looks to me like you have bought a dsl router which has a modem built in,if there is no ethernet port labeled wan then you can't plug a cable modem in,Ive not looked at modem just gone with the name.I am taking forgranted your on cable and not freedom dsl?

Re: d-link router problems

assuming you ar eon nl cable modem then you need a cable router and a couple of leads and away you go :)

zing_deleted 03-04-2005 21:35

Re: d-link router problems

wired will be cheaper but you will have trailing cables, think of a figure to spend then look at dabs or ebuyer or aria :)

Re: d-link router problems

Re: d-link router problems

many thanks - I would prefer wireless - my pc is situated in the kitchen and if I'm totally out, my daugters PC is right above me - I'd say no more than 7ft above my head so I could always run up a cable but like I said I would prefer wireless, again many thanks

Re: d-link router problems

If the modem is near kitchen pc you place a wireless cable router there, switch off modem and plug the modem into wan port, cat 5 patch cable to your pc,install a wireless pci card in upstairs pc boot modem then boot router but first make sure you read the manual lol lol

Re: d-link router problems

This is what you want:

http://www.nickknows.co.uk/en-gb/dept_57.html#item_1068

Means you'll need to install a card inside your daughter's computer though (not difficult to do at all really):

Re: d-link router problems

Then if your daughters PC/Laptop hasn't already got a wireless card then you need both a router and a wireless card, preferably the same make.

and this

Would do the job nicely if she has a laptop then substitute the second item for this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=45581

But there are many other makes and combination, a good look around ebuyer or dabs may help you decide on a brand and model.

That seems a fair price :)

I don't want this to deteriorate into a who to buy from thread, but at the moment I would seriously consider not ordering from eBuyer.

I know that they have an awful lot of unhappy customers at present.

Sorry, that was Off Topic, but sort of relevant.

To be fire they are a lot better again now (god I hope I've not spoken too soon), we've had a couple of orders recently that have been fine.

Saying that if you feel more comfortable buying from else where then the products are available from most suppliers, "you pays your money you takes your pick" I guess.
