The 5p Talk Plan

So if we all upgrade from the 3-2-1 package to the 5p talk plan do we then get the talk plan mobile phone rates as well ?

looking at THIS it looks like calls to orange will be 12.24p in the day time compared to 23.99p on the 3-2-1 package or am i wrong ?

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

Sorry but the mobile call plan is £2 extra per month, some call plans have reduced calls to mobiles (about 1p per minute cheaper)

Yes when the new prices start the 5p plan WILL include the mobile rates, it says so on the literature.

Bizzarre really.

To be honest even before the changes you were mad, unless you never made any landline calls.

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

I'd never even heard of the 5p plan until I just read the thread about the new tariffs. I had been considering the unlimited national plan as I have a son we phone in Wales, but I think the 5p tariff will be even better value as the bulk of the calls are local calls with the kids phoning their mates.

Just phoned up, first time I've phoned customer services in a while. Got through pretty quick, and spoke to a very nice girl called Amy (Scottish accent, so I guess it was Glasgow call centre). She's swapped us over to the 5p tariff, should be active in 24hrs.

If that's a typical call it should be much improved over past experience of being on hold for ages. :)

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

What exactly is a local call?

Would I have to call a number within the same Area Code as me for it to be considered local, or is this a geographical thing?

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

The downside of the 5p tariff, from what I can see on the new pricelist, is that you pay 5p for local calls at weekend, rather than 0p on the new 3-2-1 tariff.

I can see the small print myself that confirms the mobile discounts apply to the 5p Talk Plan, only that the mobile tariff is applicable to Talk Plans in general.

But how many weekend calls do you make per week? Multiply that by 5p per call and you will see that this cost will probably be far less than having to pay 2p per minute plus a 5p connection charge per call for midweek evening and night calls on the 3-2-1 tarrif.

When you compare the 5p talk plan to the talk unlimited plan which is £8 per month dearer you have to make over 160 evening and weekend calls per month for the talk unlimited plan to be cheaper. The 5p plan is probably the best option out for most customers, especially when the mobile call plan is included.

OK I was not saying the 5p call plan was not a good option, just pointing out that it was not a win, win option - there is a cost you have to consider, especially if you make a lot of calls at the weekend locally.

With regards to the mobile plan, I goofed in my previous email. It should have said I *cannot* see the small print saying the mobile discounts came with the 5p plan, only a general statement. Has anyone got written proof you get it with the 5p plan.

Locally and nationally are not differentiated between, only geographic and non-geographic numbers.

Apart from the new 321 plan that has free "local" calls at the weekend...

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

To me the 5p call plan looks a GREAT deal, since seeing the price changes I have already reccomended to 3 different sets of people I know to change over. My bill on 3-2-1 is usually approx £7-12 in phone calls with about 75% of it to mobiles so I expect a nice saving next month.

scrotnig 19-04-2005 13:42

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

With most telco companies, not just ntl, their equivalant of the 5p plan (option 1 etc) etc is the best value plan for most ordinary users.

HD462 19-04-2005 14:06

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

I've mentioned it to a few people at work today too. How long has this tariff been around, I hadn't heard of it until yesterday, you'd think ntl would inform customers of a better suited tariff, then again, that would earn them less money I guess.

For us, I'm hoping for a fair saving. With having kids on the phone to their mates / girlfriend on an evening it should make some savings for us. Currently my son on the phone to his girlfriend would cost 80p for a 40 min call (do all teenagers hog the phone...lol :) ) @ 2p a minute weekdays. One this new tariff that same call should cost just 5p. :)

We don't tend to make that many weekend calls, not enough to offset the potential saving during the week.

I seem to remember that, once upon a time, NTL and BT used the same definition of 'local'. If they still do then you can use this to find your local area:

http://www2.bt.com/btPortal/applicat...=uk_area_codes

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

I think NTL might have shot themselves in the foot with this latest price rise! When the 5p talk plan was £1 more expensive than 321, most people would not have changed to it "because it costs more" even though they would have probably been better off on it.

Now 321 has been made the same price, a lot of people will find they should change to the 5p plan and so NTL might actually lose money by charging everybody more!

Yes, it's the same, I saw it somewhere on the ntl site last night when I was looking for info on the 5p tariff. It said local was calls within you own dialling code, and adjacent codes.

I believe it has the current 1p/min cheaper-than-321 mobile rates but the new ones from June 1st are significantly cheaper except for weekend calls to Orange, O2 and T-mobile which have gone up on the Talk Plan tariff, for some bizarre reason.

About the mobile calls. I noticed in the new pricelist that weekend calls to T-Mobile & O2 were actually dearer on a priceplan than on 3-2-1 (nearly twice as much in the case of T-Mobile). Customer Services confirmed this is the case when I called them. So if cheaper mobile calls are what you're after, that's definitely worth bearing in mind.

is VIRGIN 02 ?

HD462 24-04-2005 08:23

Nope, Virgin is a virtual network running on T Mobile, I used to be on there until recently. Left T Mobile, for Virgin as Virgin were cheaper, even though using the same network...lol :)

I believe Tescos virtual network runs on o2.

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

So lets try and clarify/roundup:

1. Do either/both/neither still include the NTL to NTL local (evening and weekend) concession - I use that more than anything.
2. The 5p plan cuts the evening calls to 5p (did we find out if that's the 5p connect, or another 5p on top?).
3. The 5p plan adds 5p to the price of a weekend call (unless the 5p connect is still charged on the "free" call, and IS the 5p in 5p plan)

If it IS 5p connect for the "free" call - and that's the kind of dirty trick you expect NTL to pull, and the same 5p on the 5p plan, then the 5p plan would be a complete no-brainer.

Just depend if they do give with one hand and claw it back with the other.

So, that's what it boils down to...

Is the "free" Weekend call completely free, or is it 5p + free time (like the NTL to NTL local).
Is the 5p plan call a 5p connect only, or that plus another 5p?

Just to clarify - again - the 5p call plan means the call costs 5p. End of story. I'm on it myself and that's the only cost involved. No connection fee, no nothing.

That is a good question. I had assumed that the free weekend local call was completely free but it may inccur a 5p connection charge just like the old "free" off-peak NTL-local calls.

A further note is that the new free weekend calls are only local and not national. The 5p plan is a flat 5p for evening and weekend, local and national calls.

Yes, it's completely free according to http://www.home.ntl.com/content/ebiz/ntlhome/page/customerupdate/pricechange_list070405.pdf
- see the first line of the small print under the "Mobile Call charges" section.

Re: The 5p Talk Plan

I sticking with 1899.com for my calls - 3p for any length of call at any time. Even calls to some countries are 3p regarless of the length  (though some have gone back to the normal rates).

The good news is that I'll be using NTL to phone people at the weekends as it is completely free. I don't think I'll be any better off due to the extra £1 line rental, but don't think I'll be worse off either.

When do I start getting the free weekend calls?
