Remote Control.

Can anyone recommend a good value all in one remote control for my pace NTL box as well as TV DVD Surround sound system. As the 6 I have is driving me mad. :disturbd:

Thanks

Re: Remote Control.

don't think these work with the Pace boxes as they use IrDR for the infra red signal from the remote control and all the other stuff you have will be RC5.. You might be able to get one of these to work with the red eye see http://www.redremote.co.uk/ for more info

skunk4u: Are you in Leicester? If so, you don't need a RedEye. That's only for the 'Bromley' areas (and even then, only the Pace 1000 and 2000 model boxes).

And, no, ntl don't make any money out of RedEyes. They are made by a completely independent company.

So theres nothing i can do about having 1 remote?

Re: Remote Control.

i think what spiderlpant is saying is that because you are ona different part of the NTL network to me you don't need the redeye. If that is the case then you should be able to use a 5 in 1 or a 6 in 1 remote ok. i think you should check before you pay any money on one of these that the remote actually does support your model of STB first.

Perhaps someone could put something in the "articles" area about which remotes work with which STB and what codes are required to set them up.

Re: Remote Control.

UK DCab remote control list

There are five different remote controls used for cable TV in this country, though two of them have been replaced. There are also two keyboards. The full list is:

1) Original NTL "shark" remote: blue, supplied in NTL Langley areas prior to 2003. Use RC5 (standard IR frequency codes). Looks like this.

2) CWC "stick" remote: Black, supplied in NTL Bromley and Telewest areas prior to 2003. Uses the "Two-Way TV protocol" (odd proprietary system based on IrDA). Looks like this.

3) Telewest silver remote: Light grey ;). Currently supplied in Telewest areas. Controls TV volume, but no other TV functions. Has fewer buttons than the old "stick" remote. Generally a bit rubbish. Uses the TWTV system. Looks like this.

4) New-style Blue NTL remote: Supplied in Langley areas, and Bromley with Samsung boxes. Redesigned version of the original "shark" remote. Controls most TV functions using a clever "shift" system. Well laid out, and much better than the Telewest version. Uses standard RC5 frequencies. Looks like this.

5) New-Style black NTL remote: Currently supplied in Bromley areas, except with Samsung boxes. Identical to (4) above, except for the colour. Uses the TWTV protocol. Looks like this.

6) Original NTL keyboard: Blue. Uses RC5 frequencies.

7) CWC keyboard: Black. Uses TWTV protocol.

STB Compatability list

Based on the numbering above, the following lists which remotes work with which boxes.

NTL Langley:

Pace 4001 (all varieties): 1, 4, 6
Pace 4010: 1, 4, 6 (TWTV previously supported, but removed in last update)
Samsung: 1, 4, 6

NTL Bromley:

Pace 1000/1000b: 2, 3*, 5, 7
Pace 2000: 2, 3*, 5, 7
Pace 4000: 1, 2, 3*, 4, 5, 6?, 7
Samsung: 1, 4, 6?

* - I don't know whether the "home" button on the Telewest remote has any function in the NTL software.
? - Can anyone tell me whether the blue keyboard works with 4000/Samsung boxes? They should, but I've never had it confirmed.

Telewest:

Pace 1000/1010: 2, 3, 5, 7
Pace 2000: 2, 3, 5, 7
Pace 4000: 2, 3, 5, 7, possibly 1 and 4, 6 unlikely
Scientific Atlanta: 2, 3, 5, 7

Some people on Telewest forums have reported success using RC5 devices with the 4000, but I don't know the official status of it.

With regard to One-4-All style devices, if the box you have supports remotes 1 and 4, then you're fine. Otherwise, you will need to use the Redeye system to translate remote codes into the TWTV protocol.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for that info Tristan. :tu:

Perhaps a passing mod could put it in the "articles" section.

Just to add to the above, I'm told there is a revised version of the new NTL remotes available, which include VOD controls and a couple of other minor improvements.

Re: Remote Control.

yup. the arrow buttons have VOD controls, Pause/Play, Rewind, FForward and stop.
the logo at the bottom is now ntl instead of ntl:home
and the light will flash orange if the batteries are low
and, the remote will never loose the tv code - unlike the previous new-style remotes
:)

On the arrow keys? That interesting. Telewest have them on the coloured buttons. Reckon the arrow keys make more sense.

We used to have a problem with the remote forgetting the TV code, until we changed to cheap NTL-supplied batteries for Duracells. That seemed to sort it out. Luckily it seems even this isn't necessary on the new ones.

Re: Remote Control.

Yep, we got one of the revised blue remotes with our Samsung box last week.

Up = Play/Pause
Left= Rewind
Right = Fast-forward
Down = Stop

Hasn't lost settings so far in a week, which is generally better than the 'last generation' one we had before.

bigitup - Is it proven that it will never lose settings, or is that just what we're all hoping?

Browneggsandham :)

Bob 05-01-2005 19:35

Re: Remote Control.

The remotes now included an EEprom so they will never forget a programmed TV code - and I believe that a good thing ;)

Re: Remote Control.

Cool, didn't know that. Would that be why they seem ever so slightly heavier then?

Thanks,
Browneggsandham :)

Must be honest, I hadn't noticed. Not so keen on the finish now... the shiny covering was much nicer :)

Nice to hear that there's a new updated bromley shark, unfortunately, we're lumbered with the version 1 of Bromley's shark which when the batteries run flat gives us about thirty seconds to change the batteries before we have to reinstall the code for our tv - haven't had to test this out yet though.:D

On the VOD front I do hope that ntl will issue a info sheet on how to use the service with bills nearer updates to each area. Shouldn't be too difficult, given that using info from here managed to knock up a couple of info sheets for home using Powerpoint in just over an hour...

However, didn't know that a Telewest remote could be used with an ntl: box - though with the merger this year, this probably will become common?

It can only be used on Bromley boxes (apart from the Samsung), and even then, not properly, as the "home" button doesn't work.

After the merger, they'll give out NTL remotes to everyone, as it's approximately 10,000 times better than the crappy Telewest one.

Remember, Argos do a 30 day money back gaurantee.

Buy one, see if it works, if it doesn't you can just take it back - No Problems :D
