[Merged] MS Anti-Spyware/Virus

Please note the Beta in the title ;)
You have to be running an admin account to install the software
MS Anti-Spyware Released
Quote:

Overview
Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over 50 ways spyware can enter your PC.

The worldwide SpyNetââ€Ãâ €¦Â¾Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢ community plays a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which are automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.

The user must be an administrator to install this application.

Note to Users of Giant AntiSpyware:
Current Giant AntiSpyware users with active subscriptions are advised to continue to use their existing software. Click here for more information.

If your subscription has expired, and you choose to download and install Windows AntiSpyware (Beta), you must first uninstall any previous versions of Giant AntiSpyware.

To remove Giant AntiSpyware:
1. Click Start and then choose Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs and then click Remove a Program. (If your control panel is set to Classic View, click the Add or Remove Programs icon.)
3. When the Add or Remove Programs window appears, select the Giant AntiSpyware program from the list.
4. Click Remove

. Beta Support Policy
* Important Information:
This is pre-release (beta) software distributed for feedback and testing purposes. Microsoft does not provide technical support for beta releases (see below for information about how to gain access to newsgroups). If Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is causing an issue with your system, we recommend removing it by using Add or Remove Programs and even using System Restore if the problem persists.

Additional Information:
Please see the Release Notes to learn more about known issues with Windows AntiSpyware (Beta).

No! I just tried the MS Beta product and Adaware SE in succession.

MS Product said nothing of interest.

Adaware said I had the 'Alexa' registry entries (gets installed with IE, according to Adaware) and a tracking cookie !!

May look OK, but if it don't pick up the scumware, what use is it? :(

The alexia that adaware finds isn't actual spyware, but rather has a potential to become spyware when infected by other stuff. MS may not consider tracking cookies spyware, and it is still in the beta stages ;)

You say that but it found my logitech desktop messenger, RealVNC and WinPCap as potential spyware. Now I would have thought alexia and tracking cookies are more of a threat than bloody VNC!

The Logitech Desktop Manager used to contain Backweb, probably still does

Quote:

BackWeb is a generic, background downloading tool that software vendors can incorporate into their product to download data (e.g. product updates) to the user's PC. Its operation depends on the instructions given to it by the individual software vendor who bundles it.

BackWeb has been associated with numerous large companies working on a corporate level to deliver timely information and updates. Essentially, BackWeb is a communications program whereby a large amount of users may be contacted in an instant.

Information may be collected from many sources including applications which may then be delivered to the collection site. Further, this technology is based upon an open architecture whereby third-party developers may develop customized applications to meet their needs.

BackWeb has plug-in module capabilities to further extend features and capabilities of the core program. One such established plug-in module is the "BackWeb Polite Upstream" which allows for the reverse flow of communications. Communications from the client may be delivered to the server for assimilation into a collection point for further processing.

May use port 6670 (as may Deep Throat 1,2 & 3.x, Foreplay, Reduced Foreplay, WinNuke eXtreame, and other programs.)
If it's sending data from your machine to a remote server, I'd say it's spyware.

WinPCap can also be exploited by other malware programs, they use it's libraries send out usage habit data to remote servers.

RealVNC - VNC is open source and can be installed within certain malware programs, see here for details:

http://research.sunbelt-software.com...m?name=RealVNC

Re: MS Anti-Spyware Beta

Think you're right Bifta, as far as I know Logitech are still using Backweb if you allow it to install the auto update feature. Hateful thing, I refuse to allow it to install. Recently installed the drivers for my webcam and it tried to install backweb when I forgot to untick the box, spybot went apesh*t LOL

AndrewJ 06-01-2005 14:09

Re: MS Anti-Spyware Beta

I have a logitech desktop system, and i know with the manager installed adware wasnt happy. but surely they sorted that by now??

Otherwise think your right Bifta. ( again ) ;)

Re: MS Anti-Spyware Beta

Logitech Desktop Manager hasn't been updated for a while (at least 4-5 months) and was still using backweb when I installed it last month. As far as a lot of sites are concerned backweb is spyware and therefor a lot of anti-spyware tools see it as such.

Yep, installed along side my mx 700, have since removed it, just installed and run the new M$ spyware ( oops, anti-spyware  :p: ) found 7 items, so at least it seems to be doing its job.
One thing I would like to see is a forward / back button on the interface, I made a mistake ( i know what your all saying, you did ???? ) anyhoo, it would be a nice feature. IMO

Re: M$oft Security Tools!!!

Why? The anti-spyware tool is just a rebadge of Giants anti-spyware software. All they have done to it at the moment is change the branding to MS  lets face it if MS cannot get it's coders to stop leaving bugs and exploits in it's operating systems and software then it needs to look for ways of protecting the users a it better.

Probally the new anti spyware probally detected it as spyware and removed it, because the maker used hacked software ( again ) somewhere in Microsoft.

I will await sp1 of these applications before I use them.

Like I said anyone would think the BBC got it wrong and only the anti-spyware was due to release today ;)
From the BBC
Quote:

Microsoft releases two free programs designed to help users keep PCs free of viruses and spyware.
Microsoft is releasing tools that clean up PCs harbouring viruses and spyware.
The virus-fighting program will be updated monthly and is a precursor to Microsoft releasing dedicated anti-virus software
Now although the BBC are saying that they have released 2 programmes MS have only released one tool today AFAIK

Re: [Merged] MS Anti-Spyware Beta

OK I've removed it. For some reason it keeps freezing applications that load IE up (such as a link in TeamSpeak) and can take forever for a website to load without my whole system freezing for a few seconds.

