Ntl e-mail gone crazy!!!

Anyone else getting unusually large amounts of spam today?? On average I get 20-50 "junk" mails a day, but today, so far had 475!!!! 469 of them being spam..............luckily I use Spampal & its set to delete them off the server, so its not a problem, but never had such a lot in one day before.

Are they bounces? - you may be the "lucky" one on the spammers list that gets picked as today's forged "source" of the junkmail.

I've had a lot more than usual, but nothing like the quantities you're talking about....where I might get about 10 spams a day I'm getting about 30-40 a day over the last few days.

I'm getting heaps .... This shows NTL in a bad light - a poor ISP ! Come on if Microsoft can get it's act together then why can't NTL?
Perhaps I should use my hotmail more?

no one is forcing you to use ntl ;) , how about doing something about it yourself instead of bitching about ntl :disturbd:

Microsoft get it's act together . It will be a cold day in hell when that happens.

Emails today

None spam 45
spam 5

Those where on my ntl account. Now i am not saying user's don't get spam. But over the last 2 months my spam has reduced considerably.:tu:

However i allways get spam from microsoft on my hotmail account. Even when i asked them to stop it :td: .

Lets just see that attitude in other scenarios....

MASIVE queues at the dentist - No one is forcing you to get toothache.
CRAP finances for NHS hospitals - No one is forcing you to get ill.
AWFULL public transport - No one is forcing you to get on the train / bus.

What I'm trying to get at here is, you are indeed correct, no-one is forcing anyone in these scenarios. However, you are missing one important factor.
WE ARE PAYING FOR THESE SERVICES.

If ntl SELL me e-mail as part of their service, in the same way other ISP's do, I would expect it to work within acceptable paramiters.
Personaly, I'd find THOUSANDS of junk e-mails a day totaly unacceptable and fully expect ntl to do something about it.
Not because it's my individual account, but because this mail has to go through the ntl system and adds bandwidth to an already heavily loaded system.

It would be more beneficial to ntl than the individual customer if this problem was resolved.

Are you saying you get THOUSANDS EVERY DAY ON YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT :Yikes:

I am sure you will find that NTL are doing something about it. I certainly have seen a very big reduction in spam over the last 2 months. I am sure they have started to introduce spam filtering.

Quite a few attempts at analagies that are nothing like what we are talking about and flawed to boot. If we were to compare email with snail mail there is one important point that emerges. The Post Office have to deliver to you all mail that is addressed to you and properly franked. NTL are not sending you the junk mail, they are just delivering it. There are plenty of people who do not want someone else to decide what email they get and what is not passed on to them because they think it is spam. I get several emails which I do want to receive marked as spam by Mailwasher and would be upset if I was not given the chance of receiving them.

Following masses of spam mails and the unexplained removal of our e-mail addresses twice by NTL and then several long downtime periods for NTL servers, we decided to reactivate a dormant hotmail account and so far the service from Microsoft has been superior to that of NTL. NTL e-mail services are poor, make the change you will not regret it and in anycase hotmail can fetch your NTL pop mail if you so wish.

I've had no reduction in the amount of spam I receive to my purposely set up spam email. As for the other non spam one well I got very little spam on that already and none for some time.

Frankly I find it hard to judge if they are actually doing anything.

I've got nine @ntlworld accounts. One of them gets about 25 spam emails a day, just made another account with - on the end of the original name; it gets no spam :D

Don't know why but one week i got about 10 random spam mails to one account..it just stopped soon after. Other then that i'm spam-free :)

I on the other hand gave up on my Hotmail and msn accounts due to the spam. Even on its highest setting i get spam from Microsoft and its approved affiliates which i cannot stop and at times could be 10-20 spams a day:Yikes: . I emailed hotmail support who said that they cannot turn these emails off as they are part of the service and are a required part:grind: . Therefor i had 2 options

Except the spams from Microsoft and its partners
Dump my hotmail

Answers on a postcard :)

Having used hotmail for some time, no spam, you can choose if you pay for the service. No spam at all. Reliable solid service.

Re: Ntl e-mail gone crazy!!!

I think we've been here before, many....many times. Yes, ntl gets spam, so do other ISP's, and no one email service can truly say it is spam free. I have hotmail and yahoo accounts, and they both get spammed too.

One of my ntl email addresses gets hit quite bad, but it has improved since ntl introduced the first phase of anti spam blocking. I'm sure when phase two is introduced, which I believe is controllable (sp?) through the webmail interface, we should all see further reductions.

However, I will say this, get hold of Thunderbirsd, it is a fantastic email program, and deals with spam a lot better than any Microsoft Email product in my experience.

Re: Ntl e-mail gone crazy!!!

I get less than 5 spam emails in a week on 3 ntl email accounts. (The vast majority on an account that I keep private for some reason.)

If I did get spam I wouldn't just blame ntl though. They should do something of course, all ISPs should take a certain level of responsibility.

There is only so much any ISP can do though, especially when some people are not careful about who knows their address (present company excepted of course).

Well, 1000 to 2000 spam mails a month was enough for us but what really upset us was that twice this year NTL mail servers were down for up to 10 days and then the loss of our normal mail addresses without even an explanation to customers, this kind of situation is appalling and should not be tolerated by any decent ISP. Reluctantly, we had to find a reliable alternative this we have done and as a result are now very happy.

Ntl's spam problem its not an issue of keeping your account secret. The spammers can use brute force attacks on Ntls email servers to get spam through because there are so many customers with the @ntlworld.com addresses. This works because if they try a million different permutations of FIRSTNAME.SURNAME@NTLWORLD.COM then they will get some through.

The only advice is to change your email address to something less common, or change your email provider. I've always used Yahoo.co.uk for my mail and they do me proud, I hardly get any spam into Outlook, maybe 1 or 2 a week. :erm: :)
