Laserjet 1012 problem

XP pro running an attached laserjet 1012. I tied to stop a print run but it wouldn't stop quickly enough (of course) so I turned the printer off at the rear switch while I cancelled the print job.
Now I get an 'unknown usb device' error and the pc doesn't recognise the printer. This error occurs when I plug the printer into another PC as well. It seems that the printer isn't telling the PC that it is actually a printer.
I have tried re-installing drivers/ unplugging the printer from the wall socket....don't know what else to try.
Any suggestions? :(

Re: Laserjet 1012 problem

Look in task manager and stop the print spooler (spoolsv.exe) then try again.
Or reboot your comp.

LOL - for a second i thought you had a problem with your Learjet - ah well :D

There goes my chance of a luxury flight.

As to your problem, swoop's suggestion dosent seem like it would work as it happens on mulitple PC's - is there anyway to hard reset the software on the printer? Like a key combo that resets it to factory defaults or something?

YOu could try to do a cold reset:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ctID=c00058439
This generally resets the printers back to Factory Defaults.

Surely, simply blowing into the cable would clear it?

Re: Laserjet 1012 problem

Unplug the printer, go to Device Manager and remove the device from there if you can.

Now go to your Printers folder and delete the printer that is installed there.

Power down the machine, and the printer, unplug the USB cable.

Now boot the PC back up and log in.

Now turn then printer on and let it settle, then plug the USB cables back in.

You could also ... remove the Drivers & Software, then remove the USB Root HUB device, and reboot
reinstall drivers and software.

what he said :) only do a good search for left over files and delete before you try to reinstall, xp has been known just reinstall the old drivers without giving you a choice

Yeah - but remember here folks this happens on more than one PC, which puts the blame IMO on the printer and not the PC.

I recon the printers 'chip' was a bit confused? Wierd! Maby the PC interrogating the printer during the fresh install did the job.......

Re: Laserjet 1012 problem

Yep, sounded like the USB controller in the printer had its knickers in a not. A combination of things will have cleared it.

Leving the power off long enough for anything stored in the buffer to clear.
Removing the devices from the PC will have allowed the PC to re-discover things from scratch.
Rebooting the PC without the USB cable will have helped the PC to sort itself out.

Interestingly, I left the printer power unplugged all night to no avail. The problem was occurring on both PC's so it had to be stemming from the printer. The re-install must have changed something internally in the printer to make it work again........so the usb controller must have been the source of the problem.
