Trouble for Owen?

Quote:

England striker Michael Owen has hit back after criticism from Azerbaijan coach Carlos Alberto.

The Brazilian thought Owen had vowed to score five goals against the minnows before Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.

What?! You don't rate Michael Owen? He's scored 29 goals in something like 63 games for England, and was regularly at the top of the goalscoring tables whilst at Liverpool.

When you also take into account the fact that, even though he hardly ever starts for Real Madrid, he's their top-scorere and has the best goals-to-games ratio.

Yep i totally agree with you there, he is very good, but i just dont see what the argument is all about after all, ok maybe he stated before the game that he was going to score 5 goals, but as i said in my prevous post, he had a fair few chances at goal, but just couldnt get there.

so ? a person who scores goals does not mean he is good! yes i know its his job but hes not an 'all round' player in my book, the only thing he has going for him is his pace.

what do you expect ? he is in a real madrid side which when plays efficiently can feed balls which other teams can watch and admire to the frontmen, all of his goals i have seen him convert for real madrid have been either been tapins or 'easy' goals provided by other players in midfield in order for him to finish.

a quality player is someone who can make and create his own chances, i have seen him play for england many times where service was completley cut off from the midfield and he did not show one bit of workrate to try and find the ball himself.

as i said hes just a pacey player!

Re: Trouble for Owen?

But that's basically the way England (and English) strikers are in general - Lineker was a classic 'poacher' and even Shearer doesn't create that many opportunities. In most teams, you'll find that the numbers 9 and 10 aren't particularly resaponsible for creating the chances - they're there to take the chances that are created by the midfield.

We're actually quite lucky at the moment that we have a player like Rooney who has the aggression and natural ability to break through but, quite frankly, look at his build - if Owen tried some of the things that Rooney does, he's probably snap in two.

As for Real Madrid, they haven't actually done much this season (knocked out of the Champions League, trailling Barca by 14 points at least). It's a measure of Owens ability that, in a team that also has Ronaldo and Raul, he's their leading goalscorer.

As ever kronas, this is just my opinion, but I think you're wrong ;) :p:

i dont have any problem with alan shearer he is a very good player, he has good ball control and is a superb header of the ball, i have seen him score many diffarent types of goals and watched many matches, even when newcastle has been through rocky times he has maintained his form pretty much.

im a big rooney fan no not just because he plays for man utd but i saw him make his first apperance for everton and was suitably impressed by his nature in passing, and running at players, ofcourse when he eventually established himself his raw talent started to shine thorugh :erm:

ofcourse his tempriment leaves alot to be desired!

But these are both different types of player to Owen. Traditionally, the number 9 (Shearer and Rooney) and the bigger blokes who can muscle their way through challenges and create as well as take chances. The number 10 (Owen) is less likely to get involved in the crunching challenges because they tend to be smaller.

Not according to the stats this season (and that's ignoring the fact that he looks like an overweight chipmonk, and the fact that he went completely off his rocker for the World Cup final in 2000).

Actually scratch that - he is in a different class. Unfortunately, it's the remedial one :D

No just aghast of your failure to appreciate a good player.

many speak ill of him, but he continues to score goals, all the time.

yes I know.

well if that is how you measure the value of a player you again show me that you know nothing about football.

If that's what he is paid to do it is.

Quote:

Yes
Quote:

but hes not an 'all round' player in my book,
who said he was or needed to be. He's a striker and scores goals that's all you want.

You don't buy a goalkeeper to take corners, and you don't buy a defender to be top scorer.

Pace, striking instinct, finishing

The guy's got great finishing, make's the best runs I've seen and is most definately a world class striker.

However, what's wrong with Owen at the moment. He showed yesterday that he still had it, he always even during games where he plays dire produces runs and gets into decent scoring position.... yet he isn't finishing at the moment - which to me indicates lack of confidence.

Confidence is everything to a striker, take Gifton Noel Williams at stoke for an example. The guy didn't score for ages - looked a terrible player. (Afterall, the only real way people rate strikers is by the amount of goals they score). All of a sudden he put 2/3 goals away and ever since then has been brimming with confidence. The guy is confident in front of goal and will finish.

Michael used to be like that. He used to smash them in the net like the keeper wasn't there. However, due to his lack of confidence he isn't doing that the moment. I prefer Owen to Raul tbh, as soon as Owen gets on top of his game and is playing regulary he will be back. As for him not being a patch on Ronaldo... you been watching Ronaldo the past few years? no, kthxbye.

Owen will be back, I'd put money on it.

As for that eegit of a manager for azerba'who'.... he needs to be reprimanded for those comments. If Mourinho get's publicly slated and smashed for rightfully criticising a crappy ref then this tart should get a nice fine for personally insulting a player.

What is it with the childish comments, accusations and pathetic behaviour of footballs leaders at the moment..Really pathetic behaviour on a par with the overkeen dads who get banned from the sidelines for bad behaviour.

What happened to the silent hard men of football like Matt Busby,Bobby Charlton? The managers who could take defeat on the chin and move on,not whinge about cr@p refereeing and hard tackling.

Bunch of wimps running football these days... :(

Re: Trouble for Owen?

Meh... It depends on what is being said. Football has some real comedians in it, and the banter is hysterical. The likes of Harry Redknapp, Venables, the (sadly late) Clough, etc. Mouriniho is turning out like that. Its a bit better than just: "Well played / Thanx, you too"

Some of Harry's quotes

Quote:

"Even when they had Moore, Hurst and Peters, West Ham's average finish was about 17th. It just shows how crap the other 8 of us were"

"Samassi Abou don't speak the English too good"

"Hartson's got more previous than Jack the Ripper"

"By the look of him he must have headed a lot of balls" - Harry Redknapp about the lovely Iain Dowie

Re: Trouble for Owen?

Some of Strachan's quotes are great as well...

Quote:

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan on Wayne Rooney
Its an incredible rise to stardom. At 17 you're more likely to get a
call from Michael Jackson than Sven Goran Eriksson.

Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word please?"
Strachan: "Velocity" [walks off]

Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.

Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a
yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my
priority rather than Agustin Delgado.

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were
better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there....

Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home,
become an alcoholic and maybe! jump of a bridge. Umm, I think I can
take it, yeah.

pretty much all round
Particularly during his pie-eating phase a while back. Virtually spherical at one point.

Owen - great striker, lousy team player, poor ball control, excellent shot, surprisingly good in the air for his height, not going to make it into the top ten British players of all time (unlike Rooney, if he stays out of prison, who's a nailed on certainty for it).

Carlos Alberto - hardly someone who knows nothing about football, or Michael Owen (he must have watched the Brazil-England WC2002 game, after all). Wind up merchant I reckon, and we've fallen for it. Someone whose side have let in ten goals in two games without reply might be a bit tetchy.
