Samsung STB Getting One?

I use a Cable Modem for my Internet.

But for my NTL TV is there anyway I can still get a Samsung STB. They Look Really Nice and the Box at the min I think it s**t ( I dunno not what box I am on ).

Also I am located in Belfast,NI if that is any help.

:welcome: to the site.

In what way is your current STB rubbish is there something technically wrong with it? It should say on the underneath part of the STB what model it is.

Re: Samsung STB Getting One?

ntl won't give you a shiny new Samsung just because it looks nicer than the Pace boxes.

If the box has a definite fault with it, then ntl will replace it - however, there would be no guarantee that you'd get a Samsung in exchange - you could easily end up with another Pace box. And if it turned out that there was no valid reason to swap boxes, ntl may then charge you...

No when I do things like Gudie Red Button most of the time it locks up and I have to restart the box.

samsungs are in short supply. and the rule is they swap a pace for a pace and samsung for samsung. If you don't like it, well..... lol.

Yup, but to be honest so does mine. I have been told by engineers that came out to look at my box 'don't press the red button - we don't support it'. I make no comment on that.

But all I can say is I doubt you'll get a samsung box becuase of red button problems or guide problems. Still you never know.

As far as I am aware, Belfast doesn't have any Samsungs. There are only selected franchises on Langley that do :)

I guess the shiny silver object Ntl installed on Wednesday is a figment of my imagination then. Ex C&W Bromley platform.:)

Sorry - I knew they were all over Bromley, I was just referring to the Langley platform. Should have made that more clear...sorry :)

Actually, Belfast was about the first Langley area to get Samsungs - they started off on Bromley, where they're pretty much everywhere except ex-Videotron London (there are a few there, but Pace still rules). The only Langley areas without Samsungs are the VOD areas, Glasgow, Swansea and Cardiff, as this reduced the requirement for VOD-capable boxes from three to two and gave us a few months breathing space to get Samsung VOD working.

Everywhere else on Langley has lots now.

I have one too. I'm less than happy with it because its very buggy. But I'm sure they will be sorted in due course :)

Very buggy indeed. Just roll out the VOD software to all areas then switch on VOD at a later date

I'll be getting one as part of my broadband upgrade. I will have to buy a new SCART or breakout for the audio, but I suppose I can live with that.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the Samsung ?? Is it an equal width to the pace ones ? I hope it fits in my TV stand.

Re: Samsung STB Getting One?

Buggy? I have had one for months and had few problems. The bigest issue is that there is NO infomation with any STB.

We would not accept a bought product without operating instructions.

However Broadband is lightening fast now.

Langley Samsungs are buggy - the ones on Bromley (like yourself chienmort) don't have as many problems :)

Slightly narrower in width and lower in height. however I think the way the card sticks out of the front looks naff and spoils the look of the box.

Good point, anyone know the soft reboot procedure for the Samsung, assuming that there is one?

slightly off-topic question .. i have a black pace digibox and get internet through an external cable modem (motorola SB4100, had it for years now). the speed upgrade article says that the black pace box has a maximum bandwidth of 1mbit. do i need to get it swapped in order to get the 2mbit speeds even though my cable modem is a separate unit? (the pace box is causing me troubles, extra reasons to get it swapped soon would be beneficial..)

browneggsandham 20-03-2005 15:00

Re: Samsung STB Getting One?

As far as I know, all stand alone cable modems can handle the higher speeds, so you should have no problems. The box doesn't affect it at all.

Only users who use the modem in the STB need a Samsung.

Nope, as you use a standalone cable modem, you do not require a Samsung for the higher speeds. You'd only require a Samsung STB for the 2meg service ifyou actually used an STB for your broadband, rather than a standalone modem.
