Call NTL and they'll send you one for £15, or for free if your old one's broken (and yes, they will check).

Given that NTL own the STB and we therefore just pay rental, why do they charge for remotes (especially when the ones originally given don't offer such basic functionality as volume control)?!!

You get one remote free of charge. If it breaks, you get a new one free, as I said above.

If you want a second one, for example to control the STB from a bedroom, or because you've lost the old one, etc, they'll charge you.

It doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me.

Agreed, pay if you want a second or a replacement for a lost one. But my existing remote doesn't let me alter the volume; its functionality is comprised. Why should I pay for that? It's not like they don't get enough revenue out of me already.

It is not that your remote is compromised, the new remotes have extra functionality that you do not need to have. There is nothing you can do with a new remote that you cannot do with an old remote and your TV remote.

As Bob says, you aren't actually missing out on any functionality with the new remotes, it's just that they're more convenient.

Also, regarding STB volume: at long, long last, Telewest finally included the ability to change the STB volume in their last code download. Since both NTL and Telewest use the same underlying code from Pace and Liberate in their software, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it in the next NTL version.

I guess this is a Bromley feature. In Cambridge (a Langley region) we have been able to change the STB volume since at least 2001!

I've had my current remote/STB for over 5 years - you'd think they'd have got the volume thing sorted by now. Take it us flat-capped folk up here in Bury, home of the Black Pudding, are in Bromley.

Yes-basic rule of thumb is that id you live in an area that used to be served by Cable & Wireless, then you are served from the 'Bromley' headend.

thats cause it is sorted for next software download ,so i have heard months ago

No, that would not be covered as broken given "fair" wear and tear. You will be charged for a replacement.

Even if it's 4 years old! The STB and it's remote have outlived the TV, DVD, Cooker, Fridge, Car and it's remote shows signs of 4 years hard use. This replacement policy is a little crazy IMHO.

OK, just got a new remote (with a new STB to replace a duff C&W one). Now, is it just me or does the mute button not work.

mute works on our remote.

The volume didn't but we had to enter a code for our tv and now it all works apart from a dogdy select button.

If you had a C&W box I assume you are in a Bromley area. The mute button has no function on the current Bromley software, I believe. Have you programmed the correct code into the remote for your TV?

I've got the remote for the samsung box and recently it lost it's code settings for the tv and the mute button worked. I'm on Bromley, as I'm ex-cwc. :confused:

The mute worked on my old C&W remote. The engineer set up the new STB/remote so dunno!

We've just had a Samsung box fitted recently to replace a PAce box (on Langley). The mute function doesn't work with the Samsung box, yet it did with the Pace one....pretty inconvenient when the phone rings, as we have the TV hooked up to the hi-fi so it means getting up to turn the hi-fi volume down.

As for remotes, we had one changed a few years ago because the labels started falling off the buttons, so you didn't know which button was which. They replaced it free of charge, I told them it seemed a bit of a daft design putting the label on the button rather than next to it like a lot of TV remotes etc.

so i should be able to get a free remote as mine is old and u cant see the labels also? and how come you replaced your pace stb? how much was it?
