Other pop3 options?
 

Hi all!

Well, after yet another couple of days of no emails from ntl, I'm sick to the back teeth. I've been waiting on a couple of important emails, and they appear to be in limbo somewhere!

I don't have the option to change our isp, as it's my parents connection, and would involve changing the telephone back to BT etc (although that would be my first choice, as we're in Southampton and have had continuous problems for the last year or two!).

What are my options with regard to other email providers? I have a few other incoming email accounts, but have to send through ntl's smtp server, which defeats the object. Are there any isp's I can send and receive through which bypass ntl entirely? I've got a hotmail account too, but that's hardly reliable! I don't mind paying for a decent reliable pop3 email service - is there anyone you can recommend???? Please?????!!!!

as Acathla says, Gmail is an option, there is a thread running on here with people who can send you an invite.

or, if you are willing to pay, then why not register a domain & get it hosted, this will then give you many options with addresses, forwarding, etc.

I really want my emails running through outlook. Can I do this is Gmail?

You can set up POP access (but I find it a bit flaky) for GMail. Free of charge (for now) and plenty of invites floating about makes it my number 1 choice.

I believe you can install a small utility called Gmail Notifier (see Gmail Help) that launches with Windows and notifies you when there are incoming messages, or you can configure Outlook Express and most popular e-mail clients to automatically download e-mails. Basically all you have to do is enable POP 3 messaging on your Gmail account then set up a new account in OE (or your chosen client) and alter a few settings.This would give you two options. Being able to download the emails into outlook is a must - in what way do you find it 'flaky'? What problems are you having?

Every so often it will download the same message two or three times or time out.

Nothing major but it can be a little annoying if you are following a conversation and get lost with duplicate emails.

Well, account is setup (thanks to Earl of Bronze for that!), and all looks good so far.

I've got it set up for outlook to download the messages, and it's managed to download some, but when a new email arrives it doesn't seem to want to download immediately to outlook. Any thoughts anyone?

I use Pepperfish - www.pepperfish.net

I have just the one account with them, with two aliases. Costs me £10 pa. So for, touch wood, no problems - I've been with them nearly a year. I'm thinking of moving all my accounts to them - bit of a hassle though.

I use both gmail.com and yahoo.co.uk both are great IMHO.

I use Yahoo Mail as my main email address, this has pop access, I've used it for about 5 yrs now. Very little spam as they have built in spam filters, and very reliable.

Saying that, I don't normally have trouble accessing my NTL Mail, but it does get spam ridden, especially in the last couple of yrs, I've reported mass mailing to batches of names before, but they don't seem bothered about the increased traffic it must put through their servers.

Yahoo Mail is very good though, and accessible from anywhere via the web too just like normal. But I rarely log in via the web, just send and received via Outlook, Outlook Express or Incredimail.

If you download the Yahoo Companion Toolbar too, it also tells you as soon as mail comes into your inbox, so you can collect it straight away...this has been around for years, long before Gmails' notifier (as much as I like Google) :)

Hi ...

I actually use fasthosts.co.uk email service - it costs a bit - but gives you a virtual exchange server email account. You can then access your diary, contacts, emails etc as if you were using a workplace email exchange system ...
