TFT Monitors
My parents are getting me either a 17" or 19" TFT screen for my PC, since the 15" CRT I have now is 10 years old and one of the guns is starting to fail. The only thing is, I have heard TFT arn't any good with fast moving images such as games, and so look "blury" on the screen.
What I'm asking is would a CRT screen be better for me playing games, or would a TFT screen be the same? |
Re: TFT Monitors
Depends on the response time, and even the way that's measured.

Re: TFT Monitors
I'm planning on a Dell 24" 2405FPW Widescreen 12ms 1920*1200 LCD Monitor :D

Re: TFT Monitors
IMO 17 inch is the best as 19 and 17 inch tfts tend to have the same res of 1280 x 1024 16 ms should be ok although aldi of all places were selling one at 8
One thing to remember response times are measured on the white and some can be tuned to give better response rates than with colours, best thing is try to see them working instead of buying blind. Also find out the dead pixel limit on the screens as some companies have better replacement than others, some companies policy on this can leave you with a screen with loads of problem pixels and nothing you can do about it I myself wouldn't buy a tft if im gonna mostly play games I got a nice flat 19" crt that im very happy with |

__________________ I've got another question aswell. My laptop has a TFT screen, that supports up to 1024x768, but if I have a resolution lower than that (such as 800x600) the screen looks weird, as if the screen was using too many pixels to render just 1 pixel (so basically, it looked very blocky). Do TFT monitors STILL do this? Or do they switch resolutions just like CRT monitors? |

Re: TFT Monitors
Yep, the lower the response time the better for any fast-moving action like a game. Same goes for a LCD TV. Response time is ms as in milliseconds. However, the better the response time, the more expensive the monitor.
Beware of the way the response time is measured. Not all measurements are of equal value - for example you will often find the calculation based on the time taken for the screen to go from completely black to completely white, or vv. Which is so useful, because what we all really want to do with our screens is sit there watching them strobe. :erm: |

edit - you can get it to show a sharp picture on a lower res - but you have to make it a smaller picture so there's not much point. It can end up like having a postage stamp in the middle of the screen. If you're going to play a lot of games at less than 1024x768 (presuming you get a 17/19inch tft) then you need to decide if you can put up with the 'bluriness' |
Re: TFT Monitors
Thanks dilli.
EDIT: Can some one rep dilli for me? I've already done it too many times :( |

I can't have them at a high resolution, as my frames drop big time (I only have a Radeon 8500LE :( ) |

Re: TFT Monitors
By the looks of it I will have to go with a 17" Flat CRT.

But make SURE it's got a nice high refresh rate. __________________ Quote:

Re: TFT Monitors
May I recommend PC World to help you decide. They have a range of TFT monitors on which I am sure they will demo your favourite game if they think you are going to buy that expensive system of theirs with the five year extended warranty. ;)

Re: TFT Monitors
You don't have to buy from them, just use them to demo the machines ;)

Oh wow - "free shipping" item... Well, not quite - select supersaver anf it makes it free shipping, but leaves the shipping surcharge. I know I have a go at e-buyer, well, I hope it's not prophetic! Ordered my first couple of items with them, standard delivery .. Friday 22nd They then tell me it'a upgraded to Thursday .. but it hasn't appeared today, and no sign of the consignment number in the trace on citilink. Seems typical of the beef people have with them - I'll be rattling some cages tomorrow if it doesn't arrive for the standard delivery day, otherwise I could have taken the cheaper supersaver. Mind you, one of the comments said "they delivered ontime - a first for them" - now from other places, I've had things on "allow 28 days for delivery" - if you can't stick to it, don't say it! |
Re: TFT Monitors
In reply to your question Scott..............my screen is 17" and displays at 1280 x 1024
Whats your maximum budget? We could have a look for a TFT in your price range. Personally I would go for a TFT 'cos it's better for the eyes with extended use................ |

I am SO happy that I made the change to a 17inch tft. In fact I'm thinking of going bigger myself :) p.s. I've had my reps now - you can stop :) (Thanks) |
Re: TFT Monitors
Well I think my max is about £210, but this resolution thing is putting me off a TFT.

Re: TFT Monitors
How about using your current one just for those games, and a tft for the rest - you could get a switch to switch between the monitors.
Or play your low res stuff on a tv (if the card has tv out)... Seems like too much of an opportunity to pass up on myself (getting a tft I mean). |
Re: TFT Monitors
Not enough room on my desk for both monitors. And my TV is knackered, that's why my parents are getting me a new monitor and a TV card.
|
Re: TFT Monitors
I use a nice 19" TFT at work, and it's a beauty. At home, the 6 year old CRT is on its last legs, and when it goes it'll definitely be replaced by a TFT (LG L1715S 17" TFT 16ms £150).
It's so much nicer looking at a TFT than a CRT. Especially when you're concentrating, ie writing code and staring gormlessly for inspiration :D |

Re: TFT Monitors
Well my dad has found a 12MS 17" TFT for £180, so I think he may be going for that :)
EDIT: Correction, it was a 19" 12MS LG TFT monitor. |
Re: TFT Monitors
Cracking price where when how :)

Re: TFT Monitors
Just went to Comet and got an Acer 19" 16MS TFT, with a max resolution of 1280x1024 and a contrast ratio of 500:1. I cannot believe how big this thing is and the picture quality from it!

Re: TFT Monitors
I don't understand this whole motion blur thing.
My monitor's response is 50ms and it's fine! I have seen terrible smearing on LCD TVs playing scaled Xbox though. |

50ms!!!??? AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Electrolyte,
I`m considering one of these Acer monitors, just wondering if you have experienced any issues with it or are you still impressed?. I would appreciate any comments before I part with my hard earned cash, thanks.:) |

Re: TFT Monitors
Just to post an update to this, bought one today, on the whole quite pleased with it. Two small niggles, there is no height adjustment (need to adjust chair :) ) and it seems slightly on the dark side, but for the money a good buy I think. Also no dead or faulty pixels as yet. So thanks for the heads up Electrolyte. :tu:

Re: TFT Monitors
I am soon to buy mine, anyone able to recommend a very good gaming suitable widescreen tft for under 200quid.
