Weird problem (testing needed)

Having upgraded to 3Mbit, i am having a weird problem where I can't seem to download at anything higher than about 1.1Mbit/s from my dedicated server. (It may be in America, but other people can get even 2Mbyte/s from it)

I used to always get the full speed when on 1.5Mbit (about 175KByte/s) but now as I've said I can't get above 120KByte/s.

I put a cut down version of my dslzoneuk speedtest on the server to test my speed.

http://www.win-drivers.co.uk/speedte...peed=3072&blah

That reports my speed as:

1.04 Mbps
which is around 133.03 KB/s

If possible I'd like other ntl users to take the above test and post what they get, to find out if its a problem at my end, ntl's end, or the server end. Like i said, other people I know can get as much as the server can give (and its a 10Mbit burstable line).

Cheers :)

for me, the page keeps downloading itself fully, then reloading (on firefox 1.0.1). never gets to the stage where it tells me my speed. looks to be maxxing out the connection though (on 750k)

i ran the above test with no problems with firefox 1.0.1

Re: Weird problem (testing needed)

seems to be a local proxy problem, using any other proxy not in manchester gives me almost full speed. Damn

Re: Weird problem (testing needed)

in which case stay on the proxy and give it about a week, then swap back will probably be ok then ;)

what the? Half the proxies are so slow.... what's causing this? Only Huddersfield and Colchester proxies actually get top speed.

Oh well :)

added a note at the bottom of the result to indicate what proxy the test was run on

We shouldn't have to change proxies but are forced into doing so if we want to acess a site that is unobtainable unless we use a specific one. When I need to change I always make sure that I go back to not specifying a proxy as soon as possible.

Without specifying a proxy you can be using several different ones AFAIK depending on the site you want to visit. If everyone has no proxy specified then NTL can balance loads but if a lot of customers specify a proxy and leave the setting at that proxy then it can play havoc with speeds. With the speed increases now coming into affect it is quite possible that customers may notice a deterioration of speeds during peak periods and start the proxy dance in an effort to get the full speed back.

This can result in much more strain being put on the proxies and a significant increase in th'engineer's posts maybe putting him over the usage allowance. :D :D :D :D :D

The problem is tho, using the default transparent proxy on most sites gives me full speeds. Its just this one server so far, where the problem exists. How can two proxies out of most of them give you full speed and the rest all seem to be capped around 1Mbps. Its just weird...

I think we could do with some expert on these we might be testing wrong wonder if BBK or Ign might comment

Re: Weird problem (testing needed)

Well, we are using the same server, the same speed test, and several different proxies. The results speak for themselves, indicating that some proxies are having problems.

I still find it hard to believe how most of the proxies return a result of almost 1Mbps every time. It's as if its capped, somehow. If it was just latency, or a load issue, surely the proxy would return different results (high and low) and not an average of 1Mbps every time?

Errr...what does www.dslzoneuk.net/ip_checker.php state?

Make sure the port 8080 is in the LAN settings, happened to me before.

heres something interesting. Look at the proxy lookups from AllNetTools.

Note the proxies that are giving full speed (colc and hudd) have different identications to the ones that don't. (The TrafficServer version # bit)

Coincidence? Different traffic server versions bug?

No. Its on port 80....

ADSLGuides test is on port 8080, so it does bypass proxies.
