NTL Ripping us all off

As you know there are different speeds 1mb, 2mb and 3mb, can anyone tell me if anyone actually gets there true speeds, I have seen in the poilcy that it says "upto" but NTL is the worst company for not giving out there true speeds, I have upgraded to 3mb and I am damm annoyed cus I am getting 2k more and that should be 5-6k more than I am getting now.

NTL have been ripping us all off for a while but it's pointless complaining about it, soon as I get a BT line installed bye bye NTL, I ain't never coming back, 5 years I have taken this crap, well no more

WOW!!

I didnt know that at all, 2k more instead of 5-6k more I bet that hampers your enjoyment of the internet, I'd leave as well personally that service is terrible

Is this guy for real? Sounds like a wind up to me.

"Up to 2Mb" applies to ADSL as much as to cable, I've just run 12 tests on my 2Mb ADSL line and got an average of 1667.

I'm sure I'm thick and it is early but.. what do you mean 2k more, 5-6k more etc.. I don't get it.

Speaking for myself my 2Mb service works at the quoted speeds, up and down.

Re: NTL Ripping us all off

10 tests on 2M ADSL avg 1976
10 tests on 3M Cable avg 3275

using Robin's speed test and averaged results to make them more manageable

well within specs allowing for overheads

Mog 15-03-2005 08:56

Re: NTL Ripping us all off

I got the following using Robins Speed test..!

I'm guessing this is typical for a 2mb connection! Anybody confirm this !!

1st 128K took 541 ms = 242277 Bytes/sec = approx 2016 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 530 ms = 247306 Bytes/sec = approx 2058 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 541 ms = 242277 Bytes/sec = approx 2016 kbits/sec

Re: NTL Ripping us all off

No problems with that Mog

Re: NTL Ripping us all off

As i have said in another thread it must be cold under the bridge or its the troll mating season :)

And here's my test

Tue, 15 Mar 2005 08:24:23 GMT
1st 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 360 ms = 364089 Bytes/sec = approx 3029 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 344 ms = 381023 Bytes/sec = approx 3170 kbits/sec

Now i do think that is about right dont you, So i will not be taking NTL to court today.

Got these results on 2meg NTL:

Tue, 15 Mar 2005 08:33:13 GMT
1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 515 ms = 254509 Bytes/sec = approx 2118 kbits/sec

Sometime drops to around 1920-50, but never seen it any lower than that.

ADSLGuide used to publish details of all speedtests run over the month and the fastest ADSL provider never got much more than 440Kbps on a 512k connection.

These results appear to be rather fast: maybe this page was in the browser cache.

Had to include that comment at the end, yes, ntl are really ripping us all off, I mean come on, I pay for 3meg, and it get... 3meg, its rip off Britain I tell you :/

Maybe the guy didn't explain himself correctly. He could be referring to upload speed.

I like to give people the benefit of doubt before bitching :)

I got the impression he was talking about upload, although he didn't make it clear.

Stop It 15-03-2005 11:40

Re: NTL Ripping us all off

True, It would make sense then, but then ADSL is as bad, if not worse at uploading, A friend on mine on 512/256 Pipex ADSL is lucky to get 18/20k upload off peak, oh, and ADSL guide says my upload is a cool 35.5kB/s average.

The only thing that annoys me is i pay for 3mb but am limited on how much i can download. If i pay for it i should get it. The 1gb a day limit can be reached in under an hour. I know they havn't really enforced the cap yet but i personally think its crazy, what can you do though, everyone is doing it!

You can reach one gig a day by capping broadband services?

BTW, we do already have a capping thread at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=25635

What you pay for is a connection that allows you to download at up to 3Mbps and which has a usage restriction. :)

Ahem, we already have a thread for discussing the caps.

Re: NTL Ripping us all off

Im talking about NTL ripping us off by us paying £38 or so a month and only getting potentially full speed for an hour a day. Hense placing a 1gb a day cap. If you pay for a service you should get unrestricted downloads. Its like getting Cable T.V and only being allowed to watch it one hour a day.

Then you need to post your comments in the cap thread we already have running here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=25635

If your issue is the cap, please post in that thread rather than start a new one to discuss it.

Yes it does, as I personally don't believe anything legal can be done to use a gig in an hour.

However, I'd gladly be corrected?

Downloading Linux ISOs (close to 3 gig I believe when I last looked), video trailers, trial versions of games. It's possible, but I certainly don't do that every day.

Someone said it was impossible to download 1gig in an hour legally. They were wrong. I listed some obvious ways. Another is streaming video for example.

This is not a cap discussion.

For those that want to discuss the cap, please do so in the link I gave earlier as this thread will now be closed.
