binary newsgroups on NTL

Is it just me or have the binary newsgroups all stopped being updated since about 2:30pm today? :dozey:

I just looked in a couple of groups & headers were timestamped latest 00.17 for today.

So looks like it isn't just you ..........

Looks like their miserable excuse for a news service finally died then!

Either that or they're removing all binary groups as a cost cutter for the forthcoming speed upgrades :Yikes:

A case of what NTL giveth with one hand, they taketh away with the other  ?

More like they giveth with one hand, then use both hands to take two away. :P

Why not try www.newshosting.com unlimited newsgroup access for $14.99.
I did and havent looked back since!!

Claranews are better. UK based, pings of 10-20.

I would never use a newsgroup provider out of Europe - sloooooow!

Astraweb always works for me, averages around 700kbps. They do have a few niggles now and again but generally they are ok, plus you can buy a set ammount of Gigs for a 'one off' fee and use them whenever, no time limit, so you are not locked into a repeating monthly fee.

Yeah, 150KB/s is so slow! It's unlimited downloads for about £8 a month. It's a great service. I've used it for about a year now. Never had a problem with them.

£29 a year is OK... Will it work ok with NTL (750kb) & X-News Program??:dunce:

Hmm, but remember ALL the data downloaded is counted against your 10Gig a month limit, that includes headers. If you're in a busy group that can be a lot of data if you choose to catch up with new headers, or even download all headers!

10GB a month is FINE...
30GB a Month with NTL. I use 11GB MAX. Thats with News Groups. So 10GB is fine I think

I'd consider if you need a seperate subscription newsgroup service then. You don't seem to be downloading a huge amount, so do you need a binary service? NTL probably do a good enough text service.

Anyway, I was just highlighting the fact that their limits include header downloads too, which to me is a bit poor. Most news service providers allow you free downloading of the headers without it counting against your limit. When I was on the newshosting 40Gig plan you knew that the headers weren't part of the limit.

Ignition 21-02-2005 01:41

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

Clara's retention is poor these days, worse than a lot of ISPs.

Newshosting's retention is around 26 days on all groups, and it consistently maxes out my 2Mbps DSL. Header downloads come in at over 200kB/s, 2 threads maxes me.

Certainly not slow at all even though it's in the USA, still a lot of bandwidth trans-Atlantic.

Well, looks like they truncated news.ntlworld.com server.
It worked yesterday, but today I have got no updates, only incompleted files. It means that the service is working but they now filter what we can see in the news :(

Looks like we still don't know if it's a fault, or a furter decimation of the news server

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

It doesn't look like a fault.
If it were a fault, you would not be able to connect to the news server or or would not be able todownload ANY updates at all. But you can download updates, they are just decimated to uncompleted posts. It shows, that it works but decimated, this time completely. I have heard about this kind of ISPs before, but I have been always proud of NTL.
Not anymore.

Somethings up that's for sure. There's a post on ntl.discussion.broadband from Feenix who says:

Quote:

ok, spoke to them [Tech support] and they are having the same problem, they have escalted it to faults, keep your fingers crossed.
Feenix
so hopefully it's just a fault - but it wouldn't surprise me if NTL have dropped the binary groups completely :td:

Anyone know of a decent ISP that carries the binary newsgroups? I don't download enough from them to warrant a paid-for newsservice (just a few postings from alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc mainly - on the rare occasions there's something decent to download). Plusnet used to carry them, but looking at their website I can't find a list of what newsgroups they now carry. :dozey:

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

I've just had a long chat with a NTL tech support guy, who semed very friendly and helpful (and Welsh :) ). The news problem was identified at around 6pm Sunday night, work started on it at about 7pm Sunday night. It is on priority, but unlike the email servers, they dont have a backup server ready to use in its place (because of the insane amount of data stored in the binaries I suppose). He also said the email/news support people do work 24hours, but they have "reduced staff" at night (which probably means one person).

He said the newsgroups have now been "officially" down for almost 24hours, because of the massive amount of data to be backed up and then put back after repair it could easily take another 24-48 hours. He also said any binary news posted between 6pm Sunday and when comes back online will all become available, as its already queued up.

Im just refreshing one binary newsgroup every few hours too see if its back, I did get some old data appearing before dinnertime, but its gone now.

He also told me the binaries have NOT been taken down perminantly, this is just a rumour - this is nothing but a hardware fault that has to be repaired.

I suppose in 48 hours we will see it hes telling the truth, he had no reason to lie to me though.

NTLs news.virgin.net is also the same as the NTL news binaries (nothing there), if anyone doesnt know we can all use this too.

