Slight problem

Can anyone tell me, why, for no apparent reason some pictures have become blank squares with little red crosses on my web pages. Not many, just a tiny handful but it's annoying.
I use a proxy server but changing it to another or removing it entirely makes no difference. Neither has rebooting. I havent changed anything on my pc or downloaded anything, its literally happened overnight for no apparent reason.
Any ideas?

Re: Slight problem

Alan, are you referring to images on a webspace server, such as your ntl webspace?

paulyoung666 03-01-2005 11:22

Re: Slight problem

have you got an example to try :)

AlanYork 03-01-2005 11:44

Re: Slight problem

It's webpages. For example, I often look at a webpage called www.pandorasbox.com . Its a site devoted to a silent screen star called Louise Brooks. If I go to the message board forum all the avatars show up ok, apart from one, by a poster called Jolene an aquiantance of mine. Hers shows up as a blank box with a red cross in it.

Theres one or two other examples but thats the sort of thing I'm talking about.

By the way is it a good or a bad thing to use a proxy server?

Re: Slight problem

Funny that.
I have had a lot of this on a few different sites.
Sometimes the pix show, sometimes not, i tried clearing the cache and all the usual things, but its hit and miss at some places.

have you tried ctrl f5 when you are viewing a site with problems
:)

edit :- just checked out what you are on about and i get the same , the file is missing from the site :(

Paul 03-01-2005 11:52

Re: Slight problem

Jolene's avatar is not available, that's why it shows up as a red X.

Re: Slight problem

Yes but a friend of mine in Scotland can see it, thats how it came up in passing conversation. Dont get me wrong here, obviously not being able to see an avatar is totally unimportant but is it a symptom of some sort of larger problem? What concerns me is that this has occured overnight for no apparent reason. Why does simply removing the proxy server or changing it not cure it?

Your friend can see it because its probably cached on his machine, and has not updated yet, I bet if he hit CTRL+F5, then the image would faulter.

Your friend may be looking at a cached copy. Do they still see it if they clear their cache and use ctr F5 whilst viewing the page?

Edit. Great minds think alike. :)

Re: Slight problem

Hmmm I didnt think to ask him that. has anybody else taken a look at www.pandorsbox.com forum and seen a red cross where Jolenes avatar should be?

If you see it too I have nothing to worry about I guess, but the last time this happened it was quickly followed by no sites opening properly at all and a wasted day talking to an NTL Indian call centre trying to sort it out, hence the proxy server. At least I think it was Indian.

Like I said, it isnt the avatar I'm worried about, it's the possibility of there being a bigger problem.

I can see all but the avater. When i try to look at the source for the avater its not there. I think the source is having problems. :)

And i can see all the other avaters on that forum

Which means its just that one so i do think there is a poblem with where that avater is feeding from.

AlanYork 03-01-2005 12:43

Re: Slight problem

So you see a red cross as well then? Hmmm.

Re: Slight problem

Well thats kind of a relief cos last time this happened it was a pig of a job to sort out. I sometimes find these forums so much more useful for the novice like myself than NTL tech support. Thanks

Re: Slight problem

I had this issue with Spot ON Computers website, I uninstalled Nortons internet security, and it worked fine from then on.

Toto 03-01-2005 13:41

Re: Slight problem

Alan, in summary the source of the avatar is missing, and those who can see it are only able to because they have a locally stored copy, which will be ubtaded at some point when they refresh their local cache of the page. :)

As the OP explained why he/she was worried. :dozey:

*wonders if people are posting useless posts again to up their count

there was more to my post dellwear, if you would like to read it again, this makes me think you are posting to up your count, what ever that means.

I am not interested in how many posts I do, that is just childish.

ik
p.s. you are taking this off topic

You just reiterated what had already been said, thats why I asked you if you'd read the thread. :dozey:

Doesn't matter anyway, I just thought it'd be interesting to find out why you felt like posting unnecessary and repetitive information.

Paul K 03-01-2005 19:06

Re: Slight problem

Can we chalk this up to skim reading a thread and over zealous posting while trying to help??
It can be easy to miss posts which may hold important information and to be honest there aren't many people on this forum (myself included) who have yet to post repeated or mistaken information/ advice.
Arguing the toss on a thread and in doing so taking a thread a long way off topic is not needed :(
Ik posts a suggestion that had already been made at least once in the thread and questions why the OP asked the question in the first place,
Dell points out the repeated information and questions Ik as to if he has read the entire thread,
Ik seems to take offense to this and answers in a slightly terse and off hand way,
Dell posts querying Ik's latest post,
Ik seems to take offense again and replies,
Dell posts...
Ik posts...
Everyone else wonders when the thread will get back on topic and Ik and Dell agree to disagree

Re: Slight problem

No dellwear, read it. I said MY post, I think you have a problem today.

pandorsbox.com, not the same animal.

That was a pointless reply to a 3 month old thread  Pandora'sbox.com will of course not work, but that's not the issue here.

Not a 3 month old thread. A 15 month old thread..

Zeph, sorry that trying to help was so pointless, wish I hadn't bothered.

I should not have put the apostrophe in Pandorasbox.com

By the way it seems that after three months you are still talking about it and
you still do not understand that it is Pandorsbox.com that won't work.

15 months - not 3 ;)

Kinda gives the impression things have sorted themselves out eh? ;)

15 months of browsing without seeing any graphics... I'd hope it's been sorted by now :Yikes:

Mate, not sure you realise that the thread you replied in dates back to January 2005... that's why we're not really taking things seriously. :)

Re: Slight problem

True, I did not realize that it was an old thread.
Thank you for a courteous r reply.

Old thread or not the simple point is that Pandorsbox.com and Pandorasbox.com are not the same internest site.
