And Mondays too! ;)

And maybe we should let the Welsh have St. David's?

Interesting how they lump England and Wales together - assume things are different in Scotland? They obviously have managed devolution better.

We do need more public holidays and all the national days, the four nations of the UK, should be public holidays

:)

What are taffies?

In response I think we should have st days of that belong to us.

Taffies are the people who are from taffland.

And no, you don't get one country in the UK having a saint's day off without the other 3 having the same privilege.

Why? Shoudn't Saints days belong to those whom they should belong to...in other words those followers of the religion that these people are Saints of? I agree with Gogogo, any more holidays we have need to be universal. What would be really nice is if we could have a world day off :)

While we are at it how about getting the queens "official" birthday as a bank holiday? She is our queen just as much as the Aussies, Kiwis, and Kanuks who all take a day off to celebrate their monarchy. I guess as the Civil Service already get the day they can't be bothered to push legislation that will grant it to all.

Can we have more bank holidays that are not lumped in around May day and Spring bank holiday. It so messes up the school term around that point.

I reckon sometime between August and Crimbo OR sometime between spring Bank holiday and August.

What ever happens they would be tacked onto school holidays...

We get St Patricks day off over here, don't see any reason why other countries shouldn't get their respective days off.

It is generally accepted that the six week summer break for schools is due for reform and can no longer be justified, the whole education year is in need of change even the universities calendar needs to be better planned. As a worn out, semi-retired teacher myself, don't misunderstand me on this, existing holidays for teachers can be maintained in a new academic year, there are models that can be adapted.

There is a case for more public holidays, each nation within the UK can have its national day and perhaps a UK day in late September to balance things out.

Appeals to governments of whichever party tend to fall on deaf ears as the case will be business can't afford it!

I agree why carnt schools do that as then the kids will learn more about the patron saint before they break up and the holidays get nicely spread out, I dread the 6 wks as that is when I cannot work as I am childminding my 2

Go live in the north of Ireland. There we get the Glorious 12th of July so as to celebrate Orange triumphalism.

While *locally* the 12th of July parades commerate the Battle of the Boyne, it also represents a wider 17th centurary European issue. Namely religious freedom, and the freedom to worship in whatever church you wished without the treat of persecution. You need to remember that most of the 1600's saw widespread religious wars/persecution in Western Europe.

Oh, and one other thing, Prince William (of Orange) had *Papal Blessing* in his war against King James. Go figure. :erm:

Sorry to take it off topic even further.

It's all historical. Wales was administratively incorporated into England by Henry VIII in 1536. When the Act of Union of 1707 took place Scotland retained its own laws and suchlike.

Well for those of us who do I'd like it just for once for a bank holiday not to be tucked into the school holidays... ;)
