Windows XP64 goes gold

Quote:

MICROSOFT HAS released the final version of Windows XP 64 to manufacturing, meaning that those with machines that have 64-32 bit processors in from AMD and latterly Intel can now see what the extra addressing brings to the party.
The gold download is available to MSDN subscribers.

I'm pulling this down now from MSDN and should be installing on Saturday. :D

And well into Sunday if my experience with the beta is anything to go by :D I think I might just pass on it.

Don't know, I expect these details will be known in a week or so.

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Is the release got a 365 day limit or something?

Richard M 31-03-2005 19:24

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Don't know - it had better not, we pay enough for the bloody licence!
It's a free upgrade for XP Pro users though, as mentioned above.

I had no problems with my Via SATA controller (after hunting out a floppy drive so I could load them at install). The only driver I couldn't find was one for my wireless card (RT2400 chipset).

Yep, the drivers I need are all available.
FYI these are:
VIA SATA RAID.
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
Radeon 9800 Pro
VIA chipset (network card, USB 2, firewire etc)

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

I've heard that the release has a 30 days before activation. Not going to install until realtek get off their jacksi and give 64bit drivers for their wireless chipset, though as far as i've seen, wireless support as a whole is lacking :(

zing_deleted 01-04-2005 21:25

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

ive installed it got drivers for almost everything just need drivers for my silicon image 0860 pci ata raid card :( The nforce 3 chipset drivers sorted just about everything found ac97 drivers and got my ati x800xt pe drivers easy enough just none for above card

Richard M 02-04-2005 22:55

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

2 Attachment(s)
Well, all installed now.
I had a major problem during first boot up and I found out that it was due to the VIA SATA drivers being buggy so someone made their own, which work fine:
http://www.64bitstuff.com/index.php?download=26 (free registration needed to download).
The files have to be copied to a floppy and then you press F6 during installation of Windows.

I have installed the drivers for my Audigy 2 and the Radeon 9800 Pro with only one problem - apparently an .inf file was missing but they're still installed.
I expect to be updating the drivers whenever new versions are out.

Other interesting stuff I've noticed is that there is a 64-bit version of Explorer as well as 32-bit for plugins which don't work in the 64-bit one.
As a side note I'll mention that both Firefox and Thunderbird installed with no problems, Flash also works in the former.
I tried to install Media Player 10 but it said it was incompatible with this version of Windows - I checked and I already had a 64-bit version installed. :)

All the SP2 stuff is included from XP 32 and it looks like the task manager shows which programs are running 32-bit code (see screenshot).
I'm happy with it all so far, very stable (it's based on Server 2003, not XP) and the GUI is extremely fast. :Yikes:

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Interesting views, I've heard about to being really fast, can't wait to use it..but..just..need...one...driver /waves fist at 8180 chip

TigaSefi 03-04-2005 00:12

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

I just need the 64bit processors to be a lot more affordable first heh.

zing_deleted 03-04-2005 09:29

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

The gui is amazingly quick i didnt keep it running long as i could not find a driver for my raid card lol i searched a few forums and got nowhere ive emailed silicon image to see how long the wait will be,one things for sure once all the drivers are out of beta its gonna be something special
The 3200 939 chip is only £35 more than the 3200 barton and the 3000 939 is only £15 more

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Although the stepping is getting worse, i've got my 3000+ oc'ed to an 3800+, now benches comparably to 9800p w/ FX-53s! AMD are such fools for allowing this to happen.

My OC is modest aswell, just over 2.4ghz, most people cry over when they can't get 2.6, 2.7ghz....why can't people be satisfied!

Anyway, for the people who have got it working fine at driver level, would they keep it over XP, or keep dual booting for the time being? Thanks.

zing_deleted 03-04-2005 10:38

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Once the drivers are out of beta I will keep it(of course I will keep my ghost image of xp just in case)

There's nothing I haven't been able to do yet in this OS, I plan to make a list of compatible programs/hardware soon.
Only Symantec have released an anti-virus program but that's not a big issue at the moment because there's only one 64 bit virus, and that's a harmless one.

The majority of them won't thanks to NX.

You can't unless you have an MSDN subscription at the moment, it's only been released to people/companies who have one and system builders.

I think the general release will be closer to the end of April.

Avast has a 64 bit version, free too. Along with a couple of others listed here ;) 64 bit drivers too.

If I was you mate, i'd get XP32 up and running properly first, and make sure there's no problems and you are happy. If you go in too far, and there is a problem, it doubles your trouble-shooting checklist that you have to go through to find the problem. Its best to do it in as small a steps as possible.

Good advice but doesn't the 64 bit install necessitate a re-format? In other words, I'll get my PC just the way I want it (software wise) and I'll have to start again. :disturbd:

Richard M 03-04-2005 13:20

Re: Windows XP64 goes gold

Yep, the downside that I can see is that you'll have to wait until the end of April until you can install.
Alternatively, I'd install XP 32 then use the Documents & Settings Transfer Wizard to backup your settings to a file on another partition/disk.

That's pretty much what I did to keep my documents - no problems here.

Well, thats the best way to do it, but I am sure you can just do a straight XP upgrade and keep your settings, avoiding the reformat. Reformatting and backing up is a bit of agro, but its a lot less agro than setting up your system, having a vague problem, and having another whole set of issues that could be causing it.

You don't need to have XP32 running for that long to make sure its working, only a week or two. Make sure your favourite games work and stuff.

Nope, the only way is to do a clean install which makes sense when you think about it - 32/64 bit kernels and all that.
The Settings Transfer wizard is the way to go.

Well this sucks.
No video will play full screen which is a serious enough problem to reinstall Win XP 32 tomorrow.
When ATI have sorted out their drivers then I'll install 64 bit again but until then, the CD is going to sit on the shelf gathering dust.

Windows XP Pro x64 Edition is now available to the general public as a free upgrade:

You still have to pay for shipping though, which is about £14.

Hmm, i guess all the warezers will get the copy on the cheap then aswell, being that you can generate officially 'legitimate' ids/keys.
