Dog walkers face Army guns risk
Dog walkers and youngsters are putting their lives at risk by crossing Army firing ranges.
Trespassers have been spotted on Middlewick firing ranges during practice, according to Udai Gurung who runs the Colchester site.
The range was closed on safety grounds but is now back in use.
The Army is hosting a public meeting in Colchester on Friday to discuss the issue with residents.

'Fences broken'
Mr Gurung said: "After concerns about safety the ranges were closed for six months to allow repairs to boundary fences and danger signs.
"Although this has been done there have been two cases of fences being broken through and we have seen dog walkers on the ranges during danger periods.
"Youngsters have also been seen on the ranges during firing.
"No serious incidents have happened yet and we want to make sure people are aware of the dangers and of our intention to prosecute for trespass.
"We are warning them off publicly for their own good."
WTF are they thinking??? :Yikes: They must have to take bin liners with them to clear up after the poor dogs

Last weekend on private land where we skirmish near reading we encountered a member of the public tresspassing.
When a marshal approached her to tell her she was on private land and at risk of injury she started having a go at him!

What about the "right to roam" type legislation that ramblers got recently? I think that allowed them to go virtually wherever they wanted over private fields and stuff, so why not firing ranges too? So they have a death wish.

Sounds to me like removing them from the gene pool would be doiing all of us a favour, and the dogs would certainly have a hapier life..

I remember when the TA had one of their big weekend excersizes many years ago, the TA centre that used to be next door to me set up a check point on private land that they did not own. I ended up with one TA soldier across my bonnet and another in the hedge, they told me I was not able to pass the checkpoint, to gain access to my house. I called the police and the illegal roadblock was removed, after I was not the only one to complain about it.

Having so called grown ups walking around with guns outside army property, and challenging the public for an excersize is not on.

Did you have permission to be on the private property or were you tresspassing?

The mind boggles, Colchester has been a garrison town for centuries and locals are so feckin stupid to walk on a range''at any time''. :Yikes:

As was said earlier, maybe this will get some of the defective genes out of the gene-pool.

Morons.....

Yes I did have permission, a right of way on our deeds.

The TA seemed to be under the impression they could do as they damn well pleased, their attitude meant that they lost the weekly use of some derelict railway land that they had been usng for years as a result of their attitude.

If they had been given permission to use the land then they may not have been informed that other members of the public also had permission to pass.
As such that would have been the fault of the land owner in no explaining the situation, or who ever in the chain of command who did not inform those at the bottom.

Now if the TA had not actually been given permission to be there then they were tresspassing and should have been dealt with as such.

How's that work Xaccers, its his land isnt it he's talking about!?

Presumably it's someone else's land that Escapee has a right of access through to get to his property - any good lawyer should make sure that he had access rights when he bought his property (the legal term for what happens when the lawyer is asleep on the job is 'buying a helipad'). Hence the TA were in the wrong, and Escapee was perfectly right to tell them to **** off and contact Plod to report them for obstruction.

The owner of the land gives permission to Escapee to pass because Escapee needs to to get to his house.
The owner also gives the TA permission to be on the land but neglects to inform them that there are other members of the public (such as Escapee) who also have access.
The TA meet Escapee on private land which they believe to be the only ones with permission to be on, treat him badly and as a tresspasser or however they treated him.
Escapee has a right to be there, and a right of passage, therefore the TA have no right to prevent him doing this and so was able to get the police to put the TA in their place :D
The fault of the mixup lies with whoever neglected to inform the TA who set up the road block that they did not have permission to do so.

If you or I had tried to pass as just members of the general public then the TA would have been able to stop us as we'd be tresspassers.

We were doing a major exercise a couple of years ago near York and there was a girl guide camp right in the middle of our exercise!!!!!! And when we told the guide leader, so look rather embarrised, but asked us if we would like some of the girls to help in the mock battle!!!!!

The owner of the land hadn't given the TA rights to use it, the land was owned by a private company and a few years after the incident was bought by the local council. The deeds to our property dating back to 1835 gave access across this lane that was owned by the private steelworks.

The steelworks closed before nationalisation, and the company retained ownership of the land even though they had no other operations in this area. The TA just acted as though they could do as they pleased, I had an ex-GF who was in the TA and she said it is common, they were always paying out compensation for damage during excersizes, they would drive through any land they wanted and sort out the legalities at a later date.

On another interesting point, the local police has/had (not sure up to date) a firing/shooting practice on the mountainside. The area was not sealed off and there was a big fuss from people walking across a path through the middle of it. one of my friends at the time said there were branches with bits shot off all over the place, and there was no way of telling the un-official site was in use, apart from hearing the shots. I am not sure if it was an official thing or just some police shooting club, possibly just shotguns.
