makers??

I am thinking of buying it with the x700 pro a athlon 64 3000 processor, and 512mb of Ram, as this would bring it to my budget set it all up and then once I am paid again getting a good deal on about 2gb of Ram for it.

Other then that I am off to bed, I am knackered.

Thanks all I enjoy the advice :D lovely to have views and thoughts to think on :)

zing_deleted 21-04-2005 23:11

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

I think 512 will be enough to go with for now,as for what you buy next as long as its the same speed the pc will run with the settings of the lowest step so you could just bung a desent 512 stick at and you should be ok,you going with mesh then?

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

PMSL Richard I am tempted to run it on 512mb and then pay over odds though once I am paid again and shove in 1gb of Crucial Ballistic. If I can get it in DDR400, or be nice to the girlfriend and get 150 more of her for the 1gb.

zing_deleted 22-04-2005 11:30

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

For the performance increase you will get you may as well shove 512 of kingston in along what you get ,then you can wine dine and ...(romance) your g.f with the rest

Good luck with it m8. Double check the delivery time and address with MESH as they are really good at s*rewing that stuff up :D

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Is it really worth upgrading from the 6600 if I want to play the latest games? Is the x700 pro much better than it? I'm gonna order from Mesh and just wondered.

I will inform you asap I have confirmation details thanks guys you rock.

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Well they have been open today as per there site says and my order went in around 7pm last night, but no e-mail confirmation of payment taken or anything so I assume I now have to wait, until Monday before payment is took.

Whats my chances of it arriving sometime next week?

Can anyone advise... does this PC look any good http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...187657043&rd=1

I didn't really want to Ebay.. but it seems good?

AndrewJ 23-04-2005 21:39

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Hiya that pc is a nice price but I do hold wonders over.

1) The Warranty being honoured

2) The quality of the parts being used, hence Ram low latency is better, however 2gigabyte is being shouted out at top of there voiced and is nice sounding but if its cheapo ram it will be ****e.

3) The GPU card.. the 9550?? the main players are x700 x800 x850 6800 6800gt 6800ultra so as I know in the main gaming world they are the best.

Also it runs on AGP this method of bus speed system is outdated and will prevent future updates, pci-e is taking over and also that is brining in SLi systems which are dual GPU based.

Its a niceish system at a half decent price but I would not purchase it I am happy with the one I have bought knowing the motherboard will house the future processors and GPU cards to come out, and that my ram is of suitable quality.

Hello,

Dunno if you got it yet, but I just ben on www.bolton-computers.co.uk and tweaked a game base unit, here's the spec and it came in at £597.

Athlon 64 ASUS Motherboard, , Viper Blue Case (u can save a few quid reducing case), Athlon 64 3400+ Processor, 1GB DDR400 Memory, 120GB SATA 7200rpm Hard Drive, DVDRW (Dual Layer), 128MB GeForce 6800LE, 1.44Mb Floppy Drive, Value 5.1, Standard 350W PSU,

cos your only sticking point seems to be video card, you could always get the card later as they are easy to install. re memory off ebay, yup, you can get ram dirt cheap on ebay, just make sure its a seller who has a past record on ebay.

Desent sounding machine, the 3400 is a socket 754 chip (unless your very luckythere is a 3400 939 but you not likely to find one)not 939 so no dual channel ram,

Re Ram from ebay,IMHO I would only ever buy branded memory, generic isn't tested it could fail straight away, the latency tends to be high, with ram the old adage stand you def get what you pay for

mohaa runs on my poor spec 1ghz athlon , you will have no problem with that game or call of duty , fyi the gameing at the moment is split between the two varieties , so you may need to get both if you want to be involved :)

Got letter from Mesh today stating the 4th is my delivery date, with some disclaimer behind it saying about it is only a estimated day.

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Well least you know for sure the orders gone through, its encouraging that they will build it to order or they would ship it sooner,I would imagine its soak tested to (and i dont mean washed in the sink :D )

AndrewJ 27-04-2005 23:08

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

Yes they do mention about the extensive testing period before release, they state they finish and ship on the 3rd ( estimated ) and then the 4th is the estimated date of delivery to myself, going nuts though as I really do need my own computer right now.

Also the 512 DDR ram is a single stick so looks like I will just order another stick of it asap, I can get the cash up.

Will let you know if anything else shows up, and if anyone thinks I am messing I will upload pictures of the invoice, as I know I have run a **** load of gaming pc threads to get to this point.

They can't tell you if there's any money in your account, they can only tell you if a payment has been declined, also, if you contacted your bank they'd be able to tell you there and then why it was declined.

Re: 550 Quid for a new gaming pc

As far as we can find out the Natwest say there is no block on the account, and no issues the cash is there, Mesh have not even attempted to take it.

We are trying to assurtain what has happened here, I know the card details I gave on there website was definatly, my girlfriend has just returned from the bank ( this is her card we paid for it on ) the manager was very happy to help and has said there was no block on the account, and If Mesh refused again we can go and get some special cheque.

Hope this works out :( guess it means I have to wait longer for my rig )