Removed it, and now everything seems fine. I'll be sticking with Spy Bot and AdAware until it's out of beta.

Re: [Merged] MS Anti-Spyware Beta

This product came from Giant - see quote from MS pages :

Quote:

Microsoft will continue to provide the same level of support to current subscribers of GIANT AntiSpyware software as was offered by GIANT Company Software prior to its acquisition by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft, however, will no longer sell new licenses, subscriptions, or subscription renewals for GIANT Company Software products, including GIANT AntiSpyware.
Cheaper to buy an existing product and amend it than write your own from scratch :erm:

Microsoft Anti-virus

Don't forget boy and girls, today is the day that Microsoft are supposedly launching their new anti-virus/ malware removal tool.
Yes in true NTL sytylee it's "Coming Soon" ;) Now it's anybodys guess if this will occur today as at the moment both locations for the tool have yet to show any sign of it but at least you will have a bit if warning on where to look ;)
From other sites out there on the web it seems that the tool will release through
Windows Update and
Microsofts' Malware site
as usual though it's the afternoon here in Blighty and no sign of the tool yet, no change there though ;) I'm expecting the tool to hit the servers sometime this evening and for the servers to become swamped very quickly :D
Have fun if you decide to try it out, probably won't miss much if you don't :p:

Re: [Merged] MS Anti-Spyware/Virus

I got no visual confirmation that it had run.....

I cannot find this program anywhere, on any menu or setting.....

I have no way of knowing what it is doing in the background.....

The program runs "silently" and is capable of sending reports back to Microsoft, apparently with no intervention being possible from me.....

Perhaps there was a typo, "Malicious Software Removal Tool" should have read "Malicious, Software Removal Tool". This new program has all the features, and exhibits a lot of the behaviours, of spyware..........

Nice one MS - where's that Add/Remove Programs button?

Paul K 11-01-2005 19:03

Re: [Merged] MS Anti-Spyware/Virus

I think it's stand alone tool that you have to invoke to run, try the online one or download the tool and try again. To run it again here I had to run the file that was downloaded.
edit: if you downloaded the file from the link in post 52 it is a stand alone tool and does not install to your operating system. If you read the EULA it states you must agree with the EULA to run the tool not install the software. I think the version that will come through windows update will most likely be an installed version of it.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx
as to sending information back to MS I would read the MS KB in post 54 where it states:
Quote:

Q20: Does this tool send back any information to Microsoft?
A20: Yes. If the tool finds an infection or an error, anonymous information is sent back to Microsoft. See the "Reporting component" section for more information.
†¢ Q21: Can I prevent this tool from sending information back to Microsoft?
A21: Yes. The reporting component can be disabled by setting a specific registry key. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
891716 Deployment of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool in an enterprise environment
and from the same MS KB article
Quote:

Q2: What installer does this tool use?
A2: The tool does not install or update files on a computer. Therefore the tool does not use an installer, such as Windows Installer or Update.exe. It is packaged within a self-extracting CAB executable to reduce the size of the package.
†¢Q3: How do I remove this tool?
A3: The tool does not have to be removed because the tool is never installed. No Programs folder entry or Add/Remove Programs entry is created when the tool is run. However, there may be a temporary folder left in the root of one of your disks. This folder will be removed on next restart.
which is why you cannot find it in the menu or add/ remove programmes ;)

As I understand it, the tool runs once a month (or whatever) as part of Windows Update, and its only function to the check for/clear the most prevalent pests (e.g. blaster).

Hmmm, ok. I used the Windows Update to install (or not) the program.

It obviously ran because it created a log file, but I got no sign of any activity as it did so.

Doesn't even show up on the Windows Update for 2000, I have to download it manually :erm:

I would quote the entire article but it's got a long list of error messages :erm:
KB 891717

You receive an error when you run the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
INTRODUCTION
After you run the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, you receive a message that states that errors were found during the scan, and you are directed to this article for more information.

Note Some of these errors are informational messages or minor issues and may not require additional action.

For general information regarding this tool, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

890830 The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps to remove specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003

To determine why you received an error message, follow these steps:
1. Locate and open the Malicious Software Removal Tool log file (Mrt.log). The log file is typically located in the %windir%\debug folder on your computer. %windir% refers to the location of your Windows folder. This log file is available only in English.
2. After you open the file, find the most recent entry in the log file. This entry is typically the last entry in the log file. You may have to scroll down to the end of the log file to find this entry.
3. Match the error in the log file with one of the errors that is listed in the table in the "More Information" section. Some of the error messages may include a Windows error code. For more information about these error codes, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Its Microsoft.

you expect it to work..even on final release it will break down in a week...give it 12month and be on service pack 5 or something for it. May just work a week.

Can't see any entry on any of the menus.

Thanx.

There is an online version available here. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=40458

It installs an Active X control to run. I found it very amusing that the Microsoft Anti Spyware program warned me that an 'unknown' Active X file was trying to run.:)