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

Giving the matter some thought, either the NTL guy was telling the truth, or NTL are "testing the water" as to how many people are p*ssed off with stopping the binaries (so they can decide whether to drop them for good, SO BE SURE YOU COMPLAIN), or he was lying (or misinformed) and they are gone (doing this to customers isnt very good though, so probably unlikely).

If you call the status line (0800 052 4315), there is no mention of the binaries, the NTL guy was surprised about this as he was sure there would be one. There are a few messages about a lot of upgrades to Broadband today (Tuesday) and some email upgrades too.

NTL have never talked about the newsgroups much anyhow, they probably dont want any more people leeching off the binaries, so I think we can put no information about the status down to NTL being covert about the newsgroups existance, I know many NTL users who leech 24/7 off the binaries.

Planning ahead in case they dont come back - http://www.news.astraweb.com seems the cheapest unlimited download news service (US$10 pm, thats about £5.50), does any user know if its OK? Is it as least as good as NTL was? (NTL was never amazing, but I was always happy with it).

A refresh this morning on a binary newsgroup brought up some random files posted on the 19th BTW.

Can more people call the helpline (0845 650 0121) and ask about the binaries (they wont know what you are talking about, you have to be pushy (but polite) until they put you through to someone who knows about this), just to remind them we are here and we havent forgotten the binaries (in case they are testing the water as I have already suggested).

Lets see whats happening in 36 hours!

Thanx

it's like signing up to broadband with NTL and then paying gmail for an e-mail account and BT for HTTP..

NTL should be providing this and should be fixing these problems..

At last, NTL admit it! That should mean that itll be definatly back (and hopefully soon), no points to NTL for how long its taken though, I was starting to think it got a low priority!

I know NTL has a lot of critics and a few people have some real issues with them, but im in general a happy customer and they have given me 3 modems so far (and this was all their errors, I didnt ask for them) - has anyone had more than 3 out of them? Is there a record?

Many ISPs dont supply newsgroups, look at AOL for example! I do agree they should, the binaries do cause large bandwith usage so I suspect that is a lot to do with it!

I've never understood these bandwidth 'issues' that people keep mentioning ?

Surely if NTL own their own network and their customers use their own newserver (thus never leaving their network) then its far cheaper for them than not providing a newsserver and thereby forcing customers to use an external server (Easynews/Giganews/Newshosting etc) and then pulling the bandwidth from outside their network which must cost them more money ?

Even so the data pipes are only so big, so some savings on bandwidth have to made somewhere, can you see NTL putting more pipes in with how much money they've lost?

Have to agree with Ianuk.
When the Ntl News servers are down I have to go else where which is costing them bandwidth.
When I use theie news server it costs them noght.
They dont need biger pipes otherwise they would offer a beeter service to atract custmers rather than upping the megs to compeat.

Thats not what I was talking about and is a different issue.

I was merely pointing out that surely their OWN bandwidth is cheaper than someone elses, and is presumably why they run their own newserver and Web Proxies - to keep as much bandwidth usage as possible internally.

The proxies are useless though :(

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

I did wonder if NTL had been hit by a "usenet death penalty", as the last thing I saw on one binaries group was my NFILTER rule picking off a lot of abuse with NTL server msgid's.

And there can be a fault in the feeds for one set of groups, rather than an outage of the whole news server.

The bandwidth issues are complex...

If you use an external server, the all traffic used is external - only the traffic actually used though, but for each person using it.

If you use the ISP server, then it's one lot of external traffic for all groups covered, used a lot or a little.

As for other servers though _ Im beginning to be tempted by the idea of a dollop of Astraweb.
http://news.astraweb.com/plans.html
Unless you seriously expect to do more than 25Gb per month, better to buy it in chunks (no speed limit, no connection limit. no expiry), than on the montly plan.

Clara's 10Gb/month at 30 quid for the year is not bad, but unless you get to use more than 50% of that, the 65Gb Astraweb, and a renewal if needed, works out cheaper.

From what I hear though, Astraweb are not quite division one, but a lot better than many. If you really want superservers, you have to pay super prices.

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

I signed upto Astraweb last week and its been a mixed bag so far. To maximise bandwidth useage you must use all 4 connections to Astraweb. If you have just one group updating then you'll only get around 50k/s most of the time so ive found out, with all 4 connections in use you get full speed 182k/s. now it maybe Astraweb or it maybe Grabit, because ive just switched over to Newsleecher and get twice the speed with just 1 connection open.

I have found it to slow down quite alot during the evening / night, but it's worth the £8 a month for the unlinmited plan, think i might jump to Clara or a decent euro server if anybody can reccomend one?

