3meg worth it?
As it stands since the upgrade, i have never downloaded faster than 200kb/s, maybe it's a problem on my end, but im thinking download sites cant send data to me as fast as the modem can handle. Has anyone managed to download >300kb/s? If so, from where? I'd like to see for myself if there is a problem on my end.

Re: 3meg worth it?
I'm looking at grabit under this window right now going at 350-360kB/s, the graph is more or less flat on top.
Try downloading something from here and see what you get, i always max out there. |

Re: 3meg worth it?
Yeah, the speed test results show im on 3meg, and I was capping my speed on the blueyonder site, so obviously its the sites im downloading off of.
Looks like I'll be emailing fileplanet support, as I'm only getting 95KB/s off of the subscriber servers.... "High speed", my ass. |
Re: 3meg worth it?
Try changing Proxy's it makes a VAST difference to the 3 meg service.
My default cache gives me a top speed of about 150k download on most sites, changing to other proxies gives me 370k !! Its a shame NTL haven't upgraded the proxies to match their new speeds in all areas, some people will be paying for no difference as the proxy will limit them. |
Re: 3meg worth it?
Sorry im not up to date with proxies,
How can i change my proxy? |

Re: 3meg worth it?
So someone in the Manchester area should use a manchester proxy, and someone in the Renfrew area should use a renfrew proxy for optimal performance?

Re: 3meg worth it?
im not usualy a big downloader but i can deffo say that you can get faster than 200k but only on some sites, ive just bought the cronicals of riddick game from gamespot (3.5 GB there goes the cap!! wooops) and it shot down at a constant 290k a sec!! :) :)

Re: 3meg worth it?
I have only managed 3mbit in ONE thread from one server, that is a 100mbit server I colocate in germany, I could probably also get it from my other 2 100mbit servers I colocate and from uk 100mbit+ servers. I can easy get 3mbit over multiple threads and I can also usually get it on uk speedtest sites. What you will start to notice is you wont get it of sites hosted outside of europe and even some sites in europe wont be able to give you the speed eg. 1 10mbit server can only cater for 3 3mbit users and then it only has 1mbit left.
For things like web browsing you will be downloading loads of small images eg. this site the post reply button is 3.2k in size so when downloading lots of small files rather then big files your speed will be lower so if you just browse websites then a 3mbit connection isnt going to feel much different then a 750kbit connection. Things like fileplanet.com will probably on most occasions not max out a 3mbit connection in 1 thread. |

Which is not a NTL problem, it depends on the server your downloading from, and the difference in price from the 2mb to 3mb is a big chunk every month, I think its not worth the extra £13 a month, Just to say to my m8's "I have 3mb BB" ;) |

Re: 3meg worth it?
I think it is worth it at the moment. probably about the limit really that you need. movie "sized" files take an hour to download for me maybe a little more.
What I am more interested in now is my upload speed. I wish NTL would do something about that now. I think if my upload was about a meg or 2 then it would suit me just fine, I could run a web server from my personal server rather than paying out extra to purchase good hosting. |
Re: 3meg worth it?
HI all
when on the 1.5Mbit service my speed tests were typically in the 1.41 Mbit range. Since upgrading to 3Mbit typical values sre: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 19:42:25 UTC 1st 128K took 406 ms = 322837 Bytes/sec = approx 2686 kbits/sec 2nd 128K took 515 ms = 254509 Bytes/sec = approx 2118 kbits/sec 3rd 128K took 516 ms = 254016 Bytes/sec = approx 2113 kbits/sec 4th 128K took 500 ms = 262144 Bytes/sec = approx 2181 kbits/sec It's the same whichever speedtest site I use - about 2.3Mbit I haven't changed anything else hardware wise Is it me or is it them - should I get them to check my Modem out? Grateful for advice. Geoff Grsate |

I get this...

Re: 3meg worth it?
Easily worth it.
I hit 340-355KB/s almost constantly. The only thing that will kill it is the Proposed 1GB a day cap, then it is most certainly NOT worth it..... Anyway, this is not a cap thread so.................. :disturbd: |

Re: 3meg worth it?
I am monitoring anything I upload/download at the moment and few of the systems I regularly use give me performance over 2mbit - so I am considering downgrading. The main thing that puts me off at the moment is the reduction in u/l speed to 200k - but looking at my usage logs so far - I don't seem to upload much.
|
Re: 3meg worth it?
I am also downgrading when the 30 days is up, I download a fair bit but I can still download good enough with 2mbit, with a significant saving i £.

Re: 3meg worth it?
My broadband upgrade has been brilliant.
A new config file updated the poor power levels I had, my broadband connection hasn't dropped since and I get downloads around 350kb/s. Is 3mb broadband worth it, in my opinion yes and I have been constantly moaning about the service for a while - this is based on the basis something doesn't go tits up ;) |