I think one reason could be that with p2p you get more choice over what you d/load. With newsgroups you are limited to what is on the server at any one time. It can also be difficult to get large files, as they have to be broken up into chunks & re-combined once d'loaded - just one part missing or corrupted can screw the whole file. All up I think it is probably seen as a bit geekier to use news groups, but they do have the advantage of anonmity.

:D there is certainly plenty of it - one word of caution is that the title of a file may not adequately describe the contents ;)

I feel I know you well enough to know that :)

It was intended as a 'heads up' for anyone else reading the post, sometimes, for some reason, people disguise illegal pictures by falsely describing them.

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

Fixed?

Dumped a few groups headers and did a compare between those groups on Astraweb v NTL and NTL has many missing/incomplete posts after the 19th!

I know of two meanings for the word 'fixed' too! One means to have repaired something so it works as it did before:

"The mechanic FIXED his car so it ran like new"

Or another meaning of 'fixed' implies damage/alteration of something so it doesn't work as it did before:

"The incompetent mechanic FIXED his car so it wouldn't work at all"

Wonder which version of 'fixed' NTL have applied here?

There is another note, where they say that all customers experience problems with e-mail and news groups and they are awar about it and are working on it.

I noted people saying about the size of headers eating into your downloads, heres a trick to save headers (and time) - look on www.newzbin.com for whats new on the binaries, then use a newsreader with a search to look for the files you want (even grabit has a search now), then you dont need headers, i believe www.newzbin.com also runs some kind of auto-header import type thing (i havent looked at this though). Using various ideas there is no reason to grab the headers anymore.

It looks like the fault has been "fixed" then immediatly included as part of another fault though. The binaries have allegedly been fixed twice now and now there is a "new" mention to a fault - Is this honest, or their way of not fixing it properly?

Re: binary newsgroups on NTL

i'l check when I get back but I guess what NTL mean is that you can access newsgroups so the problem is fixed.. not that they have restored the binaries and all missing posts from 19..

having said that i'm willing to give them a chance and see what i get.. remember there are multiple servers and they could be synching at the moment.. Try doing a reset on the group and seeing if you can import all the headers again

Just been looking at binary updates - take for example an mp3 album, it seems most smaller files make it (.nfo, covers, etc), but only 1 of the larger files (.mp3) make it, the rest of the album is missing,

Way ahead of you :), tried several servers, all with full updates, not just incremental updates - nothing new ATM. Personally Im not so bothered about getting the 19th-24th thats missing, just want it fixed so we get all files again.

Sounds like mail and homepages are probably moving there too, perhaps thats been the cause of the issues, maybe itll all settle down now (if we are lucky)

just spent £5.51 (10 bucks) to test out the astraweb usenet server to circumvent the current NTL issue. Seems a good idea to have 25gb download capacity on standby whilst NTL find the usenet Haynes manuals. !

The download from Astra is pretty good at the moment, getting a steady 750kbps. So right now I consider it a good mini-investment !!!!

Yeah Astraweb isn't too bad at all, ive been paying £8 / $15 per month for the unlimited DSL package, no cap and i get around 180k/s with 4 connections running.

The bonus is the a.b.dvd groups and a.b.x / ftn that NTL don't cater for.

Ive joined the Exodus - i joined astraweb this am, it seems to have a 10 day retention, better completion than NTL, and more groups than NTL, and has no cap, just leech all month! It was US$10 (£5.50) which is great value, I get about 100k a second on the nonDSL option, im happy with that. Beware the NTL March cap tho, ill only be able to leech 30gig per month, so dont go for a very expensive alternative, its not worth it.

my friend has been telling me about the BT broadband hes on, it sounds good, cheaper then NTL (its unlimited downloads, but u only get 1meg download speed, faster then atm, but slower than march, BUT who cares if NTL give u 1gig a second if its capped!). Time to consider the golden handshake with NTL methinks.

Has anyone a suggestion for UK broadband, with unlimited downloads, about 750k is enough too, im not a massive leecher, just mp3s realy and i have over 27,000 albums so no need to get most that are there i have them lol :)

Im hoping I wont need the 2nd month on astraweb, NTL news "problems" have been going on for over 1 week now, their cap is only 2 weeks away, I suspect the newsgroups will be magically "fixed" just before the cap starts, the current problems are purely for bandwith saving, come the cap, they wont be needed.

I WAS happy with NTLs binaries, I leeched daily, I didnt need more then 24h retention, they did have about 5 days though I think, they had pretty reasonable completion too! I think JTWNs question can only be answered by some top guy at NTL, personally I cant see them upping groups much or retention though.
